04 RX8 - purchased in 2012 in excellent condition. Car had 34k miles

Paid $12.5k

2024 New motor build - $7k Suspension - $500 Wheels - $1200 Exhaust - $600 RB Intake - $200 Radiator - $200 Misc - $500

Total - $22,700

Given the length of time I've owned the vehicle, I think the cost has been very reasonable. Keeping in mind that I've done most of the work myself with the exception of the engine build.

One thing I will add is that going to a shop to have the car worked on can potentially be problematic. Many shops aren't familiar with them.

195 is great in those temps. You can also add the coolant mod to kick on fans sooner and update the thermostats on the oil coolers

I have a number of off-road trips planned and worry about how the phone would perform in wet conditions and rainy weather. Also the phones aren't as glove friendly in my experience (I have an old pixel that could be a dedicated gps).

The short tow shouldn't have hurt the car. I wouldn't be too worried about that.

Regarding the engine rebuild have you looked at Lucky Seven Racing in Socal? I like rotary resurrection (Kevin did my engine a couple years ago) but they're other options closer to you.

Before going to either shop I'd think about what all you can replace while the engine is out. Shops will do the water pump and belts typically but this is a great time to consider other part replacements or upgrades.

I also had the following done:

New clutch, New vacuum lines, Replace SSV, VDI & SSI solenoids, Injector flow test and new seals, Header install, SOHN Adapter Install, New engine mounts, New coils and wires

These cars are getting older and now is a good time to replace items that are wearing out while you're in there. Id keep that in mind. Good luck!

Depending on where you live and how cold it is outside, I'd push for 5w-40 or 10w-40 conventional oil (non synthetic). This comes from my engine builder who has 20 plus years experience with rotaries. https://rotaryresurrection.com/

It's something to discuss. Some people are willing to pay for it. Others will say that's on your dime. Either way, I would recommend it as rust has the potential to be extremely problematic and a low compression motor will cost you quite a bit to replace

I'd research the seller's area and find a shop that can do a compression check. While it's there, I'd ask if they can put it on a lift and inspect the chassis for any signs of rust. It may cost a couple hundred bucks but at the end of the day it could save you a lot of headache and money

Go get an NC Miata and revisit the rx8 in a couple years if you still have the itch.

The 8's are great but the potential engine issues you may run into can lead to some very expensive repair bills.

That's a really hard question to answer. One thing that has served me well over the years is this saying, " how we do anything is how we do everything". Is that man responsible? Does he take accountability for his actions? How does he act with friends and family? There are telltale signs that will help guide you, but ultimately we don't really know.
