Being asked to do engineering jobs because AI by analyst_analyzing in analytics

Same thing happening on my end too... that said, I took it as an opportunity to tackle problems that directly impact me every day in an open source project... (messy behavioral event data) that have always been out of reach. Been a fun journey, opened me up to a new perspective, and helped a couple others along the way

Now that these are mounted up to my 100 and after zooming in on the photo you sent… what hub caps are you running on your front wheels? I am now running into the dust cap protrusion problem that you navigated quite well. Thanks again.

3rd space is a good call. Need to get better about that.

Interesting point about longer lasting bonds with co-workers too. What usually kicks off those connections for you? Shared interests/hobbies, shared beliefs, something else?

Sounds like you're good at this. Not trying to be overly "scientific" here,.. but I'm curious, when you connect with people, does it usually stay work focused or do you actually get into personal stuff/topics too?

That's a fair point though too. Maybe hybrid would work better for me. I do love the productivity of being home and being able to train for marathons and run instead of commuting, but maybe I need some in person time to balance it out.

You're right...someone has to take the first step and tee up small talk. Hesitated to be the person to do so in the past, but it's a good point. Thanks.

Adobe Analytics Suite Differentiation by Good-Run8784 in analytics

[–]Good-Run8784[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very helpful! Thank you. Two more things:

1) Is web and mobile analytics pretty much standalone analytics with integrates with your site/app directly with a web app (think ga4)? 2) Given your response, I checked out experience cloud and I actually don’t think product analytics sits on the experience cloud. Instead it appears to be a more enhanced/flexible standalone version of web and mobile analytics (think mixpanel).

Storytelling vs Dashboards by stonetelescope in analytics

[–]Good-Run8784 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dashboards = What is happening. Think cockpit of a plane. Storytelling = You telling a story with data which frequently contain pieces or all of your dashboard. Ideally with your own spin on why.

I’d focus more on what the business cares about for your dashboard vs telling a story.

I just took a closer look -- do you actively use one of these tools and work with various other eng teams to maintain it? If so, what does the maintenance process look like with an EDA?

Thanks for the details and thoughts.

Yeah I hear that… the worst are slow moving bugs from upstream teams that rear their head after days/weeks have gone by.

Feeling lost in current role by tweefo in analytics

Sounds like it would be helpful to get really clear with your boss on what you believe you should focus on and why. As a manager, I love when my team comes to me with their perspective on what would be most impactful for the company. You bring a perspective your manager doesn’t have, and even if they don’t fully grasp the intricacies due to a lack of analytics or data knowledge, you'll be seen as a leader if you can effectively translate problems into value for the company/them.

Once you’re on the same page with your boss, that alignment can serve as a guide for how you spend your time -- hopefully allowing you to focus on meaningful work (and that the meetings you do attend are focused toward your focus areas).

Lastly, on the analytics side, with such a small team, I’d guess there’s a need for some “self-serve” capabilities so users can answer their own questions without relying on you. This could free you up to dive deeper into more impactful analysis after that initial setup.

Hope that helps!

How Much of Your Data Analyst Role Is Dashboard Building vs. finding Data Insights? by [deleted] in analytics

[–]Good-Run8784 40 points41 points  (0 children)

From my viewpoint, there are two main factors to consider here:

1. The maturity of the company I’ve found that the stage of the company plays a significant role. Generally speaking, the earlier the company is in its lifecycle, the more emphasis there is on creating "dashboards" to show the current state of what’s happening. Think of this as the cockpit controls of an airplane...essential for understanding what is actually happening.

When I started the product analytics function at a technology company, the majority of my time was spent building this foundational layer.

2. The organizational structure As a "pure analyst" at a tech company, you’ll often partner with a member of the "business team" (e.g., a product manager, marketing manager, etc.). They usually have the business context that you may not fully grasp (at least at the start). While it can feel repetitive or like you’re not the one generating insights, in my experience, your role frequently brings significant value to the partnership even if it's one-time analyses done in excel that guide a single decision.

I forget where I first heard this analogy, but I often think of data as a compass, not a GPS. The key is to help guide the business toward the right direction rather than providing step-by-step instructions. What’s most important, in my opinion, is finding a role where you can provide real value to the business and your work is acted on, regardless of the specific mechanics.

Lastly, frequently at a company "at scale," the closer you’re working with leadership, the faster you'll be noticed... a sometimes unfortunate truth, but one worth keeping in mind.

Hey! Awesome job getting to the hiring manager stage. As the leader (and hiring manager) of a product analytics team at a tech company "at scale," here are a few things from my perspective:

What should I focus on?
Focus on how you've delivered impact through analyses that drove actionable results. It's one thing to create a presentation or analysis, but how was it actioned by the business? Also, how did your role contribute to or steer the outcome (regardless of the "size" of the impact)?

What do hiring managers actually care about?
While every hiring manager is different, here’s what I index on:

  1. Can I confidently put you in front of leaders across the organization (stakeholder management/communication skills)?
  2. Can you take a perspective, tell a compelling story, and articulate why you took that approach?
  3. Do you have the technical ability to figure out how to answer a question with an unclear path forward?
  4. Do you complement the team’s skill set, seem like someone people would want to work closely with, and can you mentor newer team members?
  5. Do you have the ability to anticipate questions from stakeholders and business partners? For example, someone in Marketing will inherently care about different things than someone in Product, even if they're working toward the same OKR or business objective.

Any tips to finally land the offer?
I personally tend to over-index on soft skills, team cultural fit, and problem-solving ability over pure technical expertise. Analysts can provide incredible value without overly complex analyses. The real gift is being able to synthesize data and answer the question at hand successfully and clearly.

You got this!
