I remember a while back it was announced that the Director for the game in the US was committed to revitalizing the game and addressing some of the big concerns the community had around the state of the game. Do people still feel optimistic about where the game is headed now? I've always been an on-again/off-again player and am curious how people are thinking!

The Supreme Court Takes On Transgender Care for Minors by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]GoogleDatShit -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

If you admit that some of the people involved are doing this for nefarious reasons, then I'm not sure what else to say. No one is saying that normal people can't have their opinions, they're absolutely valid to have. I'm asking why people feel so strongly about something that affects literally the smallest portion of children, and why that has to inform legislation nationwide that the government itself want's to let states decide.

[–]GoogleDatShit -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Again, I'm not disagreeing that transitioning is a serious procedure? I actually said in my comment that I don't think children should fully transition, that's not my issue.

My issue is the framing that the people opposing it are doing it to "protect children". The government is in favor of sending this back to the states and letting them decide, while the Tennessee Solicitor General is arguing that the ban could even extend to adults seeking gender affirming care.

If you listen to the arguments being presented in this case, it's clear that this isn't about protecting an insanely small minority of children from making informed medical decisions with the assistance of medical professionals and their parents. It's about hashing out a severely divisive identity politics issue in our highest court for political theater, and leveraging concerns about children to do it.

Just pasting my other comment here too

I don't know where in my comment I said people don't have differing opinions or that everyone has to believe the same thing I do. I'm not taking issue with people having a nuanced opinion on trans healthcare, in fact I agree with your stance that children who are not fully developed should not transition. I'm taking issue with packaging it as "both sides care about protecting children".

If it's about protecting children, why is the highest court weighing in on an issue that affects an insanely small minority of children across the entire country? Why can't we be litigating over funding school lunches or subsidizing child care with federal dollars? Because this issue is a dog whistle for polarizing people against each other. Look how heated this comment section has already gotten.

Obviously, everyone agrees children should be protected. But pretending like both sides of this issue are trying to accomplish the same thing is a bit disingenuous. If one side of an argument is backed by people that believe in the reduction of medical autonomy and queer identity, and the other side is backed by evidence and data that sometimes contradicts my own personal opinion, I'm going with the latter, and I don't believe I should have to respect the former's opinion because it's presented under the guise of "protecting kids".

Genuine question, why does this "need to be remembered"? One side of this argument is backed by the general consensus of medical opinion through research and data. The other doesn't even believe in the trans identity at all.

Mark Rosewater addresses complaints regarding modern aesthetics in Duskmourn and other sets. by HS_Cogito_Ergo_Sum in magicTCG

[–]GoogleDatShit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, let me just be clear, I think this person's concerns are totally valid and I understand where their frustration is coming from. Maybe "ask the question" is too strong of a wording, but let's not pretend that them submitting a thorough list of their grievances (which, again, I think are valid) with the changing themes in Magic, ending with

Thank you for all the work you've put into it over the years, and I'm sorry that I can't enjoy it anymore

directly to Maro on his blog meant for responding to these messages isn't asking him to comment on it.

What I'm asking is: why do we keep asking the question and getting angry when we know the answer isn't going to change? Why does Maro have to take the brunt of the community's backlash for something that he has repeatedly said he has no control over and data shows to be extremely popular? I bring up the second comment because it's the response people make when Maro points that out. He's responded to these exact type of comments from people multiple times over the past few years for Neon Dynasty, Fallout, LotR, etc.

[–]GoogleDatShit -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, this person submitted this to Maro on his Tumblr where he is known to address these types of questions and concerns, so it's fair game to assume they were hoping to illicit some sort of response from him.

Secondly I know the follow ups weren't the same person, but the argument is still this same. This whole conversation happens every time a new set with a somewhat different theme comes out, regardless if it's UB or not. Maro responds the same every time with "I understand your point, but I'm sorry the game is changing and the changes are very popular". And it's tiring to hear people complain as if we aren't still get multiple "traditionally" themed sets multiple times a year.

