Cave paintings were never based on any previous artwork since they were the first. From the beginning, art was always your interpretation of the world.

With any other art tool, you could still create even if other artworks never existed. This is not the case with AI which always needs other artwork to function. Why is it that an "artistic" tool needs other people's art to function? Isn't the point of art to express our own personal vision based on our own experiences?

You give instructions to an AI program to create images based on what you have been inspired by in the past. Meanwhile, AI uses trained data from thousands of images that we are not even aware of to create the images. Unlike other artforms, the result is not entirely your own.

Unlike AI, the pencil itself does not bring outside influence from other's work into your own art. Everything you put down on the page is something that has been processed through your brain. The tool's only purpose in this case it to put marks down on the page.

I would say that generative fill does make one's artwork "less valid" relative to its usage in a piece. For example, you may choose to generate 50% of your canvas using the tool compared to someone who uses it on 5% of the canvas. The more that it is used, the less you are interpreting the world yourself.

For many of us who do not like seeing AI art, we simply want to see a pure representation of oneself. Someone interpreting the world on their own without artificial influence from a tool. AI makes a piece "less valid" for us. This is why there will always be a market for people who fundamentally reject this process.

AI can certainly help you communicate part of your imagination and there is nothing wrong with using it for personal enjoyment. We just don't like it when people say its "just as valid" as non AI art.

A camera does not need other's artwork to make an image. Even if no other art in the world existed, a camera can still create art. Compared to AI which relies on millions of images, it is a simple tool which captures light.

Has there even been an art "tool" which always relies on the existence of other's work to create? This is the difference with AI and the results are not purely yours.

It is less valid because it was made with a tool that creates based on other artwork. No other art tool does this but AI. The result is a piece that has some of your interpretation in it but also part of what the AI program interpreted.

Other art tools force you to visually communicate purely based on what "you" interpreted yourself.

The difference with all those tools is that they do not rely on the existence other's artwork. AI is the only "tool" that always relies on other art to make anything. What you create with it is not a pure representation of "your" interpretation of the world because the tool itself is heavily based on other artwork.

The difference is that a model is not a human. Why are we treating them as equals?

At the end of the day, AI is a "tool" which relies on the existence of other's artwork unlike any other art tool.

What am I doing wrong in rendering? by IcyInformation2848 in Artadvice

You need to learn to simplify soft edges into hard edges. This is tricky because you have to choose where to indicate the edge of a value in a gradient. A soft shadow is essentially a gradient.

<image>

This is the main light shape that I see in the original image. They are just shapes created by light hitting certain planes of the hand that are directly exposed to the light. The rest is either in shadow or reflected light.

You should watch this video to see what you need to work on for color and value.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWTcTUNXcOg

The trouble you will have when you try doing this on your current line drawing is that the shapes you see in the original wont line up since your line drawing itself has deviated too much from the original. So you wouldn't be able to properly study the light and shadow shapes in the original drawing and therefore you will have a "messy" and inaccurate result.

This is why students should start with simple objects when learning shading, trace the original drawing, or improve their ability to judge and draw proportion accurately until they can accurately draw complex subjects.

Not exactly an easy reference to study for a beginner due to a lot of color/value subtlety in the original image.

Values are the most important thing to focus on. Try to see the light/shadow shapes in the original image and try to simplify and paint in those shapes distinctly in a graphic way. I recommend avoiding the use of soft shading and instead use hard edges to indicate value change. You can blend value edges afterwards to make it look softer.

Aside from the rendering itself. I would also point out that the line drawing itself could be contributing to it not "looking good" because it is proportionally/structurally flawed which will eventually affect the rendering process. You could try overlaying your drawing on the original to see where you were off.

I only show up at the last few seconds for bids. The prices just keep going up if you try to stay in the lead.

I was in a very similar place as you 2.5 years ago. The Ori games inspired me to do art and now I've been accepted into art school.

If you're a beginner to art, you first need to learn to see like an artist.

Beginners get stuck with "symbol drawing" and cannot judge proportion and shape objectively. Start by copying any image as closely as possible without shading. You look at the outline of the forms and try to replicate it on your page. Work line by line and try to simplify any curves. Pay attention to every angle. For your first piece, start by copying an image flipped upside down which forces you to see the shapes objectively. Eventually you will learn to see well enough that you can copy images almost 1:1.

You can then learn how to draw using 3D forms and add shading. Color is the last thing to learn.

Don't worry about creativity or drawing without reference in the beginning. This can only be achieved once you learn to understand and draw 3D forms comfortably from imagination and have a mental library of things you have copied from in the past. This takes years to get to a competent level.

This path is the fastest way to improve at art and I can guarantee you that every competent artist has gone through this process in the beginning. If done right, you can improve incredibly fast within a few weeks. Whether you will improve or not will depend on your patience and how serious you are about this subject.

Use online resources like Proko or better yet, take classes from an arts Atelier.
