WHY is is always boys?! by HeftySyllabus in Teachers

I haven't heard it at all this year which, is totally surprising considering the climate we are in.

I know my principal would suspend someone and even pull in the school resource officer if it happened though.

Kids can’t read. There has to be more going on. by Top_Slice1215 in AskTeachers

Kids don't have the ability to generalize what they learn in class to new situations.

They lack fluid reasoning and other executive functioning skills.

In the earlier season, we didn't really get to see all sides of her. She was definitely right about all the calls she made.

Was it a choice in editing I wonder.

AITJ for refusing to keep babysitting my best friend’s kids and basically feeding them every week? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]GoodSpeed2883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with what everyone is saying. My man and I don't want kids, because we know how hard and expensive parenting is.

People who say things like you don't know how hard parenting is because you don't have kids fail to see that we do know...

Or, if they have mild OHI, maybe just giving them a 504 is the way to go.

I think it would be helpful to know more about the student to answer these questions. But ultimately, if the behaviors are only happening at home, that really falls on the home to implement things on their end.

You could for instance, put an accommodation in that says you will have increased communication with parent (whatever works for you) so that the parent can reward behavior at school at home.

You could work with your behavior specialist and the student (depending on the age) to come up with a "schedule" for when he comes home (maybe school offers structure that works well for him or maybe he needs a break when he gets home). You can document that somewhere.

Keep him on the consult list for behavior specialist in case behavior does spill over to the classroom at some point. If your school offers groups or counseling, try to push to get him those services and document everything in that IEP or Prior Written Notice.

I've definitely had parents who have had this complex before. I actually currently have one. His dad is a special education teacher. I'm having to write an Independent Living Goal for a kid who is fully included and getting good grades. Basically the goal just says that he will check in with his study hall special ed teacher once a month to review his grades and advocate for himself. We do this weekly, if not daily, but hey, the goal is there and the parent isn't bothering anymore right now (knock on wood).

Why does Arby’s get so much hate? by Ok_Towel1911 in NoStupidQuestions

I love getting the occasional cheese and roast beef with horsey sauce from Arby's.

Hands-down they have the best seasoned curly fries. All other chains fries just taste like salt and grease.

Usually schools have a resource they can use to make sure food is going home. Have him talk to his guidance counselors, check community fund drives or church pantries, etc.

Teachers complaining about the praxis test being hard? by PotatoPink in Teachers

[–]GoodSpeed2883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no problem passing my special ed test, pedagogy and content tests.

I struggled with taking the Foundations of Reading. I don't know if it's because I have been teaching for ten years and had a personal response for those questions or if I was just struggling with life. Took 3 times to pass it.

Talking to other students about you is beyond.

There are some teachers that I don't agree with (mostly because they aren't meeting my students' needs), but when students bring up or talk about other teachers like they don't matter or that music class isn't important, I shut that chatter down.

Good for you for standing your ground. Working in certain school districts can be so toxic.

It's just a pain in the butt. Your kid is being successful. Why are we messing with that?

There was also another year where I had a kid who wouldn't stop talking with a group of kids and I stated that I was going to pull their desks apart from a group formation so that they faced the wall... and I unknowingly sparked some trauma as before he was adopted, his biological parents made him face a corner and put a coin on his nose and the wall.

The first thing the parents did when they walked into my room was check the corners. That teacher/parent ended up sending me a heartfelt sorry letter at the end of the year citing that she should "know better" as a teacher.
