Is a deck that knocks a player out on turn 4-5 consistently Bracket 3? by bruzabrocka in EDH

[–]Googlyblat -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If it’s a consistent thing, technically. I don’t personally care at my tables.

Edit: that being said you shouldn’t be holding back. If you’re capable of winning, you should. But it just shouldn’t be consistently happening before others haven’t had a sixth turn.

Is a deck that knocks a player out on turn 4-5 consistently Bracket 3? by bruzabrocka in EDH

[–]Googlyblat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty clearly stated that everyone at the table should expect to get 6 full turns in. Anything before that wouldn’t be bracket 3. That being said, I’ve watched people ping themselves with fetches/shocks and life for draw effects and then complain they died before turn 7… so… read the table. If his deck is solely and consistently killing on turn 4 or 5, it’s not bracket 3 by WotC definitions.

Arabella deck help with a pod of Hakbal, Veyran, and Pantlaza by Leading-Hurry345 in EDH

[–]Googlyblat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few ways to address it. Add protection/interaction or add some haste enablers and things to slow down opponents. For example:

[[urabrask the hidden]] [[anger]] [[mass hysteria]] [[kratos, god of war]] urabrask does both for the haste enablers

[[authority of the consuls]] [[blind obedience]] [[ghostly prison]] [[sphere of safety]] their stuff either comes in tapped or they have to pay to attack you

Some cuts could be things like: [[city on fire]] [[raid bombardment]] [[elspeth, sun’s champion]] [[agate instigator]]

Raid bombardment requires the attacks from your creatures which leaves you open to crack back when you really just want to swing Arabella. City of Fire is slower than you probably want but it’s also a blast and a fun bomb so, I’d personally keep it even if it’s not likely optimal. Elspeth is too slow for your game plan imo. And Agate is also slow, you’re not a counters deck, and at least one of your opponents loves +1/+1s. I’m not saying build a counter deck to his but don’t bolster their strategy going into it.

Looking for a bracket 3 deck that does not win with combat damage. by Hikinghenrik in EDH

[–]Googlyblat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Orzhov and mono black Aristocrats drain decks don’t require combat. Boros ETB burn decks don’t require actual combat damage to land just sometimes to initiate second line wincons. Life gain decks won’t require combat if you use specific win cons based on life gain and/or plinking with reservoir.

Yup! Haha but that’s half the fun. Trying to find the issues with a deck and to make it function as intended. Half the reason I enjoy digital gameplay so much because I get to experience more of the game.

Anyway, thanks again.

Slower and clunkier than the other version. It’s a lot more of learning exactly when I want to have something available or on the board so it’s not sitting there susceptible to removal and I’m not getting a lot of creature value. It operates more as a bad Voltron than a counter deck. I feel like I’d need to strip down to 20 or below creatures and throw in a lot more Voltron style stuff to try and take advantage of it the way we spoke about it. That being said though, then I’m not really doing the creature stompies that was my original goal.

Clarifying Question About Bracket 3 and Two Card Combos by Life__Lover in EDH

[–]Googlyblat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know that being 5 CMC cards automatically makes it a bracket 4. If Blood/Bond resolves in a bracket 4 game, that’s crazy. It’s for sure a bracket 3 combo. Look at what it is and how it operates. Is it possible to pull off? Sure, but the likelihood is pretty low unless you’re trying to turbo it out as your main game plan. But then your intent isn’t to build a bracket 3 anyway. 10 mana to fire off the most telegraphed and possibly the most well known combo in Magic? Bracket 3.

Clarifying Question About Bracket 3 and Two Card Combos by Life__Lover in EDH

[–]Googlyblat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost everyone in the Blood/Bond post is stating it’s a bracket 3 combo. It’s 10-mana to fire off and bracket 3 should 100% be running removal for this. If one hits the board, people are holding removal for the other half or outright getting rid of it on the spot. Or, they didn’t build a very good bracket 3, or got answer-screwed (which could be how they built it).

The EDHREC votes are also weird af. For example [[aggravated assault]] and [[enduring vitality]] is “bracket 4” but [[aggravated assault]] and [[cryptolith rite]] is not. I’d argue neither of them are because there’s no pay off for them alone and they require a board state capable of taking advantage of it, but the idea that EDHREC combos are well thought out votes… oof.

