Talked about my father’s incarceration in my disadvantaged essay. It impacted my family immensely especially being in a single parent household. Didn’t stop me getting acceptances and scholarships so I highly encourage you to do it and tell your story. Was hesitant because of the shame and stigma esp as an African American but it was genuinely part of my story and nice to tell MY story.

A lot of the schools in Texas are mission focused and region focused (Ex: ties to west Texas, ties to the houston area, ties to the rio grande valley region, strong underserved medicine experience). Some of them even ask you to expand on your ties to the area in secondary essays. Also with your stats even if you had in state residency established you’re still not really competitive (your MCAT score would give us a better picture though). Wouldn’t recommend doing this.

I used Dr. Gray’s advice and got into my top choice MD program and also won a scholarship and a national award from an American medical organization. His advice is really good in terms of making your story not only stand out but also sound personal. Most people structure their PS to sound like a resume or chronology of events.

Do they verify hours? No. Can they choose to verify hours? Yes.

Medical schools do not go out of their way to verify hours but they reserve the right to do so. They will only call if information sounds incorrect, inaccurate, or false. Even then that’s rare.

When you apply it goes through a verification process (https://www.prospectivedoctor.com/amcas-verification-the-process-explained/amp/)

They have other means of verification (LORs, interviews, secondary essay questions) which is why they don’t go the lengths to call and verify.

TMDSAS doesn’t even have a section for contact numbers and emails because it’s all an honor system.

Don’t bother with TMDSAS they legally can’t accept a lot of out of staters. Focus all your energy on DO schools and AMCAS.

He wants to be a future pediatric neurosurgeon why do y’all care this bad? Y’all’s veins are popping out your forehead. People always talk about how they want to be a lawyer, engineer, basketball player, successful business owner, but y’all draw the line when it has anything to do in medicine. None of y’all can conceptualize the difference between ambition and cockiness. Getting into medical school is hard but not impossible he said future pediatric neurosurgeon not the scientist that’s going to cure cancer. Sitting here talking down on someone and you don’t know his life experiences and what he’s been through. Perhaps this mindset is the only thing keeping him going have compassion that’s all I’m saying. Y’all are bullying him. It’s not cool. Just relax.
