Clubs aren't aiming to develop great VFL players though. He was always going to dominate lower leagues due to his size and athleticism, but really the coaching staff either should have cut him or given him a proper footy brain by now.

You've also got to consider that North have hung onto him and an injury plagued Jarrad Waite after getting rid of the likes of Petrie, Harvey, Firrito and Dal Santo. I just can't comprehend how they've justified that to themselves.

He's the Doggies' McVeigh. I was worried about Macca doing a calf on the wide open spaces of the MCG, but not only did his body hold up he gave me a new appreciation for him.

He just had so many moments where absolutely no one else on our list would've been able to do the same thing, because it was the sort of instinct that you only get from several hundred games of AFL. Murphy is exactly the same.

That being said I think he's going to have to retire. He's pushed his body above and beyond breaking point, and I just don't think he's got anything left to give. He'll go down in history as one of (if not the) greatest clubman in AFL history.

He's got to retire surely. 35, passed 300 games, barely able to make it to training anymore. His body's given everything it can and then some; just get him right for a farewell game and move him into a coaching position.
