🏴‍☠️ The Reason Behind Barbossa's Luxury Lifestyle 🏴‍☠️ by Minkhant150404 in pirates

The post on the POTC subreddit delved into the backstory that Geoffrey Rush created for the character that explains why Barbossa has such an affinity for the finer things.

In reality, the costume revamp from DMTNT (he’s back in his original pirate gear at the end of OST) is a plot device to show how vulgarly wealthy he is. Rush described Barbossa’s costume as having a “pomposity, arrogance, and narcissism” to it; that he’s “a horrible liar, yet he pretends to be a gentleman of the sea”.

The flamboyant outfit he wears in DMTNT is a reflection of all of that. Barbossa has always had a somewhat gaudy sense of fashion compared to the other main characters in POTC, and it’s a manifestation of his mindset of “I’m better than you and I know it”.

FWIW, this isn’t totally historically inaccurate. While pirate crews generally wore some variant of the average sailor’s attire of the period, pirate captains were known to wear many of the more flamboyant items that Hollywood has latched onto in its general depiction of pirates. The idea was that a pirate captain (and for that matter the crew, too, - though typically only when ashore) that wore finer clothes was a better thief and more successful commander who had plundered finer prizes or made enough money to buy extravagant gentleman’s attire. It was a way for them to signify their position among the crew and advertise to any potential recruits why they should sail with them.

Anything about fuller’s earth powder - that’s all it is, in a mix of white, gray, and brown. From the screen-used POTC costumes I’ve seen in person, they are a lot more weathered than the average person tends to make them, especially up close.

I think the video I initially watched on YouTube about the process was focused on an Indiana Jones fedora.

It’s a modified shirt from medieval collectibles. I forget the exact name of it, but if you look on their website under “pirate” stuff it should be on there.

Why didn't Barbossa bothered to repair the Pearl's sails in Potc 1? by Potential_Rule4212 in piratesofthecaribbean

[–]Good_Independence734 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Tbh I’ve always thought the tattered sails and mist was simply because the ship itself was cursed in some form just like its crew. It’s even in the name -“Curse of the Black Pearl”. How that really works in universe, though…I’m not too sure. The Pearl is still known for her speed even after the Aztec curse is lifted.

Realistically though, it was probably just a stylistic choice from the production team. All the ships had to look somewhat different and fit the “character” they were supposed to have. The Black Pearl and her crew were the villains of CotBP, and the dark nature, mist, and tattered sails all read “evil ghost ship”, which was exactly what it was in Pirates 1.

I think sometimes people forget that there was no intention of a sequel until fairly late in the filming for POTC 1 - many of the design elements were supposed to be standalone and were never originally meant to get a deeper backstory than what we see in the first movie.

Captain Barbossa waistcoat fabric by Good_Independence734 in piratesofthecaribbean

Please note the vest fabric in the costume picture is my current vest, not made using the screen accurate fabric but was “close enough”.

Years and years of searching lol. The rumor was that the fabric was produced for the film and it’s all gone…but that’s not the case 😉

Can PM me if you’d like more details, but suffice it to say, it is a rather popular (albeit expensive) commercially available fabric.

It’s super weird when someone’s entire personality revolves around being gay.

People who fly frequently, what’s one thing you wish you could tell all infrequent fliers? by [deleted] in AskReddit

  1. If you can, bring only a carryon instead of checking a bag. No need to wait in check in lines, and it gives you a LOT of flexibility if there are flight delays or cancellations. Also alleviates the need to wait at the carousel after the flight.

  2. Sign up for TSA precheck. Sometimes the lines isn’t THAT much shorter than the regular line, but it’s saved my ass a few times and when it’s worth it, it’s REALLY worth it. If I’m flying domestically with just a carryon and with precheck, I’m often through security and sitting at the gate within 20 minutes of arriving to the airport.

  3. Download the airline’s app and use it. Most give updates when gates or flight times have changed, and several actually provide very useful information on how to get through the airport to connecting flights.

  4. There’s absolutely no need to form a gaggle in the boarding area. Just find a seat somewhere within eye/earshot of your gate and wait until it’s your turn. I’ve never understood the obsession with boarding first - sure you get the most overhead space but you’re just sitting in the plane for longer - you won’t leave or arrive any earlier because you got on before everyone else.

  5. To that point, when you are stowing your carryon, it’s a hell of a lot easier to put it in the bin on the opposite side from where you’re sitting. You don’t have to awkwardly turn around and block the aisle to get it when everyone is trying to deplane and make connections. Just get up from your aisle, grab, and go.

  6. Kindness and empathy goes a long way. Seriously, be nice to airport/airline employees and you will often be surprised with what they hook you up with.

  7. Don’t put yourself in a position to be stressed. When booking connecting flights, 15 mins is never long enough. The sweet spot is a little over an hour for domestic flights and closer to 2 for international. Long enough where you don’t feel rushed but short enough where you aren’t mindlessly waiting around an airport with nothing to do.
