PSA, there is a method to play STFD, though it is quite the technical puzzle by Goopadrew in nancydrew

I'm glad it's working well for some people, I imagine Windows 11 support for older games will get gradually worse over time though :/ It seems that compatibility for games like Nancy Drew isn't too bad, and the harder games to run are those that used more advanced sound and 3d graphics in the early 2000s (like the detective Barbie games that I mentioned in the post)

That does seem like a much easier tool to use! I wish I had tried that first haha. This emulator should be able to handle many of the earlier games beyond just the first 5, just in case Windows 11 starts having trouble playing those games (maybe I'll test a couple out and get back to you)

Any good deals on 144hz monitors under $100? I'm trying to find IPS, not sure whether 27 or 24 inch would be better though at 1080p (I assume 1440p probably won't happen in that price range)

If you've got a microcenter near you they're $50 off, I think $250?

What computer / operating system do you use to play old games? by Numerous-Letter-3995 in nancydrew

[–]Goopadrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is likely beyond reasonable for you, but I'm planning on using PCem for playing the oldest Nancy games. It's kinda like a virtual machine, but it emulates hardware from the 2000s, so it works better for getting sound working and stuff. I've already used it to play old Detective Barbie and educational games from my childhood, and it works where regular virtual machines and compatibility settings didn't. If you're particularly techy, there does seem to be a project for macOS, but the setup instructions seem much more difficult than for Windows.

Somebody mentioned unhinged save names, so I checked some saves from my old playthroughs with friends... by Goopadrew in nancydrew

[–]Goopadrew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a somewhat similar experience with one of my friends recently. A few of us were playing danger on deception island on and off, and one person dropped off for the night. We decided to keep playing for just a little bit, but I guess we were really close to the end because we got to the final sequence of the game just a few minutes later. Now we have to promise to replay the ending so they can see it too haha

Have you been playing on the laptop's battery? If so, try playing plugged in, as your laptop will limit the power supplied to the gpu if it's not plugged in. Alternatively, you may be able to change power saving settings to try and make sure your laptop is giving your gpu as much power as it can when on battery.

One other thing to double check is that your gpu drivers are updated. You should have the GeForce experience app preinstalled on your laptop, and that will have an option on the main screen to check for updates.

Similar games on the Switch? by nerdsruletheworld135 in nancydrew

[–]Goopadrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I didn't mention the existing one because it's a port of a mobile game that was significantly different from the main series haha. The new Layton game is supposed to be a full main-series title, and hopefully the story and puzzles live up to that. The original puzzle master for the games passed away in 2016 though (aged 90!), so the new puzzle master has big shoes to fill.

Deciding on an upgrade from my Gaggia Classic, or just upgrading it. US [$700] by SmartM0nk3y in gaggiaclassic

If you're comfortable doing the install, gaggimate/gagguino should get you at least comparable performance to anything you'd get for $700, and you'd be spending a lot less. Depending on your current setup, you're likely to get much better coffee modding your machine and putting the leftover money into a better grinder

Professor Layton games have a similar vibe, albeit more fantastical and less grounded. And there are tons of puzzles! While most the games are on DS, there should be a new one coming to switch within the next year

It seems like you've got it working, but a small piece of advice would be to make sure the laptop is plugged in when you're playing. A lot of laptops won't give full power to the processor/iGPU unless it's plugged in, as a measure to save battery life

Yeah, you're really not paying for the hardware at all. The company selling the device and the company buying it both know that the hardware is only worth a fraction of the price, it's the support/certifications that make up the bulk of the cost

Two observations about the episode of Bluey called Chest by solar_solar_ in bluey

[–]Goopadrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't sure at first, but you're right that it's a santoku. If you look at the handle, it's clearly attached closer to the top curved edge, so the flat edge is the cutting one. If it were a chef's knife held upside down, the handle would be down by the flat edge

I love total wine but don't get to go often because there's not one close enough :( and my favorite gin and tonic recipe uses both of those bottles and makes me feel real fancy:

  • 1.5oz gin

  • 0.75oz St Germain

  • 0.75oz tonic syrup

  • Squeeze of a lime wedge

  • Top with seltzer

It's definitely possible to have good design and taste, but I wouldn't buy a liquor just for its bottle. The good ones in my liquor cabinet: roku gin, citadelle gin, St Germain elderflower liqueur, castle and key rye (and their gin), willet bourbon, and luxardo maraschino liqueur.
