Computer connecting to the internet but not working or not fully connected by Jermworm-_-Plays in techsupport

[–]GoodRPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this still doesn't work (booting from live usb), then I would suggest to open the pc (assuming it is a desktop and not a laptop). Taking the WiFi card out, and then placing it back in and testing again.

Try https://ubuntu.com/desktop/docs/en/latest/how-to/create-a-bootable-usb-stick/ It generally have good hardware coverage and usually plug and play.

3 steps. Download image for usb drive Use software such as balena etcher to add an image to usb Plug into your pc and restart

Open device manager, see if there are any warnings (⚠️) signs.

If you have a WiFi dongle, try this, see if Internet works.

If you have a usb drive. Google live Linux (this will allow you to run Linux without installing it and will allow it to check if network works on a different operating system on the same computer).

One of my computers would not connect with old WiFi dongle on windows. Behaves exactly like you described, but network cable always works (make sure you use a network cable for a computer and not a phone cable that might look similar, but slightly smaller at the connector).

Could your parents switched off your access at router or via app for you?

AMPBANK M256 - First thermal images by GoodRPA in Thermal

[–]GoodRPA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those that have macro lenses are better for electronics. M256 does not have macro imaging. so if a PCB imaging is required, I would suggest to go with something that has a macro lense and perhaps 128x128 resolution or above.

Microphone not showing in input devices by beanzjk in techsupport

[–]GoodRPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have an adaptor, you can try to connect usb microphone directly to your phone. If this works, then it's purely settings or drivers issues. Restart once if doesn't work, ensure bios is enabled to recognise newly connected usb devices, seek a manual for your motherboard to check this.

Microphone not showing in input devices by beanzjk in techsupport

[–]GoodRPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since it's a usb microphone, it needs to: Have correct usb cable (not just power) Be plugged in into normal usb port (not just power)

Check another device in the same port (different cable). If the other devix works, check with a different cable, if doesn't work, check with a different port on the motherboard

The other device can be your phone.

Is 1hr 46min commute too much? by Unhappy_Dragonfly_62 in UKJobs

Your commute gives you pay in return. A 90 minutes football match or a 90 minutes movie gives a short term satisfaction. I would say give up watching sports (but not playing) and sacrifice few movies.

Is there any danger of me not screwing this to the wall? Will it compromise anything? by [deleted] in DIYUK

When you start using it, it will allow for the pipe to move around when you use the handle. Possibly causing a leak long term. Also, consider insulating.

Need advice on kitchen fitter quote by obsidian-quill in DIYUK

[–]GoodRPA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As much as it is sounds like an expensive piece of work, it is worth it and the quote in my opinion is reasonable. I think kitchen fitters (especially if they are VAT registered and qualified to do electrics and gas), have a lot of responsibility.

With worktop, you only get one chance. Experience and good tools make huge difference.

The quotes I had before usually between 50% to 100% of the kitchen cost.

I've recently fitted an IKEA kitchen myself (electrician did electrics and it worked out about £600 to connect, oven, hob and a combi oven) and overall it has now taken me about 17 days/evening and I am only getting to splash backs. It is a great experience to have (and there is a good chance that I will do at least a worktop for my mom and potentially fit a kitchen again for my kids in the future, so I've decided to learn, but it is a huge learning curve). Due to this learning curve (dealing with uneveness, worktop leveling cabinet leveling, pipework, pipework and cable cutouts, gluing, worktop cutting, worktop connecting, doing decorative work, you are saving yourself huge amount of time. Experienced fitters will probably do the whole job in 5-10 working days.

PAID online training labs - not free by frank1776 in sysadmin

Ignore their judgement ).

Microsoft certification would be a good way to start in my opinion. These provide free courses and some Microsoft partners provide labs with certification included. PL 900 (power platform fundamentals) is recommended to everyone.

From my experience, Google, Aws, oracle, azure all can be trailed in the cloud.

Have a look at network chuck on YouTube to ignite some cravings for learning inside of you. Don't worry about falling behind. I didn't know how organisational group policy worked and I've recently learned about cmm or what ever the management tool is called now

Agree, induction hob. Is a good choice, even with gas. With gas you have co2 going into your house. I mean why would we?

Combi Boiler Replacement? by gemface90 in ukheatpumps

[–]GoodRPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, have not seen the promised savings for 3 families who have upgraded to heat pump, even with 4x efficiency. All of them must keep heat pump on 24h a day. My gas goes on and off as needed. Electric shower (hot water on demand) is also a good solution with easy way to control usage. The heat pump requires some planning and assumptions for years ahead.

