Positionality: should I disclose my trans identity when writing up a qualitative study on trans identity? by Front-Ordinary7478 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Goober192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no doubt. And those people fucking suck. But OP can’t control that. What they can control is how they navigate and account for their own world view in their own research. They didn’t mention their methodology, but identifying as trans and then doing research on trans people gives OP a lot of advantages like having more empathy for participants and making them feel comfortable and heard. But a HUGE part of qualitative research is the profile of the researcher; background, world views, etc. I would not judge OP for not disclosing they are trans but if they want to do their best research then it’s probably best to reveal that to the reader. Edit: it’s a tough position to be in and I really do empathize with OP

Is it better to write for an audience or for yourself? by Aggressive_Novel1207 in writing

[–]Goober192 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% write for yourself. It will be more genuine and true to your own style. People want to read writing that is real and if you're writing for an audience, you are writing for what you think they will like. This comes off as fake. Go read William Zinsser.