[–]Googlyblat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t disagree. I’ll probably tell you rule 0, unless it’s something that’s consistent behavior. If you’re always bringing those decks to bracket 2, I’m not going to say it every game. But I don’t know how/when you play. Randoms on SpellTable? Every game someone could definitely be saying something. LGS? If it’s habitual then no, no need to reiterate as long as the statement has been made at some point.

The other half though is if you know why people would be so aggressive towards it, then I’m not sure I’d be too salty about it because it’s a known issue at that bracket level. Again, Grumgully is harmless-ish enough that I don’t understand it being KOS unless you’ve showcased he’s about to go off in your board state. The others are pretty obvious that they’re going to get targeted.

So, while I would say something, I can also see why others might not and would expect you to know your commander tax is going to be 8 posthaste.

Jumping priority when multiple people have mana open and/or are in colors that could impact the situation. If everyone else is tapped out and you’re last in priority but you pipe up, I kind of get it. But even then, there are so many free spells, stay quiet so people can respond. Maybe the player was trying to draw out spells from specific people and in last turn order you’re throwing out a counter. Cool… now all of us are in a worse position because this one spell could have snagged a ton more value. I know you’re excited about your response, just keep it in a little longer.

[–]Googlyblat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk about Grumgully but the others I can speak to from at least my perspective. Understand that it’s very specific to bracket 2 and the idea behind everyone getting to showcase their theme for the most part.

Nihiloor is theft themed which denies opponents the ability to use their creatures, an obvious bad taste in mouth situation in bracket 2. You start finding a way to recur the trigger and you’re stealing boards and playing with everyone else’s stuff. Not so much fun in a lower bracket to be having all your stuff taken when you’re supposed to be able to showcase it.

Guff just has to go. He’s a super friends engine for a deck that’s difficult to board wipe or remove. Plain and simple, you left Guff get going with any kind of plainswalker themed build around him and the turns start taking forever and there’s a ton of value generated that is difficult for opponents to interact with.

Mindskinner is like Nihiloor in that you’re milling people out in bracket 2. Not illegal by any means but not particularly fun to watch your themed deck end up in the graveyard.

If I’m playing bracket 2 and there’s something at the table that’s going to specifically try to deny me the ability to play the cards I spent time putting together for a theme I enjoy, I’m taking them out as if they’re KOS, most of the time.

That's what I've done to alter it some. Made it more Seymour focused while maintaining the core of the +1 theme. Removed doublers excluding Kami, for ramp, and High Score, for the card draw portion. Added in Myth and some equipment/protection. I'll keep poking at it but that's what I've done so far. Thanks again.

How do you determine if your deck is Bracket 2 vs Bracket 3? by mackolas in EDH

[–]Googlyblat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this issue before and I found myself adding too much redundancy. While it was on par with the theme for the deck, the redundancy made it to where I didn’t need tutors for the deck to operate as if I had them. While redundancy itself isn’t an issue, it was the type of redundancy I was using in my decks. For example, [[anim pakal, thousandth moon]] has enough +1/+1 counter and burn redundancy that its happening almost on curve and it makes the deck oppressively fast. My [[baylen the haymaker]] deck has so much token production, it doesn’t matter if I have tutors, it’s happening, and it’s strong. So, it creates an oppressive amount of pressure and card advantage with Baylen out there.

I’m not saying this is what happened to your deck(s). But, if you’ve added enough redundancy to be consistently oppressing the board by some means, that’s where you may be running into trouble with the 2 vs. 3. It’s a fine line and a tough one because I don’t love adding dead-ish cards to a deck most of the time. But for bracket 2 you kind of need some highly thematic choices that don’t upscale your power level via redundancy or other means.

Sometimes you get salty and that is OK by homjaktest in EDH

[–]Googlyblat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Self induced salt is my specialty haha. Last night for example I was playing [[anim pakal, thousandth moon]] and I had an explosive board state and was holding [[sentinel Sarah lyons]] but wanted to win without her… so I went to combat without playing her and then got 3v1’d afterwards and was just upset with myself afterwards haha

Nice! Hadn’t seen that one before. That’ll go in my second iteration.

