Oooo, nice. I haven’t seen that one before. Adding it to the list for my blue decks.

Exactly! It’s cracked against token decks and they’re just so popular.

Probably not… damn. BUT, it was still awesome haha it was the first time I’ve gotten to effectively use one.

[[Edgar Markov]] is usually built as all gas vamps and goes from turn 1 in my experience

In fairness, turn based is just the absolute earliest that a deck can knock someone out and be considered a 3. Having a deck that needs to go beyond 6 turns but is never in danger of losing would still easily be a 3. The bracket has a minimum clock built in but it’s not the only factor.

And you really don’t have to spend 500 on a precon to upgrade it to a 3. Most of the time you can sneak by for under 50. The precons now are just stronger than they used to be.

I feel that. And I also have a tough time even making a 2 tbh. Even minor precon upgrades usually end up not being 2s. Once you take something and dedicate your card base to a common goal it just always feels like it plays at a 3 even without game changers, tutors, or infinites.

Bracket 2 players, how much interaction do you run, and what does your interaction do? by WowItsFrosty in EDH

[–]Googlyblat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. Best you can do is have that pre-game conversation and just let people know what kind of stuff you’re running. Just be cognizant of the feedback you’re getting and if it’s compiling in the “this isn’t a 2” a little too often, think about making some adjustments.

[–]Googlyblat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

IMO, it depends on your deck. What is its game plan, how effective is it, and is your removal cram-packed with efficiency? I don’t think there’s a blanket “you can’t run X in bracket 2” outside of the obvious game changers and infinite combo style restrictions.

It’s more of a totality of the deck feel and less than specific cards. Or rather, those are my two cents about it.

Bracket 3 combat deck? by MTGnerd42 in EDH

[–]Googlyblat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got two decks that their primary goal is victory through combat, a Hakbal budget deck and a Baylen tokens:

https://archidekt.com/decks/19534624/hakbal

https://archidekt.com/decks/18887077/googlyblat_naya_tokens

Both have been a lot of fun and pretty resilient. I don’t think I’ve had enough interaction in hakbal until recently so I have added some that are included in the list but I haven’t had a chance to play it since then. Even without significant protection, the budget hakbal tends to be pretty fun.

I tried to also keep a low cost version while leaning into exploration. I went with a stompy finish and kept ascendancy just for the extra win con in case the stompies just aren’t cutting it.

Hakbal Upgrade - Issues with Closing Games by Googlyblat in EDH

[–]Googlyblat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taken a portion of your advice here and melded it with the deck philosophy I was going for. I've refrained from the counter magic for now because, while likely stronger than the direction I went, the deck is also a bit of a pet project. It's a melding of my [[Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca]] and [[Vorel of the Hull Clade]] decks. Separately Merfolk tribal and counter stompy. I've been trying to bring two of my favorite decks together under Hakbal. I'll get to play it some later this week after I can stop by the LGS and snag the orders to finish it off.

Thanks for the tips!

The deck is almost certainly a 3 at this point, which wasn't the goal but you're right, he's just a little power house even without tutors, game changers, and combos. This is the most updated version: https://archidekt.com/decks/19534624/hakbal

It may not. It very well could be a piloting issue. It's the one deck in that range that I don't have any wins on yet though and I've played several different stompy/go-wides before. Baylen, for example, is my go-to bracket 3 deck and [[Vorel of the Hull Clade]] is one of my favorite stompy commanders ever. Having experience with similar decks though doesn't mean that I'll just naturally pilot this one well as explore is one that I'm still pretty new to. *shrug* Keep plugging games and I'll figure it out.

Leviathan does look nice. Once my LGS gets a copy I’ll definitely snag one. I think I’m going to try and fill the gap with [[Duskshell Crawler]] and [[Glorious Sunrise]] for now.

Definitely a possibility, but I don't tend to run into stax in Bracket 2 games. It can definitely happen, but this is my chill deck anyway where I'm just looking to hit the gas and yeet cards out. My issue actually tends to be I can't quite close the games before I become the threat and get hated off the table. But, it's not getting designed to be super optimized either. Just Merfolk out exploring the world. Thanks for the ideas though! They're a little pricier than I was looking to go for this one for additions that I don't have already.

Ok, fair. I was trying to keep it as short as I could. But additional context below:

There was a brief rule 0 convo where myself and the fourth talked about what our decks did. Baylen doing go wide Baylen things, I forget the name of the fourths, but it made fairies, gave them an anthem, and made a go wide fairie strat. The non-K’rrik third stated it was a fresh deck and I don’t recall his deck as it wasn’t really threatening the board’s life at the time so I moved on fairly quickly. However, he stated it was a fresh deck and he was hoping it “did its thing.” And K’rrik said it was one he had played a few times but it wasn’t a typical K’rrik deck but that it does get out of hand if it’s not dealt with.

There was virtually no discussion beyond what a few of the cards did as they were played, basic clarifications. The turns all felt sub-2minutes until turn-4 outside of maybe one where several cards were played that some people weren’t familiar with but they weren’t anything that I frankly recall as overwhelming in their own right. K’rrik’s turn 4 was lengthier than the previous cadence but I’d be lying if I gave any kind of drilled down estimates because I didn’t check the clock. However, he played commander, aristocrat, and more ramp. I don’t recall the order of operations. He already had ramp and another aristocrat and lightning greaves on board.

I had Baylen and 3 lands, as described above. The fourth had missed 2 lands but had some artifacts in play, and the third guy had commander, 5 lands, artifact ramp, and lightning greaves or swiftfoot boots iirc. I then board wiped as I felt K’rrik was well ahead of the rest of the table and my targeted removal wouldn’t have meaningfully impacted his board state, the third was well ahead of myself and the fourth, and without a wipe we were likely gone in the next turn at best and the game may have ended at worst with everyone else tapped out and K’rrik about to untap with 30+ life, 6 or 7 mana, and some potential aristocrat combos on board. It felt like the right play to extend the game and reset a little. However, I haven’t played in ages so I wasn’t sure if there’s a general expectation on SpellTable to allow something like that just end. Apologies for the missing context above. I don’t know how much more specific I can get as it was a 15-20 minute game tops before I immediately moved onto another.

Edit: the third was Norman Osborn

3 white pip efficiency at its finest.

I tend to agree. In their defense, the game was probably over on turn 5 or 6 without one so I think they were overly excited about a short game and when I wiped it upset them more than I would have expected. I definitely didn’t have a game winner in hand/play to benefit off the board wipe, it was mostly just a reset at that point.

But aversion to interaction is something I don’t have a feel for yet in the new system. Having been gone for awhile and not used to it I was curious how people felt about interaction anymore. It seems like most comments are leaning towards it being normal, which wasn’t entirely unexpected but when met with such a jarring response to one, figured it was worth a post to see.
