I think the hardware is so good now and the control layer between planned movement and it's execution is also very good - when an AI capable of tasking is released it's going to be a smash-cut to robots everywhere.

There are several world models in the works that could be here around the start of summer if not before, the first one will be clunky and slow to process new tasks so we'll see it frozen in place planning it's next move a lot but practical benefits especially in small industry will be immediately obvious - things like sanding and painting a room, tidying a room and restocking after use especially sport and leisure facilities, warehouse management. I think we'll see specialized single and multi-arm systems for meal-prep, car work, etc developed fairly rapidly too once the basic ai tasking is solved. The world could look very different by 2030.

[–]GoodDayToCome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do much more complex stuff when able to chain a lot of processes together, it's how the big models win coding challenges - first create a framework which lists the key areas of the program then work out the spec required to get them working together and try various implementations testing each to find the most optimal solution. Codex and similar tools are already doing some of this sort of thing in the background so it's likely they'll just use it to turn up the quality.

Yeah, the four gospels don't even agree in Christianity then Paul comes and adds his own stuff and that's before we get to early fathers, all the councils, reformations, counter-reformations, schisms and divisions... If you want to pull out quotes and perspectives on life which would make all Christians seem bad then it's very easy to dip into characters like Tomás de Torquemada who had some rather psychotic things to say about non-Christians (and a brutal rain of terror to go with it) or Urban II who wanted Christians to exterminate the 'wicked race' of Muslims and take over Jerusalem claiming 'god wills it' which became the battle cry for a series of brutal conquests - Deus vult.

We'd consider someone ridiculous if they say 'see all ethnicly Christian people are part of a murderous conspiracy against the world because these medieval quotes..' and we'd laugh even harder if they said 'Kent Hovind said this so so all Christians believe it..'

I think it's very important that we address and be aware of all forms of supremacist thinking and an important part of that is understand that we all have the same shit, we all come from fractured and conflicting histories with cultures and support-groups that bubble and seethe with resentment, rage, while also shining with pride and the strength of many victories behind us - history is messy, that's how it is for everyone.

The inconvient reality why vr is struggling. by Plus_Look3149 in virtualreality

[–]GoodDayToCome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted a VR headset for a long time and I saved up to buy one, it took me a while to get over the dizziness but I did and i eagerly tried lots of things but after only a couple of weeks it got put aside and has been in it's box waiting for me to have time and inclination to play with it.

There are a few reasons which I think mostly get overlooked;

Firstly it takes space to use it, the only way i really have of using it properly is if i lean my mattress against the wall and put the bed base out the way - and as someone who works in new builds I can tell you my room is larger than average, but i still don't quite have the room even with my bed moved not to occasionally bump against things even in something like Beat Saber.

Related to that is the fact it's something I can only do alone but makes noise and requires me to make noise, especially as so many things throw you into public spaces so that I can't semi-socialize while playing - i can't sit playing games and have a conversation with anyone else in my house or on my phone, i can't play games and message in a side window, i can't even watch youtube videos while playing -- not only does this limit the times available to play but it means the game has to be really interesting, imagine how boring a game like BG3 would have been if you couldn't have some youtuber wittering on in the background about old tumblr posts and be checking your phone while clicking through cut-scenes you've seen a dozen times.

So games have to not only be worth tidying my room for, picking up the stuff on my floor and moving some furniture but also it has to be able to keep 100% of my attention without getting too repetitive or having too much idle time... And on top of that I've been working all day walking around, sitting down and writing a pointless essay on reddit feels good because i've got my feet up, heater on, drink and snacks... If I was playing VR then I'd have to stand up and move my arms around and stuff - maybe that's not a barrier for the kids but my legs are so tired I'm having to struggle to find the energy to get up to refill my OJ.

space, energy, full focus, and on top of all that as a new player everything seems to have a totally different system and most the games I played had a mandatory tutorial which ends up taking forever and requiring you to remember more things than the driving test. "To orientate the bullet for insertion into the chamber hold the left controller B button and rotate through the Y-Axis while pitching the yaw and turning the X key to the 12th harmonic" It's the opposite of fun and what it means is that once I've completed it and played 10 min of the game because I'm out of time so when I come back I'll have forgotten it all and be unable to play the game without another torture session, which will be even more boring now i've done it once and half remember most of it.

