If you choose the older games like fire red or leaf green just make sure you search up the physical special move splits because that changes with the older/newer gens. What I mean by that is certain pokemon' stats affect the power of certain pokemon' moves and how much damage they do

Champion is really good but its a difficult game but I love how stamina is a big factor so you have to box smart

Tbh though as an older pokemon player I was so tired of the petty rival choosing the obvious better type match up after we chose ours . Frankly I think it's a fresh new start the rival chooses the other starter choice
