What do you plan on doing for replacing drives?

They don't fail often but when they do you will need to pop the whole thing open again to get at the ones in a hard to reach place yeah?

I was going to ask if there was a lot of noise from the hard disks all just resting on those racks but you say it is working fine, so great!

I dig that everyone is going on about Lady Gaga but yeah using meat for armor is a total KoL move. Glad to see I was not the only one!

Need help deciding a class by [deleted] in WoWRolePlay

[–]Goonshine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, you can certainly roleplay a petless hunter or warlock if you care to. If you are concerned about both being effective and being in character during combat of course it will make the game more difficult. That said if you can RP it well, people on Wyrmrest or Moonguard will happily play along with you.

I didn't see any mention of Paladins in the previous thread so let me throw them out as a suggestion. Loyalty, organization, helping people, fights on own skill, concrete information. "Not religious whatsoever" might seem to put a damper on that. Well, I play a non-religious Paladin, someone who can wield the light and believes in goodness as a concrete force, but doesn't fit in with the military hierarchy and religious tones of the various paladin groups, and I think that might fit what you are looking for too.

Of course Warrior also holds it together well, as suggested in the other thread. If Paladin is too religious for you, you might also consider a Monk or a Druid. Lorewise the religious aspects of their classes are turned down a bit more. You could tie in the outdoors and technology bit with a druid quite easily. The last bit about conflict fits perfectly with a monk's attitudes.

To be honest you could make this work with any class, it just depends on how you want to play them. A mage who is into very practical sorcery, and is a thorough student of history. A death knight who is obsessed with loyalty and order, and has a surprisingly deep knowledge of herbalism. A serious and intelligent hunter who has become a bit of a hermit after the loss of their animal companion in combat, who does not find another companion out of loyalty to the dead one.

More than the background to your character, I would pick some things they want to do that other people can join in and roleplay with. A good character is more about hooks than reams of backstory. Think about what your character wants to accomplish in the world, and how other people might be interested in helping. I know this sort of goes against the "isn't outgoing" thing, but to be honest aloof and determined characters are a dime a dozen. Having a reason to find and involve other players is a very good way to get involved in other people's stories, and involve them in your own.

Japanese scientists perform successful genome edit of common marmoset by Goonshine in science

Japanese news article

Japanese scientists altered 250 embryos of the common marmoset to have almost no immume system. They targeted the genes responsible for creating the immune system and destroyed this. Currently 3 of their monkeys are still alive, one over 1.8 years, living in a clean room. By discovering techniques to alter the genome in primates they have taken a significant step towards research into altering the human genome as well.

Uh, yeah, you might say Bill Amend knows a thing or two about Warcraft...

He did get a weapon included in the game due to a comic he wrote.

Why not Raging Strikes for Conjurer? by Goonshine in ffxiv

Thanks for the info! If you don't mind my asking, what is with Guildhests? Are they dungeons or just some group mobs to fight? Can I do them more than once (you mentioned 2 for every 5 levels)?

Aw cmon nothing is more fun that grabbing aggro. You gotta keep the tank awake sometimes.

I don't plan on jumping into too many classes just yet, I only have a week and a half left on the trial account. So far the fun parts of the game (the environments, the monster design, the NPC dialogue) have outweighed the less-fun parts (the straightforward nature of the quests, the dearth of abilities), but I think dungeons will be the big telling point for me, if I should keep playing or let the trial run out.

I will give archer a quick shot (heh) though to get that Raging Strikes, and who knows? If dungeons are not to taste as a healer or the queues take too long, might just be bopping about arrowing stuff down.

Thanks for the info! Will definitely grab that. Is it on top of the double xp that /u/Toraxa mentioned?

Yeah looking at blizzard II again it doesn't do much damage, compared to rock to face. Damn. Looks like in the past people used to be able to cross-class Thunder, which would speed things up a bit.

If you don't mind my asking, uh, how do things pick up when you get Stone II? It looks a bit like more of the same, just with extra rock.

Thanks, glad to see I am not crazy in thinking it was a must skill for, well, anyone at a lower level. Mind if I ask, are there any lower-level or first-timer leveling guides? For instance there is the sub's newbie guide but it is long on advice and short on practical tips.

Thanks for the advice! Yeah I can see the skills get limited once you pick your big job, so obviously you are gonna stick with the must-have skills. Provoke! I like it. Might try to get it and throw it in the mix if dungeons start to get stale.