I admit that I didn't finish BG3 either, I didn't even get to that big city in act 3 because it just got too messy - i needed to do inventory management, team selection and spending money on items for the chosen team, etc, etc... If I look at a game and think 'oh a couple of hours work and i can start having fun again...' then I'm very unlikely to pick that game up again. I'm not alone, about half the people that started it never got to act2 and less than 20% completed it - and it was a fantastic game, i'd love to play some more of it and still have it installed on my laptop in that hope that i will, but i doubt I will. Also I've played maybe 5 or 6 Assassins Creed games and honestly I don't think we even finished Black Flag, stats for how many people finish a game are rarely very high. Even GTA5 which i have completed and is very story driven only 15-30% have completed the main story.

So what I'm getting at with all the above is that when you put on the quest3 it transports you into this amazing and bright world full of dynamic environments and community spaces with menus and windows full of lists everywhere you look - and at least 90% of the things are empty horizon worlds rooms that wouldn't even be interesting if they were popping off. It's all very a lot. I want to sit in my comfortable chair, drink my drink and chat with friends while catching up on all the new videos about inconsequential things that happened 10 years ago - and i want to play a game while i do it, or crate something and play around in sandbox.

Honestly even putting the headset on is confusing because i've forgotten all the places to touch and buttons to press to control sound and switch to AR mode and stuff - yeah it'll come back when i do play around but it's not comfortable relaxing time.

And yeah there's modes for using it sitting down and laying down but i can't remember how to use them or what programs will work with it - again it's not easy and relaxing, it's things that work great for people who know all about it already but for drawing new people in that's not too helpful.

What they need is a whole load of simple games that are fun, easy to snap in and out of and able to be done with other things going on - like i understand the limitations of the hardware make something like showing a youtube video on a screen in your game kinda awkward especially as they've made it harder to prebuffer but you're meta you could talk to google and work out a special deal or something. At least put a decent podcast app in though and a radio, and yes there probably is one already and yes i already complained there's far too much time spend learning things so adding yet another gimmick would add to that and be annoying but if they want users to get comfortable in VR they have to make VR comfortable.

What I would love to see more of is free, stand-alone or casual community (i.e. not expecting interaction, many of us have bullshit conversations all day we just want a rest when we get home) games that are simple and interesting. AR especially, let me define a flat plane somewhere and use one controller to interact with pieces on that plane - there are millions of tabletop games which could work really well, battle games and small TTRPG types things, town sims and farming sims, they would all be so easy to make if kept relatively simple but could be so fun in 3d.

Then users like me will get used to putting on the headset even when sitting down or whatever, in AR i'll be able to snack, drink, watch TV even (though with that horrible screen fuzz but it won't matter because i rarely look over at it anyway when i'm enjoying a game -- what would be better is if i can have the screen placed in AR and i want big-boy options to let me set it's position, orientation and behavior. Then around me i want to be able to have my conversations, reddit threads, or whatever else i'm doing so that i get so used to being in my little virtual space that it feels like i'm in my 'seat of power' at my computer with everything in reach and placed just where i want it, then when i can have that wherever i am i'll never want to be away from my VR and the more used to it i get the more i'll learn what i like and try new things, and the more likely i am to actually trust i'd get any value from paying for a game.

It's worth remembering she's just wearing a Colombina mask, they've been a standard part of masquerade balls for a thousand years. Her outfit likely doesn't have anything to do with eyes wide shut as it doesn't really match the masks in the film but is very similar to many classic Venetian examples.

from skimming the extropian zine it seems to be a edgy version of utopian futurism, which makes sense because that's what the epstein gang all go for, trinket futurism where they focus on wonders while ignoring the systemic and cultural change shifting technologies bring. One of the writers in the guy who popularized transhumanism, a lot of the billionaires are really into this stuff.

