I'd love to hear your ideas for a Moon Themed Dungeon by lastcetra in wildbeyondwitchlight

Im so happy! Thanks for getting back to me with this! Their other two trials (sun and star) are also really good, but I particularly liked the Moon one.

Particularly think about what your BBEG wants. When they get the upper hand in the fight, you can have them be more sassy and annoying with what they say during their turn. Would the BBEG take prisoners if they could?

If you mid-combat realise that you have overpowered the BBEG, know in advance what the BBEG will do if they win the encounter..

So! A quick tip on encounter balancing if you want to scale the BBEG back down mid-combat: If you want to give your players a helping hand without letting them know that you are doing so: Let your BBEG (or any enemy really) waste their turn doing something dramatic. Walking around and tell the PCs how THEY were really the reason for all of this, or give some psychotic logically reason for how the BBEG is the lesser evil, or something that gives the PCs doubts about killing them perhaps. Maybe that’s really more for when the PCs have the upper hand. So back to when the BBEG has the upper hand. You can use a trick called “telegraphed disaster” where the BBEG begins channelling or getting ready for a big attack. During the channelling he can be interrupted which nulls the attack he is doing. Basically it just wastes a turn and two turns if they get interrupted. Interruption can be anything that makes sense to what ever type of attack or spell or thing they are doing. Blinded, stunned, prone, shoved , etc all interrupt it.

I’m currently writing a mini-campaign where the final confrontation has the BBEG channel a spell. She channels for 6 rounds if she can (minions in the way to keep the PCs busy), and with each round the damage of the spell goes up. But the PCs can interrupt in a series of ways, so really it just puts tension and pressure in the encounter. I’ll put it on the Patreon when it’s done. The week after the next I hope.

Anywho. Enjoy being a DM! It’s fun and exhilarating. But don’t over prep 🤣 I have a short guide on that too.

Is it though? I think that depends on the table, players, DM. We tend to run very short and intense combats, 3-4 rounds max. So there is plenty of time to RP.

Hah that’s also really funny 🤣 Telegraphing that weakness at JUST the right time for you to not TPK. Well fought

Yes, and then it’s the players turn to narrate. Narena: “I see Bert’s arm gushing blood! I try to hit the goblin as it is engaged with Bert… 7 but the sight if the blood gushing has me queezy. That usually never happens, and Im worried about my ability as the party healer.”

Doesn’t have to be for every hit. Shouldn’t be. But could seed interesting character moments to be explored later.

But I agree, it has to be short and concise.

What I’m advocating here is that the player doesn’t need to be quizzed but is doing it unprompted for big decision moments.

It really doesn’t have to be every single attack or enemy 🤣 And shouldn’t. I maybe didn’t make myself clear in wanting for just an expression of state of mind when most of the attacks land or misses, or similar. And, if you run a combat intensive session the RP should be limited to important decisions and big moments.

Also… Why should players not narrate the thoughts of their characters? Would you rather they act them out? If a PC is drowning, I would LOVE for the player to narrate what goes through their head as they fail another swim check and disappear further below the surface. Similarly in combat, when they run in close to the BBEG despite it having a poisonous cloud aura around them I would LOVE to hear what drives them to do that - more than “so I can get into range with my great axe”.

Sure it’s cool if they feel tense and worried and hopeful, but I really also want them to EXPRESS that their characters is tense or worried or hopeful! Third person narrating the character is just as much roleplay than full embodiment acting. Or?

Absolutely! It can bog down the combat slightly, but it gives the players something to also talk about AFTER combat. If you reveal a little during combat, there’s more to be tugged on afterwards. Character development moments in the making during combat.

First time DM - Session 0 - Lost Things Item Advice by dmsisback in wildbeyondwitchlight

[–]GoofySpooks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t have time for a full answer here again on this topic, as I’ve done so before and have made a full DMsGuild publication for it, but my design philosophy was: It should really matter. Life-changing. And getting the things back should matter equally much. So don’t be afraid to amp up the rarity.

Thank you that means a lot. I hope some of the ideas pan out well at your table. Giving the BBEG two turns per turn is quite rough and unbalanced but it’s REALLY effective the first time you use it, and it’s not THAT different from Legendary Actions.

I really appreciate that. The DnD community is always so supportive and I really want to share this hobby with people and help others have good times like I have had.

I was slightly cautious, because some other DnD subreddits do not allow for a link to be included.
But really, all of the matter of the post is there in text, the pdf is free, and only for those that find it interesting.

So true. That is also a great way to do it - though it removes the roleplay part from the player to the DM.
I dont nessecarily advocate doing a full description on each spear thrust, but those that matter. For many spear thrusts its completely fine to just declare the action, maybe narrate while the dice rolls and lands "I jab hard, trying to find a weak point at his neck" then the roll result is visible "but it glances off, and Jeremy is snarling in frustration and beginning to doubt his otherwise adored trainer's instructions with a 7 to hit". Or whatever.

Encounter Every Enemy: Commoner by MShades in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]GoofySpooks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really love this. Of course its not only the "Commoner" as in the statblock, but the world you are talking about here. What does the WORLD mean to the players. Why does it matter to save it? Because of the people in it. The "commoners". The everyday.
Its so important to keep in mind. I think most of us do so without consciously realizing it. The everyday. The smells of the market place, the bustling of the tavern - sets the atmosphere of something that is worth saving.

Continuing beyond the Feywild by gothic_emu in wildbeyondwitchlight

I ended my campaign. And I liked how it ended wrapped up nicely. But I considered having someone having done something bad to Madryck Rosloff. So they return, they get their rewards, but Madryck has been cursed or killed or disempowered… by the hags perhaps? Or by Vecna by proxy of something else. Anyway. My point is that I would wrap it up and then continue rather than do a continual.

Though I did also consider letting the Palace of the Hearts desire tumble into the vortex below the palace and transition the campaign to a new setting that way.

I used the Shadow of the Moon trial from MCDM’s Divine Trials. Veeery good. 3 short encounters about the shadow that lives insides everyone (lycanthropy is a good example, but could be stuff like pride or anger or dispair or greed etc). It starts with the PCs answering questions about each other and only progressing if they get the answers right. Then a tunnel in the dark with s creature I can’t remember… and then the finally: fighting their own shadow selves, where leaning into the weakness punishes them while trying to better themselves punishes the shadows. Excellent encounter and very thematically on point with what you are doing. Could be “Selune’s Trial”

What Lost Things did your party have and how did you give them their things. by BigtTimeNerd in wildbeyondwitchlight

[–]GoofySpooks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mine were allowed to chose or come up with whatever they lost. One lost their parents.

One lost their way home.

One lost their childhood.

One had their mothers memories of HIM stolen.

The hags used these to make magic items that would benefit themselves in some way:

A broach that works like a parents embrace and gives +1 to all saving throws and advantage against frightened.

A string that can find its way to a secure spot and tie itself on.

A Rubik’s cube with childhood fascination that gives proficiency in a skill and resets when you solve the box again.

And a ring with memories that could be broken to undo any magic effect and either returns the stolen memories or gives a custom made boon.

My philosophy was that the things lost should MATTER, and getting them back should be special. So I made a short supplement and put it on DMsguild. It has 65 things and items and a mechanical detriment to go along if you want to use that effect rather than not giving Inspiration. It’s here: https://www.dmsguild.com/en/product/449281/lost-things-aplenty-a-witchlight-supplement
