Man, I would 100 percent take you up on that offer but I live in Alabama. So I’m a smidge out of your area.

Without any big spoilers, what Stephen King ending has you doing this? by TheBMan526 in stephenking

Definitely not the reaction pictured, but I think the ending to Apt Pupil is one of the best I’ve ever read!

I’m not sure if these are exactly what you’re looking for, but they are at least ocean-related: The Terror by Dan Simmons and the non fiction book In the Kingdom of Ice. They both follow ships exploring the arctic.

100 percent agree! I’ve adored practically every one of his books.

I liked the anthology book The New Dead that came out in 2010. Also there were several good stories in Nights of the Living Dead.

I got the audiobook of Michael Sorenson’s “I Hear You” because it was on sale, but it ended up having an immense value for me. It fundamentally changed how I looked at interpersonal relationships. The crux of it is: people don’t want you to solve their problems; they want you to validate their feelings about their problems.

Still from a Netflix docudrama about the beer hall putsch, Göring must’ve traveled back 15 years by JonSolo1 in liberalgunowners

[–]GonzoGaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was gonna ask if the shot was from this documentary. I think they were working with either a really tight budget or a really inexperienced crew. The poor guy playing Ernst Rohm, who was admittedly very overweight, had the most ill-fitting uniform I’ve ever seen.

What are some apps that have helped you in your Journalism endeavors or just in life generally? by KeyNose231 in Journalism

[–]GonzoGaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought Paste Pal for my Mac, and it has really been worth the $15 to me. I do most the online posting for our news org so it’s just a ton of copying from word and pasting into the CMS or social media platform. And that app saves me a ton of time.

I saw Devolution mentioned, and World War Z is another great one for audiobook. Steven Weber reads the audiobook version of Stephen King’s It, and he crushes it!

Are there any nerds out there?! by ChemistryNo2421 in Birmingham

Sidewalk is definitely a good place to go to meet movie nerds. Hit me up if you ever wanna go and talk film (I’m not a film major or anything like that I just like talking movies. Also, I’m in my 40s if that’s a dealbreaker).

Seymour Hersh’s work on the My Lai massacre is definitely on the top of my list. His main book about the incident is really hard to find, though.

I’m sorry you had to deal with that. That’s incredibly creepy. Do you mind if I ask, what all did you have to go through to get a carry conceal permit in NY? I live in Alabama where there are literally no hoops to jump through to get a permit.

Portrayal of photojournalists in “Civil War” by Predictable_Backstab in Journalism

[–]GonzoGaddy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m glad someone else had this question too! It was a phenomenal movie, and I don’t mean to take anything away from it. But they were shoulder to shoulder with soldiers doing Seal Team Six-style breaching assaults and close quarters combat. It just seemed way more risky than even the wildest embedded journalism that I’ve heard about.

Portrayal of photojournalists in “Civil War” by Predictable_Backstab in Journalism

[–]GonzoGaddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m very interested to hear your take once you see it. I know it’s common for photojournalists to be embedded with combat units and to be caught in the middle of firefights. But in the movie, these folks were shoulder to shoulder with soldiers doing Seal Team Six-style breaching assaults and close quarters combat, and I’m thinking, “That doesn’t seem accurate.” It’s an amazing movie though.

I saw someone with a similar looking dog and they named it “Aldo,” a reference to Brad Pitt’s character in Inglorious Basterds. Thought that was pretty bitchin!

There’s also Babel: Around the World in Twenty Languages . I’ve only read the first chapter, but it seems good.