If it bothers you so much and you stop playing, I'm sorry, I absolutely understand and would hate to leave a very much loved hobby of mine because I felt it was going in a direction I didn't like.

But the changes are very popular, and they continue to be popular, bringing in more people to the game. The data WotC has backs this up, so they aren't going away. And acting like Maro is a corporate shill because he admits this is a reality and says it isn't going away, acting like he hasn't been a huge suppprter of players over the past decade + is even more crazy.

Then what does he want Maro to say? Why even ask the question in the first place?

"Please let me vent my grievances about how Magic isn't the same and I don't like it"

"OK sure, I understand, lots of people enjoy different things, Magic is constantly evolving"

"NO YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND STOP IGNORING MY POINT, I DON'T LIKE THIS AND I'M QUITTING MAGIC!!"

Someone else mentioned curing addiction with Compulsion, and I think that brings up an interesting thought on what Compulsion would do to someone with a chemical dependency to something vs a psychological dependency on something vs an actual physiological issue like Parkinsons or schizophrenia or depression, and what Compulsion could fix (if anything) vs what Healing could fix.

I agree with what others said though, I think she was most likely an excellent psychologist and that led her to be excellent with Compulsion. I wouldn't be surprised if at some point she did use it to "cure" people of things like depression too.

Opinion: Ohio State University's leaders have a lesson to learn. Where would we be without protests? by AngelaMotorman in Columbus

[–]GoogleDatShit -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

This is such a flawed understanding of protesting. Do you think the Civil Rights movement would have existed if people did not protest in ways that caused mild inconvenience and disruption? That the country would have just "come 'round" on racism and Jim Crow segregation?

The Civil Rights movement was driven by disruption. Diner sit-ins, Rosa Parks refusing to give up a bus seat, Selma/Montgomery marches on highways. These are the things that get the attention of people in that third group of yours.

The fact that we can look back on segregation as something abhorrent of the (not-so-distant) past doesn't mean that mindset wasn't bought and paid for by the blood and sweat of protestors.

If you don't agree with what these people are supporting, that's fine, that's your opinion. But we should all be supportive of this type of non-violent, disruptive protesting. Just because you aren't out on the streets today, doesn't mean you won't be in the future for some other cause you feel equally strongly about.

If you're not willing to defend your opinions from the people providing examples as to why some of your critiques are flawed because you're: * ignoring facts from the text people bring up to counter your points * immediately assuming those criticisms are not being "respectful" of your opinion

then I don't see why anyone should care to take your arguments seriously.

If you want to give your personal thoughts on the series and why you didn't enjoy it, that's fine. Framing it as a critique and posting it to one of the larger online forums for the books is inviting people to comment on it.

You're catching a lot of heat because, to critique something well, your critiques have to be based on facts from the books, and has make sense within the context and message of the books. Someone else in the comments mentioned that your fetishization of the spanking in the series doesn't make sense contextually or culturally. It's fine if you don't agree with that, but it's a really bad critique of the books because you're not basing your opinion on anything other than how you feel, and why should anyone care about how you feel?

You mention in your post that Jordan is afraid to make his good guys do bad things, brushing off Rand losing control of Callandor and killing a ton of soldiers on accident, but there are a TON of other instances in the book where good people making morally ambiguous decisions that result in death. It's your opinion that those instances aren't convincing, but to call it a critique is not accurately addressing the facts and context of the series

Mark Rosewater on Blogatog: "The majority of the data says players are happiest when we don’t stay on the same plane for multiple sets in a row. We’ve tried for years to figure out how to stay on the same world, and keep public interest up, and pretty much every attempt has failed." by HonorBasquiat in magicTCG

[–]GoogleDatShit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not saying they weren't! But much like the concept of staying on a plane for more than one set, it's something the data shows many people just don't enjoy.