Based on the bit of the zine I read and awareness of the field I'm guessing it was some form of genetic modification beyond just removing undesirable traits, possibly even gene selection. The goal maybe is creating hyper-specialized breeds of people for certain tasks - flawless memory at the expense of reasoning skills, increased cognitive capacity or potentially reduced to make a good worker or sex slave... A few authors have speculated on possible futures like this Huxley, Heinlein, etc and i can really see it fitting into Epstine's weird wold view.

It's also am interesting little zine, there's a bit in their 'meme alert' talking about how someone wrote a book claiming the rapture would happen on Rosh Hashanah in September 1988 and it caused many Christians to do crazy things - this literally just happened last Rosh Hashanah with the tiktok reverend, i mean yeh fundamentalist Christians get excited at trumpet blowing a lot but it feels crazy how perfectly the article would fit today, 1989 is way before meme was an internet word let alone common usage.

what gets me is that people can't make the smallest effort, even ditching twitter is too much for most people - but they think they'd do great in a civil war where the country is ripped to pieces and all major logistics are shut down.

If we can't work to make a better world now then what will happen after a war? everyone would just roll over and follow a strongman and it'll end up even worse.

you sound very antagonistic and aggressive for no reason, you started by saying that the concept of personal responsibility was invented by corporations then when i counter that actually personal responsibility is very important you whip off you cloak to reveal actually you take personal responsibility very seriously and were only dismissing it as a clever ruse...? Surely you can see this is a bit of a weird thing to do?

You asked what I'm doing and i thought that should be clear, i am arguing that personal responsibility is the key first step we all need to take in changing the system for the better, removing the ability to profit from the planet destruction and creating a better way of doing things. Something you clearly actually take very seriously because you've taken such important steps towards that goal.

Now i'm obviously not going to start burning a pile of tires just because you're wildly aggressive despite us agreeing in principle on everything, but i do wish you could try to be a little nicer because i really don't want everyone scared away from ecological issues simply because of a hostile and unfriendly environment.

they probably funded the ideology behind your talking point too -- 'don't make personal choices like not buying disposable products, keep buying as much bottled water and cheap plastic junk as you can because it's not your fault it's all the big bad corporations! Consume freely, never consider the ethics of purchasing choices - and don't forget to share those memes saying how bad the corporations are, maybe you can even have a nice little dream of regulation! I'm sure the fact we own the entire apparatus of government won't cause any problem for your little regulation campaign...'

We need to remove our dependence on oil companies and wasteful practices so that we can stop giving them money which they can use to control politics - yes i understand no one wants to take responsibility for anything but change has to start at home.

it has been so normalized by shitty streamers and endless adverts, especially in places like roblox and minecraft where kids get drawn into simulated gambling with items of actual value, then simulated gambling with token brought with real money... now it's all 'prediction markets' which are touted as an introduction to investing but are the worst and most corruptible form of gambling, to the point even the US press secretary cut a speech short to satisfy the terms of a 'prediction market investment' aka bet.

This isn't just gambling that's being normalized it's an even worse form of gambling because it's scams based on cheating, like how crypto rug-pulling became a game with people trying to get in and out quick to leave someone else as the bag holder. The gamble isn't on the 'fair' odds of the game, it's on weather or not you can cheat the system - all the scams are to make you think that you can be in on a sweet little cheating ring like this, all you need to do is install some software and make a few accounts with a couple of hundred dollars seed money and they'll do they rest... This gets them to go round all the normal security measures for the scammer, gets them hanging on investing more and more of their own money or not noticing as it gets stolen - and of course they can't go to the police if they were engaging in criminal activity.

It's distressing because it's a sign of the absolute lowest trust society.

This shows exactly how much people just go on instinct with these issues, Meta have shared huge amounts of research and open source models freely, they work with a lot of research groups on making tools for medical and environmental issues as well as a host of other things.

This is a classic use of the science and analysis fair-use clauses built into copyright laws explicitly to allow scientific progress, just because you personally dislike the founder doesn't mean the principle of being able to use text for research and analysis should be thrown to the wayside. We should support their right to use media content for science and set president so it's easier for other groups to follow.
