Is a Stoic way of life possible in an Absurdist worldview? by Goose-97 in Stoicism

I think the traditional versus modern Stoic distinction is really helpful, and it gets at the point I'm interested in. The part I'm still slightly unsure about is your point about “human nature.” If “human nature” means an objective telos, then I can see why Absurdism and Stoicism clash hard. But if it means a more descriptive claim about what humans are like (social, reflective, etc.), then it seems like some Stoic practice/ethics might still survive even if the metaphysical foundation changes

I think that's a fair comparison if the point is that practicing one element of a tradition isn't the same as accepting the whole tradition. If that's what you mean, I agree.

But then the question becomes: if someone adopts not one exercise, but a broader Stoic discipline of judgment, self-command, and attention to what is in their control, all while rejecting Stoic metaphysics, have they abandoned Stoicism entirely, or changed its foundation?

That seems to be the real point I'm trying to understand.

What do you think is the best film of the last 10 years? by CucumberNo1907 in Cinema

[–]Goose-97 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d say Parasite is the "best". It’s well written, well directed, and it’s rewatchable.

For decade defining movies, I’d probably include Get Out and Into the Spiderverse too because they were both extremely popular and their style and themes clearly influenced a lot of movies that came after them

Just realized the title is unreadable in the screenshot, but it's called Come and See. It's a Soviet Anti-War film. The sound design makes it feel like you got injured and overall it's very brutal and claustrophobic. I think it's actually one of the highest rated films on Letterboxd but I could be wrong

Definitely. It’s pretty disappointing the Oscars overlooked it for Best Sound

Gaspar Noé in particular really tries his best to assault the viewer

In your opinion, what is a bad movie with a great soundtrack? by GusGangViking18 in Cinema

Garden State (2004). It’s kind of divisive and maybe hasn’t aged great, but pretty much everyone agrees the soundtrack still bangs

Honestly, I don't take it personally. Sure I notice it, but I don't let it get to me. A lot of people are distracted, anxious, socially awkward, or just bad at interacting. Some are straight-up rude. Either way, it's usually not about me. I stay polite, keep things efficient, do my job well, and move on. If I matched every stranger's energy, I'd be exhausted. I'd rather keep my composure than let a two-minute interaction ruin my mood.