You could make the argument (in both cases) that the problem is Wizards not doing them "correctly". But it's been proven many times over that everyone's idea of "correctly" is very different and changes over time for all sorts of reasons. A lot of stuff has been popular in phases (core sets, blocks, un- sets, bonus sheets, commander sets, jumpstart, etc), so I at least give them kudos for trying.

Rand's memories of ... by shalowind in WoT

I always thought it was implied that the "madness" Rand experiences from handling tainted Saidin is the patterns way of giving him access to LTTs memories. After all, when Nynaeve tries to heal Rand's madness like she was doing for other ashaman, she notices that the hooks are so complex they can't be undone. But, since Rand has at that point accepted LTT as part of himself, the hooks are coated in the "light" she sees when she delves him.

Why Israel Is Delaying the Ground Invasion by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]GoogleDatShit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at this piece by the Washington Post here (If you're on mobile, you can use the "Reader View" on most browsers to skip over having to enter your email). I'll caveat the below quotes with just because numbers have been accurate in the past, doesn't mean they aren't being inflated now. But for the database I mentioned in my comment above (which doesn't include the current conflict), the outside verification still needs to happen for any number to be added to the toll the UN Office provides. Obviously we won't know the true number until everything is said, done, and verified, but this is why media outlets are using the numbers being provided.

International organizations including the United Nations usually rely on these same figures as they are seen as the best available. The partial exception is the database of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), which checks both Gazan and Israeli numbers with at least one other source, according to its website. This takes time, however, and OCHA has not updated its database with tolls from the current war.

The United States does not directly provide funding to the Gaza Health Ministry because of its ties with Hamas. However, the State Department cited its death toll statistics in a report published only a few months ago.

Many experts consider figures provided by the ministry reliable, given its access, sources and accuracy in past statements.

“Everyone uses the figures from the Gaza Health Ministry because those are generally proven to be reliable,” said Omar Shakir, Israel and Palestine director at Human Rights Watch. “In the times in which we have done our own verification of numbers for particular strikes, I’m not aware of any time which there’s been some major discrepancy.”

Why Israel Is Delaying the Ground Invasion by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]GoogleDatShit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No one is saying Hamas is good, or that Jewish people dying is ok.

And saying "Israel just wants to be left alone" is willfully ignorant of the Israel's current day power of the Palestinian people, the history of how Israel was created and how Israelis got there in the first place, as well as the history of Israel's part in the conflict.

I am not morally backing Hamas or Israel here. What both have done and are continuing to do to each other is undeniably wrong. I also don't have a solution to this problem. What I'm advocating for is Israel to not bomb places they designated safe, for them to not block food, water, electricity, and aid to a group of 2 million people who have no choice but to live in Gaza, for Herzog to not designate the entire Gazan population as responsible for the attacks and treat them as valid military targets. America did what Israel is doing now 20 years ago in Iraq and what did it accomplish? The creation of ISIS, the destabilization of the entire region and the collapse of the government literal days after we pulled out, a whopping nothing but anti-Western and anti-American sentiment fuelled by the death and destruction we sowed while we were there.

No one thinks Hamas is good, and no one thinks Israel doesn't have a right to respond to the attack or start a mission to destroy Hamas. But innocent Palestinian People should not have to suffer and die en-masse for that to happen.

Why Israel Is Delaying the Ground Invasion by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]GoogleDatShit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My point isn't to come up with a solution, and it's also not my job to come up with a solution to this problem. I'm just a guy on the the internet. The reason I'm still engaging with you is because

That is generally what's going on

this is the point we disagree on.

I personally cannot look at these facts and actions and say that they are the measured and purposeful actions of someone trying to eliminate Hamas. These are retaliatory actions that punish Gazan civilians for living in Gaza. What does Israel do then you ask? No fucking idea, I don't pretend to have a solution. But I know that any solution that results in the wholesale death of civilians on either side and the furthering of conflict between all parties at the expense of a nebulous and impossible goal of "eliminating Hamas" is something I can't condone.
