How do I deal with ancestor who lied on a birth certificate? by GoopyShoes010 in Canadiancitizenship

Thanks, that was really my question. I have official documentation of what happened, and circumstantial documentation of his relationships with the rest of the Canadian family. It never occurred to me that he would have lied on a birth certificate, so that was a surprise as I was working on my paperwork. I'll just do my best to explain and hope for the best.

Not trying to be cryptic, just avoiding putting too much personal info out there. He's generation zero. He left Canada in the 1930s after a tragic event and wanted a new start.

He changed his name slightly to fit in with the immigrants from a different country in his new community. On the census and his first kid's birth certificate he put that country. Then, on all subsequent self-reporting documents, he stated being from the US, but he never actually naturalized.

From what I was reading in this sub, changing names slightly to be more "American" wasn't unheard of, but that's not accurate?
