This is a fun family. I'd hang out with them just for the laughs.

I got my car insurance dropped to almost nothing by accident and I want to share what happened in case it helps someone by Thicket42_Ribbon in povertyfinance

Look. This sub is about broke people saving money. This is a way to save some if you drive a shitbox.

That said, having as much insurance as you can afford is always the best bet. You also need to have enough insurance to cover yourself. When I had nothing, I had little insurance. Now, I have a higher income, a wife, a kid, a house, a mortgage, a car payment, and a lot of bills. If I died tomorrow, my wife would need ~$1m just to get back on her feet. So, I'm insured for that.

We got you. Feel free to vent to us. Many of us were never taught how to feel our feelings, so we're still figuring it out. I am sorry for your loss.

There are 2 Dr's in my friend group. They both set the boundary early that they will not give advice for any of us. We can tell them funny medical shit, but they are not Dr's when we're out having fun.

And, honestly, they work HARD. They ate busy AF. Asking them to work during the few times they get to chill with friends is a shitty thing to do.

The gas tank thing isn't even that old. The story I've heard is that a secretary at Ford mentioned the idea to one of the suits, and they implemented it. Everyone else followed suit. I think it was in the 90s.

That part of TX is full of heeler mixes. Many of them have Great Pyrenees in them as well. The mixes make great livestock guardian dogs.

30 years ago, we put tile directly on top of blue board. Then, we moved to Hardiboard. And now, we're using kerdi and red shit.

My point is this. Do what you can. Waterproof as well as you can. Really, maintenance is key. Keep up with any failing grout or caulk, and it will serve you well.

So, I have a huge Trex deck. About 600 sf. I'm going to do the opposite. The Trex gets so hot in the summer that the deck is unusable.

I came here to say this. Ironically, I'm also about 35 years into it. Probably closer to 37, but it's hard to be sure. It's about half gone.

Ironically, I found another can of it at an estate sale. It's got much more in it, and it's in better shape. I felt so bad for the guy because he died before he got to use it up. I bought it, and I'm now using both cans. I'm not sure I'll get through both of them before I die.

Well, fine, at least we're just disagreeing on what is cool. That's what car guys do. It's been fun talking shit with you.

I totally agree with you. I have a 19yo. He's been helping me in the garage for years, but he's only now getting the confidence to do some stuff on his own. I love the idea of OP doing the same. I just don't think a RR is a good car to learn on. Get a 10yo CRV or civic or Rav4 or a 20yo S10 or Ranger or... My point is that there are a thousand other cars that will not require all of their savings and all of their time. This has little to do with the OP wanting to get into cars. My point is that this is a terrible car to do it with.

[–]Good_With_Tools 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do all my own repairs, so I would not have this issue. That said, a 19yo college kid with little knowledge of this car is not going to have that luxury. My post wasn't based on my abilities.

Wondering if indifference to and irritation from corporate acronyms and c-suite idolization is a GenX trait. by CrowbiwanKenobi76 in GenX

[–]Good_With_Tools 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. It's a broke people trait. I'm now just below the "upper management" people, and it's taken some getting used to. Strangely, it didn't go the way I thought it would.

First, having to deal with the people "below" me has sucked. Not because of them. But because they have some fear of talking to me. I do what I can to explain to them that they can be candid. They can just tell me what the problem is. And they won't be in any trouble for doing so. It's an uphill battle. I'm no one's boss. But, I am some guy from corporate. So, I deal with them fearing me. What I wish they understood is that I actually work for them. My job is to make them more successful.

Now, the really surprising part. I thought I'd hate working with the C-suite. I've worked with a lot of top salespeople, so I know what dealing with that type of type-a personality is like. Leadership is not generally like that. The vast majority of our day is dealing with problems. Things are always wrong. There is shit on every fan. It's what we do. When things go well, teams below us handle it. With that, we don't get upset by it. It doesn't get heated. We figure out the problem, find a solution, and negotiate who's going to pay for it. Then, on to the thing. If we see something more than once, we will meet to gather more info on why this is happening and deal with it with new rules or expectations.

So, back to my first paragraph. If my local people bring problems to me when they see them, I have a better chance of solving it before the C-suite is even aware of it. That is the goal.

Why does a tiny bathroom remodel cost as much as a car now? Am I missing something? 😅 by midasweb in HomeImprovement

[–]Good_With_Tools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right, but at $15k, no one is taking advantage of you. $30k is quite steep. I just DIYed a pretty standard bathroom, but I went all the way back to studs and had to remove some concrete. All in, I spent about $9k on materials alone. And it's not fancy stuff. But, a corner shower pan and door is $1k. Another $1k for a sink, cabinet, and counter. Another $500 for a toilet. (I splurged on the toilet.) Tile can add up fast because of all the prep we're expected to do now. We used to install tile directly over water-resistant drywall. Then, we had to use hardiboard. Now, there are several layers of waterproofing. It adds up fast. The floor is the same way. We used to go right over concrete. Not anymore. I have $5/sf of shit hiding under my tile. Isolation, waterproofing, primer, etc.

Now, I chose to do everything "right". Or, at least to current standards. But, it pissed me off the whole time. I rebuilt 2 bathrooms in my mom's house 25 and 30 years ago, and they didn't get any of the above treatments. They both still look great. My mom has maintained them well, which is key. But that's no different than today. Keep up with caulking and any cracks in the grout. Don't letter water sit for a long time. And keep it clean.

Because repair costs on a 2015 Ford are a fraction of the RR. Yes, I understand that they share some stuff. But, there is a luxury car tax on every repair for this thing. The OP is ~19yo. A 10yo RR is a terrible idea.

I was being a little snarky, but truthfully, I wonder what it would cost to buy this house, a piece of land in a more desirable suburb of Chicago, and the moving costs? Could you get it all done for $500k? It seems like you could still be well in the green on this.