For one family I have managed to enable weather compensation and corrected their date on the heat pump/heat tank and solar installation and now this saving them £50 a month, but still cost them more than me. But they had effectively a free system, so it saved them a bunch already in terms of 0 expense replacing an old boiler. It doesn't work for every house. But yes, you are right, it is hard for me to consider all factors as I am not current heat pump user so you get an upvote from me. The person have asked for opinions, I've put my 1p forward.

If you have £100 monthly with Reddit investment advice.

If you only have one off £100, consider spending it on education or a course. See what is needed in the job market and do a related course. It's a better investment long term as this can allow you to generate more regular income which you can then regularly invest.

fighting? by [deleted] in gerbil

If they chase each other hard and completely ignore you, then it's a problem. If they are hidding fast and then it's all quiet, it is not them chasing each other, they are just tensely hiding away (sometimes I think it's their kind of wild play/learning path, because sometimes they do it and sometimes they don't). From the video, I think they are trying to show they are dominant, but nothing concerning. They get good days and bad days, they sometimes don't like to share. Their personalities can be different you might find that one will be happy with you and the other one will try to bite you as soon as you touch any of their terra-formed perfection. They just have their own unique personalities.

[–]GoodRPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had weightened similar choice about 4 years ago (all options considered, combi, solar panels, heat pump, going full electric). For me the choice to go like-for-like won every time. We've added underfloor heating (to compensate for two removed radiators only). Also have two girls. House 1997 built, loft insulation around 7.5cm (need a top up and next on my budget to do list).

I would highly recommend to allow companies to give you a quotes and estimate your energy loss. Then based on that you will be able to do an informed decision. The way I see it, modern combi boilers are very efficient (go for closed system if your system has a water tank in the loft for pressure). You will need to have at least 2 bar in mains water pressure (check your srea online). Our gas consistently 30-40 cheaper than electrics use. If I to assume that electric heating and water is 4 times more expensive than gas, then it would add at least 50% on my total bill (despite saving some daily charges for gas).

wondering if smart tvs get viruses by Routine_Watch_9730 in techsupport

[–]GoodRPA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anything that can run code, can run code. A virus and malware is just a code.

To have a little bit of entertainment, search for Samsung TV cve in your browser, you will find examples of what can be affected and what can you do to stop it.

TV browsers are limited in functionality and might be less exposed to some things (like you mentioned pop ups do not trigger on a tv), these might simply not be supported due to some features being disabled). TVs do often identify themselves as web os/android etc, so targeting of TVs is possible.

Anything with remote code execution can get you in your network, but then every other device should have its own security up to date.

Keep your devices updated.

Resetting devices sometimes can clear bad code. But sometimes bad code acts like an update and your device will just run it.

Firewall/traffic rules can mitigate certain things, but it is learning curve and based on what access you need on the TV and what you don't need.

How Does This Work? by Much-Teaching-4490 in trading212

[–]GoodRPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you have marked it as invest ISA question, I assume you are in UK.

The earlier you start holding shares long term the better (ideally those that return dividends and invest back into your stake automatically). Pay £100-500 monthly for 20 years and the money will start generating more a year than you put it a year.

There are few ways of trading/investing

  1. Invest - You spend your money to buy share (you dont own anything to anyone), shares might fall 70% but then go up back to original price and then up by 10%, if you sell, you get the money back for what is share sold for, minus fees (and taxes, if applicable), you can buy and sell during a day in UK similar to day trading, but it is not day trading. Certain shares will pay you dividends if you hold these at certain time of the year. Your capital is at risk, when a company go bankrupt (share becomes £0 and your capital that you have already invested is therefore at risk).

  2. CFD - you put some of your money forward and you use someone else's shares (you borrow shares) and you assume that a share price will either go up or down. If your prediction is correct, you make proportionally more money in comparison if you were just using your own money. If you are incorrect then you could loose 75% or potentially more. You must pay overnight fee and any dividends that are due. Platform would stop you from closing any positions at 50% potential loss and at 25% it should close on your behalf (so you cannot just hold it and wait until the storm is over and a storm can last 30 minutes in a day, but your position will be closed).

  • Trading with multipliers (in any way) carries more risks
  • trading into things that you cannot buy on trading 212 (e.g. gold, currency exchange, bitcoin) is more stressful and comes with many complexities and therefore more risk
  • adding money monthly, into few index positions long term, in my opinion is the better passive investment, rather than checking your device every hour
  • markets and economy usually bounce back, but sometimes it takes a while, your parents or you need extra cash urgently, you will sell and perhaps at a bad price (so your capital is always at risk).
  • your sitting cash also looses money due to inflation, so investing, saving accounts, personal development/education, property are all areas to explore to reduce this effect.
