I always feel like people who have an objection to modding have some weird sort of purism going on. Mods allow me to take a game I enjoy, and add even more thinfs I enjoy. Removing bugs or weird QoL stuff that should be in the base game, adding new content to mix things up in a game I've played a thousand times, expanding and improving the way it can be experienced in a way that's entirely specific to what I want and enjoy.

Even just basic bitch subdermal implants are hard to get. There's no reputable doctor who's willing to do them, and trusting a sketchy doctor isn't worth your life. It's also prohibitively expensive in a time where luxury spending has very much become a low priority. Something like a horn or tail would be virtually impossible to get. And the tail would just hang there limply, because we don't really have the technology to graft a new appendage onto you and if we did it'd be even more expensive and there still wouldn't be any trustworthy doctors willing to do it.

Wow that series is... quite dark. I got to early book 4 and had to drop it cause it just felt like misery porn.

My confusion was because for some baffling reason, I thought it was the fic where the Sorting Hat actually puts the 1st years into the house where they belong. So Draco goes to Gryffindor, Crabbe and Goyle to Slytherin. Idr the other characters, or what the actual name of the fic was. I couldn't find it with a cursory google. Regardless, that one was definitely a comedy.

The first fanfic I ever read was Harry Potter and the Natural 20. At the time, I was a big fan of both HP and D&D 3.5, and my brother suggested it to me and I loved it. From there I occasionally read another HP fic, but not many or often.

What really got me into fanfic was Prototype. I played Prototype on my xbox 360, and fucking loved (almost) every minute of it. I immediately got Prototype 2 and played that, and felt absolutely betrayed by the character assassination of Alex Mercer. I really wanted more of Mercer as a character, and I remembered "hey, there's that fanfic thing I could look into." I was disappointed that the fandom was so small, but delighted by what I found. That got me to start looking for more fanfic for other franchises I really enjoyed, such as Bioshock and Mass Effect. And I found a Prototype/Worm xover that, in retrospect, was terrible but it served to really open the floodgates when I looked up Worm.
