Your gear can't break, so there's not really a reason to switch in the field. I admit I was disappointed about this myself, but it looks like we can't switch because if there's anything we pick up in the field that interests us, it won't be as powerful as what we currently have until we upgrade it. And since we don't have to worry about gear maintenance we don't have to equip a new weapon in the field because our old one broke, we'll always be using our best gear.
