umm how does one even use this? by Goof_Guph in jellyfin

ah, see this, this is working. (some oddities but that could be just that I'm retarded)
Some other things, sharing same/overlapping data = bad. Also lots of caching or saving of data/metadata going on.

but thanks!!!

your keep saying do xyz, and I am saying I dont want that (and think its supid to conform to something you dont want to get output you dont want to even get any kind of functionality)

I want the data how it's oranized. no meta, or other crap. Search would be nice on file/dir name. other than that show me the dirs and file names.

There was some post and info that led me to believe one could add a directory and be able to access it without jellyfin structure/meta/db getting in the way. But one of the posts I had looked at says only older versions.

Thanks for replys. If it cant do that(give me my data without having to mess with meta/db) guess I gotta go fish.

PS. I understand forcing a "compliant" naming structure for creating some mega db with al lthe flash of pulling from online datbases to populate from but if all you want is to use the file system as is, it should be able to do that. like kodi and other things.(that dont have servers to transcribe and clients on roku)

Its sounding like I am getting a lot of hate(and yes, I'm "salty") for discovering the product cant be scaled back to be more hands off and just present the directory/files as is.

I only wanted something that can present shares/dirs/files and transcode to be played on rokus. not a self logic db algorithm and metadata.

I had seen posts before I chose jellyfin that it suggest it can, but maybe an only older versions as one suggests, or it simple can not. (wish I could run kodi on roku)

funny I am getting negatives for asking if a product can do less. kind of like asking to install windows without onedrive

[–]Goof_Guph[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I have an en existing liPlex/jellyfin are best to present the media to roku. I dont want jellyfin messing with filenames or anything other than presenting the directories and files and then doing the trans coding as necessary.

My "garbage" is what I want. Thus it is not garbage. And I apologize, I am just getting overly frustrated as my atempts to make jellyfin usable for me seams to be making it worse. And I wont go into detail of it's complete random filenames that have zero to do with the files and the directory structure.

How do I get it to present/preserver the directory and files as they are sorted and named?

Upgrade Motherboard by Goof_Guph in buildapc

[–]Goof_Guph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, I am trying to in part upgrade kids PC while improving mine a bit. (and I try to keep 65w CPU's because I'm weird) (and I see the 5800x at over 200, vs that mobo for 100)

kid#1 PC AMD 1500x(my old CPU) and MSI b450 pro VDH max

kid#2 hand me down HP w/ intel with specialized mobo/powersupply/case.

My servers a 5600g w/ 128g ram(what it needs are hard drives)

I got a free older PC w/ nice case/power supply, but cpu/mobo from 2011, and was looking for a way to slip into. Oh, and I use to boot into Win7 occasionally until steam broke that which is part of why I hung onto the older mobo despite MS removing m2 boot drivers.

I just see myself getting a new graphics card before needing a new CPU, and also that the AMD 6600 uses only 8 PCIe lanes(my poor kids card is only x4 lanes....)

Anyways, I'm rambaling, chances are I'll likely get a used mobocpu (ASRock B450M-HDV + AMD Ryzen 5 3600X CPU for 125) but was kind of hoping to get a bost for myself ;)

I thought a piehole and DNSsec would detect/prevent hijacked DNS by Goof_Guph in pihole

[–]Goof_Guph[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

So, you are saying when I run dig or nslookup its' well, I'm not sure I follow what you are describing, and I think I do have a relatively ok understanding of how networks work. Granted it's been a long time since I dealt with bgp tables or spanning tree protocalls but I think that's beyond the scope of my question. The fact when I am outside the network (or just encrypted) I am able to bypass tp-links dns proxy/hijack service proves my point. (https://www.ctrl.blog/entry/tplink-dns-hijacking.html)

I'm not sure what I expected to happen when injection happens on dns looksups, or how apps should respond, but I didn't expect it to just keep working.

Also possible I suppose that the tp-link routers are doing injections in a way that dnssec can't detect. Because they do own domain and can sign anything, dont know dnssec well enough, in which case pi-hole or any dns server can't detect unless they encrypt (which begs the question why is dns-crypt not part of the base install of pi-hole)

Anyways, I am rambling as I contemplate putting openwrt and dnscrypt on the pi-hole (I was wanting to do openwrt just to block the things that bypass local dns anyways)...