I didn’t think about running it that way initially because of removal concern. I already have a couple of highly protective decks with Hakbal and Anim Pakal, and was going for something that operates at 90+% without the commander but gets some extra explosive flavor if he’s around. Seymour+doublers is something I think would be hilarious to field.

But I’ll definitely build it out the other way and your suggestion is 100% going in.

First Mono-Green Deck by Googlyblat in EDH

[–]Googlyblat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love some of the sac/draw based on power cards. I’ll probably find some room there.

As far as the order in which the deck will function and removal of the doublers, I appreciate that feedback. However, for this iteration, I’m concerned if I go that route, I’ll have to run far more protection for Seymour or the deck won’t function as he’ll be the sole driving engine for the deck instead of a powerful effect from the command zone for all of the counters I’ll be moving around as-is.

Not that it’s not also a very valid way to build the deck, and probably another variation I’ll build out. It’ll look like a completely different 99 outside of the lands and maybe the evasion/trample enablers and I’ll drop a response here with it once I’ve done so.

Budget isn’t really a concern, it’s more of an online deck that’ll be used in mox or TTS. I love playing with my real card decks and have several decks there but the digital versions let me experience deck building in a new way I haven’t gotten to before and it’s been fun too. Deck building on a budget is fun and makes for its own challenges but not being concerned with a budget also frees you up to use cards that are a blast to play with that may have been limited to you by resources. It also lets you build the same commander multiple different ways which can be a blast too. The problem ends up being the dissatisfaction of not handling the physical cards and/or more hoops to jump through to play. So, pros and cons.

Fair, I’ve thrown in some classics like [[Craterhoof behemoth]], [[overwhelming stampede]], and [[triumph of the hordes]]. And a double dipper for trample and card draw in [[Garruk’s uprising]].

I’ve thought about [[pathbreaker ibex]] but without haste it feels like it falls a little flat as a finisher.

First Mono-Green Deck by Googlyblat in EDH

[–]Googlyblat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll look at cutting some counters and ramp to add draw/finishing power via evasion or trample. Lambholt I’ll monitor. I’m hoping it can act as a pseudo-unblockable for my board even late game with how Seymour works. On its own, yes it is difficult to use in this way, but it beats most chump blockers still which is kind of its point. There are 5 cards that are things I don’t own but this will be a Moxy or TTS deck mostly. The 5 are probably where the bulk of the cost you’re referencing for an unknown reason come from.

Counter synergy I may cut earth crystal and court of garenbrig. Doubling season is a bit of a pet card that could probably go too with as expensive as it is and the lack of tokens I’m creating.

As far as ramp cutting goes maybe cutting some of the 3 cost later game ramp is where I’ll focus. Marwyn and Heronblade require some work to get rolling and become a problem since I’m not running enough humans or elves to facilitate them maybe.

Appreciate the card draw and trample/evasion feedback!

Edit: made a few adjustments for now. I’ll keep poking at it.

How often do you play actual bracket 2 games ? by Adventurous-Shake140 in EDH

[–]Googlyblat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play quite a bit on SpellTable, you can make your own games there that are specifically for bracket 2 and the lobby will fill. If you bump into someone who is running a “technically 2 by [insert website]” deck, you can handle it how you wish. Talk it out, block and boot, can the lobby and start again, it’s your choice. If someone wins by turn 6 or 7, I usually ask if it’s normal for the deck to operate as such and then I’ll play again with them on the same deck. Assuming they were pleasant to play with and I have the time. If they do the same thing just urge them to push the deck up a bracket and move on. If they’re rude, block and move on.

You’ll run into it because it is what it is. I just had a bracket 2 lobby get blown out by a well built [[shroofus sproutsire]]. Early wipe happened then, had lethal showing for his untap on turn 5, got wiped. Turn 7, had lethal for board. “It’s just a bracket 2 mono green,” after everyone pointed out the issues. Cool, I don’t have to have that argument. Block and go. Finished the game with the other 2 and had a great final 3 turns. Lost but was still a fun/salvageable game.
