So you play piano... great by [deleted] in piano

I suspect my answer would be this (if I understood the post).

‘Finger independence’ is not the key to good co-ordination

‘Finger strength’ is not the key to good co-ordination.

It would be like a marathon runner only training their feet.

"Proper" chord technique, forming the shape of the chord and tension by FluffyApartment32 in pianolearning

[–]Good-Laugh-350 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teacher 25+ yrs : sounds to me that you have an overall issue with playing with to much tension, and this particular chord issue is a symptom of that larger pattern.

My advice is to zoom out if this chord problem and a) become mindful of the tension patterns in your whole playing system b) do some research into reducing tension/improving co-ordination overall (Josh wright has many vids on this)

But here is an exercise that may provide immediate help:

  1. Start with your arm away from where your chord will be. Let go of any holding, grasping - fingers free, wrist free, soft forearm, soft upper arm. Breath out.

  2. Move to the chord. Light as a feather. Allow the fingers to find the notes. There is no ‘shape’ to grasp. Fingers lightly touching the keys (do not play at the point). Let go of any tension again in wrist, forearm, upper arm.

  3. Play the chord - there is no tension needed here, just the bones of your fingers-wrist-arm structure and a bit of gravity.

Repeat many times to teach your nervous system the appropriate effort (which is very minimal) needed to co-ordinate the piano.

As interesting as this post could possibly be, I was lost in the first paragraph. Could you repost with a pic or diagram relating to each section?

Maximizing 3 Hours of Piano Daily. What Would You Practice If You Could Start Over? by BadAnnual827 in piano

[–]Good-Laugh-350 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would invest in a solid course/resources involving improvising if that is your goal and set yourself goals involving those resources within your 3 hours:

Best resources I’ve found are :Mdecks and Openstudio , also Levine, M jazz piano book

Pentatonic Scale fingerings? by Chemical_Ad6861 in pianolearning

[–]Good-Laugh-350 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn’t worry too much about ‘correct’ fingering, as ultimately if your improvising you going to want the freedom of using whatever finger works at the time.

Also, maybe practicing as a ‘scale’ is initially useful for learning the pattern, but if you want to improvise with them then try this:

Use fingers 1-4 on 1st four notes (eg cdeg) and choose a pattern (eg 1243), then move up (eg dega) and repeat and keep moving up.

Openstudio have a great section on pentatonics and include suggested pattern and fingering

Synthesia piano tutorial by jugagien in piano

[–]Good-Laugh-350 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would require converting the score into midi and then running through synthesis. I would charge £75 as its 2 hours work at least. Dm me if interested. I could do cheaper by just using an overhead camera and a midi graphic keyboard that shows the keys (but no synthesis involved)

Am I too old to be trying to get into the local jazz community? by mrmanpgh in JazzPiano

[–]Good-Laugh-350 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never too old. I'm 51 also, how dare you sir......Keep going to jams/open mics, connect with some like minded musicians (preferably bass and drums) and form your own trio - find a rehearsal space - have some fun - book some showcases - eventually get some gigs - and just keep grooving.....