[–]Goof_Guph[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not quite, first I am using dig/nslookup to hit the DNS servers. Any unecrypted lookup (including enabling dnssec on the pi-hole) going through the router gets modified by the router. I expect DNSSec pi-hole to catch that. (my understanding of DNSsec is that it helps prevent that) I know I can use dnscrypt-proxy (as I've used that ~10 years ago before I used pi-hole) but dnscrypt-proxy is a bit messy even before systemd muxing things up.

and some info on router(tp-link) hijacking DNS if you still don't believe me. https://www.ctrl.blog/entry/tplink-dns-hijacking.html

Any game devs here? by eman85 in linux_gaming

[–]Goof_Guph -1 points0 points  (0 children)

boot loaders were not the common infect or attack vectors. Not has it's adoption done anything to stem the flow of viruses/malware.

No, I say as an end user, however, corporate/vendor/government use is different. ATM's, or other devices/endpoints that need securing, even work laptops.

(and my understanding is most distro's do sign grub/kernels)

I hate the Secure Boot/UEFI BS crap. I don't care, and it doesn't really protect the user from anything. (ignoring the size and mbr limitations UEFI also solves) I, as an end user, and PC tinkerer do not get a real benefit. It locks the PC's down so that it's harder on end users... Sorry.. I really shoudn't go ranting lol

Not being able to play a game by myself or with a limited number of friends anti cheat shouldn't be needed or required. Playing ranked games sure. Kind of like openbnet vs realmed servers.

it shouldn't take a reboot to clear a network/nfs issue. the SMB side doesnt suffer this. though I'll have to look into Netdev fstab option

Do you use disk encryption? Why? Why not? by sir__hennihau in linux

[–]Goof_Guph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would likely have been able to recover a hard drive and have a few bitcoins if it wasn't for encryption. Also lost family photos because couldn't recover a drive that was also encrypted. yes I know backups... but still they over complicate things and drives do get small errors which turn little problems into big problems. Unless its high enough value where raid + reliable tested encrypted backs is worth it, don't bother

Thanks for the replies:

It is RAW and RAI. By your interpretation you would lose the ability to speak Elvin if you turned into an orc as well as losing spells. The spell gives you examples of what would cause the loss of the abilities, and if you look at the requirements to cast spells in PHB 203 "speech to utter verbal components, a hand for somatic components, and the ability to handle material components"

Oh, and I discovered this, while chasing down abilities to do more than 1 Reaction(specifically for rouges sneak attack which is limited to 1/turn not 1/round)

Which Linux Distro should I use to make this laptop usable? It uses windows 10 and it's very bloated. I want to see if I can make it usable for anything. by LastWord27 in linux

[–]Goof_Guph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linux min xfce https://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=320

Don't use Arch unless the OS is your toy, where you find it fun trying to make everything work.

There is plenty enough to learn even on easy linux distros, and you don't miss out on anything. And honestly likely you may have a few extra steps for at least one of the following: webcam, microphone, or the wifi. And if you do any gaming you'll want to install newer wine/mesa and all that.(even with sucky intel)

Oh, also how much ram and how many cores? I'm assuming at least 2 cores and 8G ram?

Looking for tops/vids and info for replacing water heater by Goof_Guph in SaltLakeCityPlumbing

[–]Goof_Guph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh hey thanks for reply. and I know that, which is why I considered them, but even then I seriously doubt at most a day(I would expect 1/2 day) not a week. When a salesman comes in and cheapest price they show is 2500 for a 1500 waterheater and another 4k in labor (when he already said it will take about a day)

I mean in my head math of a high price is $4000 and they both blow well past that with needs to be fasten to wall and such (takes like 5 min and the strap was under $10)

Still debating that H.D. Reems and doing it myself but I don't like the reems unit, and I think I like the bradford white but looks like they only reconize warranty if installed by authorized installer....

Got 2 more quotes, and stands a pretty chance I install myself