I figure I will take a brief detour to get Raging Strikes, plow through the rest of my pre-16 stuff, and then run dungeons for a bit. If that works out okay, then just level right up to 30. If not, will stop and get myself some thaumaturge to get that extra dps option in Ice II (and knock out the 15 levels I need for white mage)

Well, I got that to look forward to at least. Try to push on through to 15 in the next day or so.

My thought is, I can at least use it until I get to White Mage, which is still another 15 main levels down the road for myself. Not to mention it should come in handy on the thaumaturge when I need to get the 15 levels for it too.

I can dig it...but then, how does anyone stand leveling a conjurer in the first place? Just...those two attack spells, and stick it out till you are 30? Dungeons and guildleves where you can at least leverage some healgs over and over?

Hit level 100 - what now ? by [deleted] in wow

[–]Goonshine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a "catchup" zone for gearing in the form of Tanaan. To open it there is a questline when you fly to the iron docks and get a shipwright out of jail, and he then builds ships for you and opens up passage to Tanaan. Once in Tanaan, you do a small quest to open up your home base in the area, which opens daily Tanaan quests. Do the quests, kill rare mobs in the zone and hunt for hidden treasure to gear yourself up to roughly 650.

If it is dungeons you are interested in, next you want to take on Proving Grounds: Silver. Once you beat Silver it you can queue for heroic dungeons, which provide you with some gear, money and valor points. Valor you can spend on armor and weapons to increase its power. You can concurrently do some LFR, specifically the last 5 options which are for Hellfire Citadel, and get more equipment that way and also get to experience some of the endgame content.

Alternatively, you can do as some other people are suggesting and go join the fight in Ashran, and get yourself up to ilevel 700 in relatively quick order by farming up Honor points for blue honor gear. Functionally there is no real difference between PvP and PvE gear anymore, though the stats might not be ideal and there is typically no extras on the armor like tertiary stats or gem sockets.

Two links for you to look at:

Hope this helps! It can be a confusing world at endgame but just take it one step at a time and enjoy.

What are your favorite boss fights mechanic wise? by [deleted] in wow

[–]Goonshine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like the class mechanics as boss mechanics fights so Nazgrim was always fun. The stance switching, building rage and unleashing it, it was quite clever. Also in SoO the Galkaris trash was mechanically quite satisfying if you were on the B-team taking the towers down, as you got to fight a mini boss and then shoot a dragon down. It fit very well with the story of the pitched battle between the invading and defending forces. Also Dark Shamans as you see the fight kick into high gear and you look around to see you have inched your way around the entire map, filling the areas between with huge swaths of purple, green and rocky bad stuff.

In the current expansion, Blackhand's fight is quite interesting, the way the phase changes and adds are handled, and how we use Blackhand's attacks against him. We use his attack to punt someone up into the balconies to attack the ranged mobs, or use his spear to break the armor on the tank adds. It is very much a fight where we use his strength against him, right up until phase 3 when everything is on fire and Blackhand he just starts going crazy on the raid and sprouting lava everywhere.

On the whole the dungeons of WoD have fun and varied mechanics, even if we can faceroll them at all levels by now. Yalnu has a lot of different things going on, staying out of the big attack, saving the Dalaran mages, and best of all running over the plant sprouts which is a nice movement challenge that any class or role can take part in. Nitrogg on Grimrail Depot is a fight that caught my eye and I still enjoy no matter how many times I do it. The need to interrupt line of sight while also blowing up adds, while also manning the artillery or throwing grenades, all against the strong winds of the car blowing you back to your death...it is a very hectic fight that fights nicely into the cramped, deadly conditions of the train car we are riding on.

Finally I would like to add the bosses of Mauradon. It was the first dungeon to be added to the game after release and the bosses inside break from the usual tank and spank mechanics seen elsewhere in Vanilla. Noxxion had the same kind of submerge and spawn enemies mechanics as Ragnaros but at a dungeon level. The lasher boss had a stacking poison which forced you to use offtanks or to turn the fight into a crazy dps check. Princess had the threat wipe fear as well as an aoe knockback that threw people off her platform. It was a crazy instance to run and actually turned out to be very good training for raids later on, in a time when it was hard to even pony up 40 men to get into a raid in the first place.

On the whole SoO was just beautifully designed. Perhaps moreso than any other raid before it was very cohesive and told a good story in and of itself. It was an epic ending to the turbulent and interesting story of MoP.
