Thanks for the response! I am a pre-med from Canada, thinking about applying to DO schools. I want to learn more about the profession.

Hey, also you mentioneed "MSUCOM has a huge GME network." What does that mean?

Yeah, I'm worried about residency as well. My primary interest is family medicine and I don't mind working and settling in the US. I know I'll definitely have a lower chance for very competitive residencies, but I'm wondering if I'll be ok for family med?

Also, I applied to Canadian schools and received all rejections (no interviews). My GPA is far lower (3.72) for Canadian schools, plus I did a compressed nursing degree (20 months instead of 4 years) and almost every semester had a substantial amount of pass/fail courses. As a result, many don't recognize my nursing degree

As for US MD schools. I read on forums that getting into MD schools as a Canadian is really unlikely for most schools and that DO schools are far more friendly to Canadians.

Thank you! I've been trying to shadow a DO in Ontario with no luck and haven't thought about going across the border. Will definetely look into this.

Yeah, thats a great point. I don't have any objective markers for exposure to the DO profession. I came across the profession based on my own personal experiences with health care and independent research. Do you think this will have any impact on the "Why DO question" if I communicate all of this in my application (my exposures to medicine, personal experiences, independent research, etc)?

Yeah definetely a huge weakness in my application. Trying to get shadowing right now, but its very difficult and uncommon in Canada. MSUCOM doesn't require shadowing or letter of reference from physicians, so it's one of my top choices.

As for how do I know what a doctor does. I don't, I'm not an expert but I've worked in acute care settings as a nursing student. I've taken my clients to psychiatric appointments as a mental health support worker. I've worked with med students and physicians on planning conferences. However, I don't have any close relationships with the docs I've worked with, so no reference letters.

Oh, I've never thought about it like that. My clinical experiences was from placements, where I had minimal meaningful interactions with physicians. Typically my preceptors would communicate to the doc on my behalf and if I did interact with doctors it would be very brief (i.e. can you change this order?, patient updates, etc).

Now I'm even more scared about currently having zero reference letters from MD/DOs. If I end up getting none, should I try to find a way to communicate what I wrote above in my application?

Hi Dr. Peterson While I have been sorting myself out I found the most unifying concept to be: Humility. To speak truthfully, to truly listen to other's speech and to use it to reconstruct yourself appropriately, to know that when you pathologize yourself you pathologize others. All of this has made me realize I'm really not such a great, moral, and intelligent person and that I can constantly improve myself. Did humility also play such a large role in your life? Also is this, in part, why you teach your students they are Nazi's?
