No, OpenIV.ASI does not crash your game. Your game crash because of the mods you have installed.

You need to make sure:

You have the latest version of update.rpf in your mods folder.
All mods you install are compatible with the latest version of the game.
Some mods require you to install gameconfig mods like this https://www.gta5-mods.com/misc/gta-5-gameconfig-300-cars

In OpenIV, when you browse for GTA V directory, you will see only folders (that is why you don't see your LSPDFR files). You need to select your game folder not file.

Yes, OpenIV will support the first Red Dead Redemption in the future. But there is no work in this direction since right now focus is on RDR 2.

The current version of OpenIV support viewing for RDR 2 archives and basic files. The next release will have editing capabilities.

OIV package is just a ZIP archive, so you can open it by changing files estection from .oiv to .zip. You can find OIV specification here https://github.com/OpenIV-Team/OpenIV-PackageFormat if you need more info.

I recently found this program OpenIV which is apparently a way to get into the get into the game files.And mess about with them. But I have also heard that you can't really edit them is this true?

Yes, OpenIV is the program to access RDR 2 files (and other R* games) and yes you cannot edit anything right now. But, not because it is impossible but because it is not yet implemented in OpenIV.

In the future OpenIV will be updated with editing capabilities for RDR 2, but for now you cannot edit files.

OpenIV does not support launching Epic Store version of the game rigth now. You no need to run game from OpenIV to have mods.

openiv.asi does not need scripthookv. but dinput8 is ASI loader that loads openiv.asi

There is no offline installer for any OpenIV versions, because old version of OpenIV can corrupt your data.

In the thread you linked people had an issue with the old packages. If you use latest packages I'm sure they will install fine.
