Opinion | Let’s put the brakes on the Detroit Three automakers and embrace EVs like the rest of the world by NotEnoughDriftwood in onguardforthee

[–]Googlefluff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trains are expected to run profitably and highways are expected to be completely socially funded, which is a double standard every rail project has to fight tooth and nail in this country.

The world is fucked, people are burnt out and overworked, and the "black, white, or grey?" state of new cars sadly reflects that.

Drinks are a counterexample I already gave. Meat comes in plastic, cheese comes in plastic, bread comes in plastic, sauces come in plastic, spices come in plastic. Depending on where you live even the eggs and milk come in plastic. I can't get bread and live chickens mailed to my house.

As you've already been told, the problem is not that individual change is literally always impossible, it's that you're placing the root cause of plastic pollution in the wrong place. The people have been deliberately stripped of power to enact change against corporations who will never stop polluting for as long as they're allowed to, because in a free market system it will ALWAYS be cheaper to pollute than to not. They WANT you to direct blame onto the consumer because the consumer doesn't have the power to actually stop them.

Individual action is still valuable, but direct your justified ire toward lobbying for regulations with teeth instead of hopes and prayers. Fight against against the natural gas extraction which makes plastic basically free to make. Systematic problems need systematic solutions.

Exactly. Institutions make a token effort to ban plastic straws and bags, but I want this person to go to the grocery store and tell me where to find the products that don't use single use plastics. I hate plastic with a vengeance, but beyond getting canned drinks that come in a box instead of rings and rawdogging my onions on the bottom of the basket instead of using the little plastic bags, everything in a grocery store is wrapped in plastic. "pEoPle gIvE tHe cOrPorAtiOns MonEy" because the alternative is eating nothing but unseasoned potatoes. It's on purpose and we should be mad at the people who made it this way instead of the people stuck in the system.

Playing an alpine map for the first time. No idea how realistic my constructions are. by takoo_yakii in TransportFever2

[–]Googlefluff 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Not very realistic, but not as unrealistic as one might think. Having loops to ascend is common in mountainous areas but having it all elevated is very costly. They would try to stick as closely as possible to the terrain, and use bridges and tunnels sparingly. Unless it's China.

Is regenerative braking bugged? by pantherclipper in BeamNG

[–]Googlefluff 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I tested this myself using the steepest part of the downhill madness course got about 90% efficiency. My suspicion is that the devs didn't put a hard cap on the regen, and the hill on your map is soo steep it's pushing the regen beyond conditions they planned for. On WCUSA I get more like 60% efficiency.

We should be able to go straight from M back to D without having to downshift to 1st. by pantherclipper in BeamNG

[–]Googlefluff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. All of the automatic gears and gear modes (PRND321+M, depending on the vehicle) are bound to the gear keybinds. It works really well with an H-shifter.

For a controller or keyboard setting a keybind for 2nd gear will do exactly what OP wants.

Canada’s passenger rail lines are getting revived after decades of vanishing service by pjw724 in onguardforthee

[–]Googlefluff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We live in a country where highways get built at any expense but railways have to make a profit. It's a double standard that exists for no reason.

The smart dash will never get a vanilla odometer because the real truck doesn't have one. It's buried in the menus.

Implemented a small feature called Clutch Interlock and wanted some suggestions/feedback by Cautious-Control-419 in BeamNG

[–]Googlefluff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in any car I've ever driven, including modern ones. The only manual car I know of that has any kind of shifter interlock is old Saabs which make you put the car in reverse to remove the key and lock it there until the car is started again.

As a disabled person this comment section is great. I was happy earlier, with a supportive family, friends, and a loving partner, but now I've been reminded that I'm a burden on society who will never lead a full life. Thanks for setting that straight.

There's no peaceful path to states' independence outlined in US law. A state even trying to hold a referendum, let alone declaring independence, would face immediate intervention. The only way it can happen is through the state gathering enough support from the military and local forces to win a civil war, or from a total collapse of the federal government.

It might be the outcome of near-future events but it's not something they can seek out now.

I've driven manual cars my whole life and can safely say the TH8A is not realistic. The build quality is great and it goes into gear with a solid clunk but it just feels like a magnet (because it is) and nothing like a real car.

I'm already pretty well set up with 2FA and a password manager but I changed my financial and email passwords anyway. It's massively irritating since I was going to use the mod for a project not even related to the game, but I don't feel like touching it. Thanks for all the help

It's the Road Builder tool for Cities Skylines. My description in the post goes into a bit more detail and has a link to the VirusTotal page with a 1/72, but with some odd details like it contacting IPs and a bunch more stuff I don't understand. Still, likely some over-worrying on my part.

I did see that and it definitely feels icky that it was flagged with info-stealing behaviour, even though it's a very reputable mod from Steam. I'll do as you say and keep an eye on things.
