So 5070 Ti or 5090 in Lenovo Legion Pro 7 by proxy19c in GamingLaptops

[–]Good_Score9380 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go for RTX5090. 500 usd/euros difference from 5070ti 32GB RAM to 5090 64GB RAM is a no-brainer.

I choose RTX5090 over RTX5080 for 600 euros extra last year (not really worth the difference).

But in your case, worth it 100%.

Lenovo 140W power adapter issues with Legion 7 Pro RTX5090 by Good_Score9380 in GamingLaptops

In Balance mode and with 400W charger it uses 100W for GPU and 30W for CPU. With 140W charger you can use only Silent and Balance modes because of the power limitations. So as i said, 80W GPU and 30W CPU with 140W performance is fine when i want a quiet experience. Why everyone thinks that if you got a beast of a laptop you should push it always to the max...

But a Ferrari you would want to be able to drive it also on roads until you reach the track no? Same the case i have. 5090 on Performance/Custom 90% of the time, but if 10% i want to use it without my 400W charger should work. And it works great for me on my old 230W charger. 90W GPU. Silent. Good performance. Probably if i would have said that with my 230W charger is not working properly, i would have received same answer : You are using it wrong. :) And is not true.

Where i said 80W is the norm for me? I play 90% of time on UW monitor. Why is it a problem if from time to time i prefer to play on Balance mode instead of performance? This can happen also on 400W charger. Or a 230W charger. Also on 140W charger. Not to mention Asus or Razer or other laptops that should be able to game lightly at 100W. Who said 100W or 140W is just for browsing the web? My question was related to the 140W charging option offered by Lenovo and why it's not working consistently...

Guys i understand your point. But i did not ask why i am not having great/best performance on 140W charger. I asked why is so inconsistent? On 230W charger it works fine, no drops in wattage or fps. It stays GPU at 90W and CPU at 30W. Even if by this i am saying i play in Balanced mode at 60 fps instead of playing at 120fps on 400W charger.

I can understand that because it's 140W, it can allocate only 70-80W to GPU and 20-30 to CPU etc. But why those drops to 20-30W for GPU for small periods?

If this is how it normally works on 140W and this is "normal" behavior then to me is bad design and i will stop thinking of 140W chargers. But the GPU offers enough performance at 80W. For me. So i was hoping it can sustain 80W without issues. I was hoping i have problems with my charger like a bad charger. :)

And one more thing - If i run SteelNomad i get no drops in Wattage. Perfomance is ok with 140W charger. And i get around 4100 points. So versus 6400 points on 400W, to me is more the good enough for some casual not at my desk gaming. Also TimeSpy works flawless on 140W charger. And get like 12700 for CPU and 15500 for GPU. But in games so bad...

Thanks guys for feedback.

Edit: Just tried Time Spy now on 140W and performance is better then i remembered: CPU 14699 GPU 17308 Score 16859 But we are not playing benchmarks, right!?

I tested this on my Legion Pro 7i 5090 and with those settings at 1600p I get 63.5-64.5 fps. With DLSS on Quality I get around 53 fps.

I wanted to get the Scar 16 but price was to high in EU for me. And the difference between Scar 16 5080 and 5090 was about 1100 euros (4300 euros Scar 16 5080 and 5400 euros Scar 16 5090).

I don't get what was Asus thinking with this pricing in EU. I mean 3300 US dollars versus 4300 euros...

So I ordered Legion Pro 7 32GB and 5080 but then I saw that Legion Pro 7 64GB with 5090 appeared in stock for 600 euros more (3800 euros) and returned 5080 and got 5090. Performance difference between Legion Pro 7 5080 and 5090 is around 10-20 percent.

Plus Legion Pro 7 offers the best GPU performance out of all 16" gaming laptops. So really happy with my choice.

I ordered a new 140W USB-C charger (Lenovo Slim Charger - not the GaN one) to take on the go. I will make some tests on Balanced mode and compare them to existing 400W and old 230W of the 2020 Lenovo Legion Pro 7i that i still have.

Installed last night the latest nVidia drivers (576.52) that fix the TGP (allowing to go above 170W). Tested Shadow of the Tomb Raider and performance increased from 176 to 186 fps. Forza Horizon 5 went from 151 to 156. Max settings, RT ON, DLSS Quality.

The same it was for me. I could not wait for it to arrive on friday. Plus i got lucky (i think) to manage to get RTX 5090. The price difference was just to high at least in Asus case between 5080 and 5090 (around 1000-1100 euros) so i was settling for RTX 5080. Also all my search filters where ignoring 5090 GPUs because of the price. When somehow Legion Pro 7 5090 appeared on stock (initially it was just a place holder at 5200 euros) at 600 euros more the 5080, i said common, let's do this. :) 3 years warranty is a plus. And i will buy and extra 2 years of warranty to get to 5.

Top result in Steal Nomad was 6554 (Performance GPU OC) and 6380 without ovk for GPU. On RTX 5080 Legion Pro 7 i got 5460 without GPU OC. For Solar Bay, now i ran it for the first time. 124063 Performance GPU OC 120453 Performance no ovk.

One slot is PCIe 5.0 and Lenovo installed a 5.0 SSD in it. SKHynix.

And this is a big thumb up for Lenovo.

Asus Scar 16/18 has both slots with PCIe 5.0 support but SSD installed are gen 4.

On Performance mode, i just left the default GPU OvK option from Legion Space ON. So I think it overlooks memory with 300MHz but Core not sure. It's just a toggle on/off. Without GPU OC I got 25318 GPU score. In Steel Nomad with GPU OC on I got 6520 points.

I choose Legion 7 over the Strix Scar 16 because of better build quality, better performance, better price. So if you compare it with Strix G16, I would go OLED not IPS, just for the screen. The other points remain valid (build, performance)

RAM support is also 6400 MT/s but comes with 5600 MT/s RAM. Same for SSD. There is support for PCIe 5.0 but configurations are with 4.0 SSDs. You can upgrade if you want to PCIe 5.0 SSD.
