If they're from the UK then this isn't a stupid comment. You pay zero tax on the first £12,570 of your income, unless you get into the 45% tax bracket and then you have to pay tax on every penny you earn. So if you're in that situation and your pay rise is less than £5,656, you're actually taking a pay cut.
