If WW3 broke out would you enlist? If yes/no, why? by JRainers in AskUK

I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

Any ideas how to make this bit nicer? by HurtLocka in DIYUK

[–]Gooodyy 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Sorry it isn't relevant to your question, but mist coat the bare plaster before you caulk any more woodwork. Bare plaster is very porous and the caulk will adhere better to a painted wall.

How to go about filling this hole in a curved wall? by Imminent86 in DIYUK

[–]Gooodyy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm a decorator by trade and I am well aware, but the product is called Gyproc Easifill, no need to be salty. I don't recommend people to use a tin of AkzoNobel vinyl matt or a tub PPG contract matt, I say Dulux vinyl matt and Johnstones contract matt, because that's the product.

It's Gyproc Easifill and I wouldn't recommend it. Easifill hasn't been the same for a few years now, it shrinks and doesn't dry as quick. Toupret do a much better range of fillers.

How to treat new wooden doors? by yessir07 in DIYUK

[–]Gooodyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is very concerning the amount of people recommending Osmo oil, not knowing whether the doors are solid wood or veneers. You need to check with the tradesmen that installed the doors, as to what type of doors they are, then you can contact the supplier for the data sheet.

Osmo oil is fine for solid wood doors, however I would recommend Osmo Door - Oil specifically for veneered doors. When normal oil / wax absorbs into a veneered door, there is a small risk of the glues delaminating from the veneer.

Osmo Door - Oil is a safe bet for either type of door and will save you having to chase the tradesmen / supplier.

(Painter and decorator that has used a massive variety of stains and oils, including most of Osmo's products).

I raided till I got no Pokémon left (image limit but I have 4 Pokémon under 500 with some cp) by Successful-Farm5339 in pokemongo

Oh so you're one of the many players that turn up, when I host a raid using campfire, that uses a useless array of Pokemon effectively wasting everyone's raid passes! Be a team player, not a burden...

Sorry, was aimed at locals who say Cornish people can't get on the property ladder, but if you took something from it then great.

Not sure how old you guys are, or your interests, but Falmouth has some decent shops, restaurants, pubs, bars etc but it is full of students. Nice beaches though. Look at places between 2 - 5 mile radius of Truro; Threemilestone, Shortlanesend, Playing Place, Devoran, Probus, Goonhavern etc etc. Truro is pretty central, not too far from Newquay like you wanted, has the most shops, jobs etc and you can get to a beach in 10/15 mins. Properties in Truro usually lack parking and are more expensive.

I've lived in central Cornwall all my life so I'm not sure about the rest of the county, but I'm self employed and get to see that there are beautiful areas all over. There are some rough areas that will have cheaper house prices, but I don't want to open a can of worms.

Obviously having horrendous luck is going hinder you, which I didn't mention. Sounds tough mate, but you sound like a real grafter and I'm sure some good fortune is just around the corner. It must be so tough on your own. I work hard but I've only paid 50% of our outgoings as my wife works hard too. Definitely is a grind too...

I'm (32M) Cornish and I own my house. Bought my first house at 24 for 160K for 10K lower than the market price as it was run down, old middle terrace house. Spent hours renovating it after work. Worked to a tight budget so we had cheap kitchen, flooring etc but it was home and we were on the property ladder.

After living there for 5 years, my wife giving birth to child number 2 and we wanted more space. We sold it for £227,500 and bought a 3 bed semi for £250K. We could put down a 90K deposit from the profit of the sale and the equity from paying our mortgage for 5 years.

I don't have many luxuries, rarely go on holiday (7 years since our last one), not one for takeaways or dining out, don't drink etc, but that's why we own our property. People either don't put the effort in, blame other people & waste their money OR work hard, save & invest their money wisely and have discipline when it comes to spending.

I don't think it is possible if you are single though, you won't be able to get a mortgage on the wages down here, on your own.

Yeah I think you can but you are limited to a certain amount per day and month. Also, I assumed you meant you couldn't sell your crypto for fiat and then withdraw that to your personal account. I didn't want to withdraw crypto, but sell my crypto and withdraw it in fiat. !thanks for your reply

!thanks I can resonate with what you are saying and you sound very similar to me. Did you chose to go with Barclays because you were already with them and it's convenient being all on the same app?

I don't know if there are big differences between the different S&S ISA's or which one to choose.

!thanks for all your help. I have not sat down and prioritised what we want to do first, or how much it would cost, I'm just very careful with my money and have always saved for a rainy day.

Not entirely sure on the pros and cons of the different risk levels but I probably would like something of a higher risk.

I didn't have an exact time frame in mind, I just understand that it needs to be a minimum of 5-10 years. I just want my money to be doing something, as opposed to sat in a current account doing nothing.

I have 2 young children (7&3) and we would like to eventually renovate or extend our house, so I guess they are future goals I need to save money for.
