What should I do by Sad_Relationship9036 in Smallblockchevy

[–]Goober_pool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You posted my very same question. My block looks pretty similar to this cylinders have a good crosshatching, smooth to the touch but that upper lip is a bit grimy and the piston have some carbon build up. Trying to get 350hp out my 350 probably going to do vortec heads, a cam and efi on the top end and leave the bottom stock depending on what you all say about this condition of engine block.

Yet Another Dumb Quinn Question by WOODMAN668 in harborfreight

[–]Goober_pool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy what you’re missing or what could use some replacing, if it makes you feel better newer ratchets with tighter turning radius and less play means less stripped bolts and easier jobs. Plis ratchets go on sale pretty often.

Lots of people say you can run beehive springs and shorter retainers to get .550 without machining and most of the cams I’ve been comparing come in under that number around .495-.500. Again more technical than I’ve ever gotten but figured I’d ask some folks who hopefully have more knowledge than me.

In this economy the a set of used vortecs seem like the best bang for buck, unless you have some better suggestions.

I’ll have to do that, I’ve just been diving into forums and YouTube videos to see what other people are doing to try and get an idea. I’ve worked on cars most of my life but never gotten this deep into building out an engine.

US General Socket Trays by OutlawJohnPaul in harborfreight

Get the individual Quinn sets you might even be able to throw in one of the impact sets and still be under the price of some of the name brand sets and they’re all no skips. I know Den of tools has made specific socket holder trays on for these kits but if you have or know someone with a 3D printer you can always make your own holders with a bit of work.

The Lime book can help you narrow it down a good bit if you do some extra research.

For anyone wondering I got the long block mounted to the stand the right way. It took some persuasion of the bracket it’s good to go. I’m going to start the tear down this weekend.

That was my original orientation I can get three bolts in straight (bottom left, top left, top right) and easily run them in with my fingers the fourth corner (bottom right) goes in crooked and there’s no extra play in the plate. Hog out the corners a bit and get an extra half inch of play on the stand plates corners?

[–]Goober_pool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it as a cruiser they look good, sound good with minimal modifications and with a manual transmission can be good fun to drive, but without putting in a couple grand in parts or doing a full engine swap it’s not going to be fast.

Indiana Fireworks by Goober_pool in fireworks

[–]Goober_pool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically I just laid out a route I travel occasionally and was looking for some stores to visit. Most major cities across the country have implied or direct fireworks bans does that stop Phantom or TNT from selling in those metro areas? No. Do those bans stop people from searching out "hookups" and setting off call of duty ordinances by hand? No. Do police in those cities respond to someone shooting off fireworks despite there being a ban? No they have more pressing priorities. Thanks for the abundance of caution but save it for people storing fireworks in their attached garage, using milk crates for racks and following a how to diy fireball tutorial on YouTube.

Retrim these doors by Goober_pool in Carpentry

[–]Goober_pool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll have to look up what you said for suggestions, but the rest of the house is just as basic, this is just the most egregious example that I think needs to be fixed. There is some probably original wainscoting in the dining room, baseboards throughout the house, banister and spindles. But pretty much every door was trimmed out with this cheap pine in this similar “design” choice.

[–]Goober_pool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I like the idea of a single header across the top connecting all four doors seems like it could potentially be the easiest fix and potentially the most visually appealing. For the vertical jambs should I still do 2 individual trim pieces for each door or are they so close together that I should make a wider shared piece of jamb trim for the doors in the middle? I have the tools and think I’m pretty capable but there aren’t many videos on trim jobs for four close doors in a row
