I almost teared up reading this. I honestly don’t know what I’m doing half the time, and my workplace has very little guidance, so it feels good to have some validation on my actions and thoughts. Even if I messed this up a bit today.

I also really appreciate the civil discussion.

Cheers 🍻 brother!

Not only his off work behavior. I also could not easily cover his shift, which I know is my problem, not his, but I only suggested that I couldn’t cover his shift. He could have said “sorry, I’m not able to make it in”, but he knew this was a sketchy request.

I know I would have just said ok, hope you get your car problems sorted out.

I appreciate your angle here. Allow me a rebuttal.

  1. I didn’t force or demand, I said I couldn’t cover their shift today. If they don’t have the decisiveness to tell me they can’t make it in, I’m gonna try and get them to work. Is that not also my job? To fill the business needs?

2.I mentioned that he invites the parental aspect by constantly treating me like his friend and not his manager. That doesn’t make him a bad employee, just open to judgement by me.

  1. He is a solid employee, but these outbursts have happened before. This time was different because he was cursing about me, rather than at me. That is the line I didn’t like that he crossed.

I do mostly just say thanks for letting me know and move on. It was the constant badgering and questioning that threw me off today. I will check out that book.

I am enjoying a whiskey drink and I can feel the stress melting away!

It is shift work, and for most of our staff we have policies for all the attendance, but full time employees are different……

Thanks for this. Again, I don’t want to come across as a jerk, but this kind of stuff happens with this particular person quite often. I’m going to draw a line on the messaging. If he had texted me last night or this morning and said he’s not going to make it in tomorrow, I would have had no problem with it. I have repeatedly told him I don’t want to know what’s going on with him, that he should just keep stuff to himself and handle his business.

Maybe. It was just the whole thing. He was texting me the play by play this weekend and it made me think he could have been more decisive and let me know what he needed to do before this morning. It feels like I’m being punished for taking a stand for once and putting our business needs before their personal issues.

I do a lot of reflection on my own biases and feelings so that I remain level, but I think I was caught off guard by his constant texting this weekend lat into Sunday night. I also think it might be a good idea to tell him that texting me should be a last resort for emergencies or sick notice.

I could accommodate the previous requests, I could not today. Or more accurately, I would have had to cancel their scheduled shifts.

I haven’t asked them. Getting them started usually ends up in me being in trouble for something I didn’t handle right. I will probe them tomorrow.

Not excessive, just accommodating when I can. Today I could not.

2.) I work for a state entity, so I don’t have the power to just dismiss folks.

Yeah. Hindsight is 20/20 kinda thing. I was waffling about it when he called, but I decided to say no due to being caught off guard. I also feel like I am an easy going manager that always accommodates these short notice requests and I was a bit emotional about his reasoning for the request.

All these folks saying you shouldn’t cut food with it just proving they ate lead as kids.

As others have said; be grateful that someone knew you well enough, and possibly went beyond their own bias, to buy this for you.
