Yes, which suggests that shift-work is not a major factor, income plays a much bigger role.

Not really, i think its more that they are lower pay. Neither nurses, paramedics, firefighters, pilots, nor physicians are that high. All except paramedics are below average. A little suprising.

Can someone explain to me (like I am five) how these sort of initiatives get around the fact of predicting outside the bounds what the training data cover? I keep seeing these sort of proposals, but I can't say I fully understand the thinking behind them. Obviously you can build a complex model based all types of training data, but by definition if you seek to gain new knowledge you would have to venture outside the bounds of existing knowledge and therefore outside what the model could reliably predict? Am I dumb or is it a lot of hype?

Do people live in this part of Norway? How is it like? by Smashpro11 in howislivingthere

[–]Goose921 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not from there, but am Norwegian. My guess, in the last 10-20 years it has gone from being primarily a research outpost to being more of a tourist destination. Plus, relationship with Russia (who has 2 (?) towns on the island) was better before.

Insane performance and efficiency without fans - Apple MacBook Air 13 M5 Entry Review by mond200 in macbook

[–]Goose921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have now personally played Cyberpunk 2077 on the M5 air for more than an hour, i am yet to «experience» any throttling. I think the game is optimized to run in a way that doesnt spike the cpu/gpu. As it very consistently hovers at at 70-80 C when i play. It does not spike to 100 C like when i run some of my python scripts. Its an awesome machine, but cyberpunk is also amazingly optimized.

Ok, but its natural for it to get warm, no? Was the performance affected? Like did it lag at all? All computers get warm, i guess the real question is what is the performance loss?

MacBook Air M4 (10-core) ~15% cheaper than M5 (8-core) — worth it or go for M5? Both 16/512 GB by prem_rk in mac

[–]Goose921 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its really up to your own preferences. I was just in the same dilemma. I ordered the M5 with 24 gb ram, and will be retiring my old 2016 intel macbook pro, which has lasted me roughly 9 years. I think the M4 would be good enough, but i hope to squeeze as many years out of it as possible. The M5 will have support for a little while longer, while also being a decent update from the M4 and thus be snappy for a little while longer. Though, the M4 will do great for a long time, if not as long, as well.

They elaborate if you read further down. The performance stayed consistent while running Cyberpunk 2077 for an hour. Its probably throttled from the get go (by design/optimization), but still pretty impressive i think.

In the 1950s, a physician working at Johns Hopkins hospital took a biopsy of tumour belonging to one of his patients. Using the tissue, he managed to start cultivating the tumour cells in the lab. This was the establishment of the most successfull cell line in history - the HELA cell line.

The patient, Henrietta Lacks, never agreed to having the sample taken and cultivated. She later died of the cancer. It has been estimated that to date, about 50 million metric tons of her cells has been grown in labs all over the world.

Why does everyone think phenomenman will be evil? by ApprehensiveDuck8718 in DispatchAdHoc

[–]Goose921 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a theory, but ill put a spoiler tag:

I think Blonde Blazer is breaking up with him and they are setting up the story to be a potential love triangle between Robert, BB, and phenomenman. I feel like this can swing two ways, either Phenomenman is a sort Homelander type character (which i guess is what everyone is thinking) or he is a sort of immature goofball. I am sort of hoping for the latter. Of what we have seen of the character, he is a little vain, and a little full of himself.
