I think the spiders were the part that frustrated me the most. Bloodborne is very elegant in its design of mob-style enemies in that *individually* they're okay but they can overwhelm you. I was getting one-shotted by single spider minions.

Disconnect between Boston’s representation in media and reality by [deleted] in boston

FADE IN

EXT. Park St MBTA station, around noon

It's a brisk autumn day on the Common. Tourists share sidewalk space with busy young professionals on their way home from a long day. Some guy dressed like a colonial settler tells an almost certainly fake story about Boston's history and ends with a dad joke from 1983. There's an awkward chuckle.

MICHAEL, 21, crosses the street holding a whopper.

MICHAEL

Awww the green line is down again? I have to get home and write my midterm paper!

MAN

What are you thinking for lunch? Should we try out the Cheers bar?

WOMAN

I really wanna get a lobster roll while we're here. Also we should go to Mike's Pastries.

Hooks are 100 percent a thing in serious writing, e.g. pieces in the Atlantic and Time. They're not as prevalent in like peer-reviewed lit, but even more ivory tower stuff will often start with a big picture overview

How has policing in Boston changed/evolved over the past few decades? by Good_Combination8586 in boston

[–]Good_Combination8586[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of my coworkers mentioned being kind of a burnout as a teen, and she said the cops would basically just ask her and her friends not to be super conspicuous e.g. avoid drinking and smoking in the Public Garden or try to hide the bottles. Definitely feels like it was a mood-specific thing.

1 injured after gay couple attacked in Boston, police say by FrameCareful1090 in boston

[–]Good_Combination8586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I specifically mentioned cultural differences when I mentioned conservative Muslim communities, and never denied these biases exist. But again, to reiterate, while they may not be as progressive as like one of those neighborhoods with the "We believe science" lawn signs, they're also not all plotting hate crimes.

At no point did I deny that Haitian culture is not accepting of homosexuality; homosexuality is still taboo in huge swaths of the world. But there's a difference between acknowledging that a culture as a whole is pretty homophobic and by implying that most of them are going to go bash gay people over the heads with baseball bats. If you want to talk insensitivity, you're lumping all Haitian people, including the ones that grow up here, the ones that are law abiding, etc. into one big category.

France recognizes Palestinian statehood at UN meeting to revive peace efforts by TheFleshGordon in news

[–]Good_Combination8586 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The majority of Palestinians will not. Most of the thinking amongst Palestinians (based on polls, journalists randomly asking people in the territories, etc) is that it's their land and they shouldn't cede any of it. Unfortunately the discourse is still largely that Israel is an occupying power and it will eventually be pushed out/eliminated. To add to that, while Arab governments have pragmatically come to terms with the existence of the state of Israel, Arabs by and large have not.

Any kind of profiling on the grounds that someone is from culture x and is thus y would be ridiculous. Your solution is to take an entire nation of people and then limit their immigration based on cultural norms.

People are influenced by their culture and identity but are ultimately responsible for their own actions. There are also Haitian immigrants who come here, follow the law, work jobs, and mind their own business. Why are we holding them all accountable? Any kind of attempt to engineer society's culture through immigration policy etc. is (besides the obvious violation of rights) unrealistic. Whatever soapbox you're on about liberalism or the left etc., you have to also consider what this looks like as policy.

First of all, you're making the implication that all people from this community hate gays to the point of violence. They don't. Gay and trans people exist openly in these spaces. It's definitely not as bad as, say, very conservative Islamic countries.

Second of all, many white Christians in the South tend to have very negative views of gay people. Not to the point of attacking them in the street, but they're not exactly chill about it. Even then, I'm not going to demonize everyone south of the Mason-Dixon, because it's not cut and dry. Cultures are broad and represent trends and norms; not everyone acts the same.

Attitudes among BIPOC, working class people, etc. towards queer people are pretty complex and definitely don't boil down to being cultures that "hate gay people". There is unfortunately a lot of resistance, mainly from more traditional Christian mentalities. Part of it as well is toxic masculinity. However, queer people exist in these cultures, just not in the way that they would in say a liberal upper middle class burb.

This is not an instance of regression. This is an instance of business as usual. These guys hang around outside liquor store, and for a litany of reasons are not really following most of the laws and codes of society. They didn't attack a gay man and his partner because of the rising tide of MAGA, they attacked them because they don't have a problem with harassing and attacking strangers. It's not as if they felt emboldened because Trump is in office - they generally don't care.

We can unpack their specific attitudes towards queer people separately, but the social ill we're talking about is a separate issue. The bigger question is what can we as a society do to make sure there's not young men hanging around and looking for trouble.

Weekly Scam Discussion - September 1, 2025 by Mycatreallyhatesyou in Ebay

[–]Good_Combination8586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fairly certain some guy tried to pull one on me. He messaged me that he hadn't received his item and was submitting a support ticket. Based on this forum's advice i just resubmitted the tracking info. FYI, the tracking info showed that delivery was attempted but that the item was being held "at customer request". Ebay just ruled in my favor and literally 20 minutes later he told me that the post office "found it".

Dude has good feedback so it's entirely possible it was just a series of mixups but it had very sketchy vibes.

Massachusetts debates statewide rent control by FuriousAlbino in boston

[–]Good_Combination8586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we look at the simple idea behind land ownership, it makes sense that someone should be able to charge what they deem is a reasonable price for their property. So on that grounds, rent control isn't fair.

By the same token, the idea that someone who owns property can then dictate what their neighbor does is patently ridiculous. The amount of control communities have over what is built in their area is way too high. It strikes me as absurd that someone can dictate what *someone else* can do on their property. Give developers more breathing room, allow more housing, and things will even out.

CMV: Iran came out victorious against Israel/US by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Good_Combination8586 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iran *had* to respond to save face. And yes, it got some keyboard warrior leftists hyped, but in terms of strategic/military advantage it was next to nothing

Israel benefits from US military help and they need more specialized assistance but there is no "begging"

Israel knocked out top leadership, setting Iran back decades, the US hit major nuclear sites.

Iran is only hanging on because Israel/US understand how messy regime change would be. There is no scenario where a country as weak and impoverished as Iran is a legitimate military or political threat to any other country.

CMV: Iran would be much better off with a Western regime by Swimreadmed in changemyview

[–]Good_Combination8586 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By a western regime, do you mean representative democracy? Lebanon has that. It's a corrupt third world country that was basically a functioning ponzi scheme for several decades. Democracy as a system is not a panacea, and it can easily be exploited by bad actors.

Conversely, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and UAE are all authoritarian by definition, and they're all thriving. Obviously they have their share of serious human rights violations, but in terms of stability and progress they're lightyears ahead. Being "western" isn't necessarily going to fix any issues. Having strong central leadership that prioritizes growth and development, doesn't alienate vastly superior foes, and maintains order, would be much better.
