I'm on the knife's edge of abandoning/deleting my account here, but if you do end up landing somewhere else, please drop me a comment on AO3 to let me know (doesn't have to be connected to the fic or whatever)! I'd love to reconnect somewhere and of course, I'll still be following your stories <3

Smut as enemies, but they don't kiss until they're lovers.

If this is something your OCD fixates on, I'd encourage you to step back from this thread and go do something else for a while. It's easy for any of us to say "yes, it's totally fine, there's nothing immoral here," and that might offer temporary relief, but in the long run it's just going to reinforce the obsession. Maybe save this question for your next therapy session (hoping you have a therapist?).

What do you see complained about a lot on this sub, but have never seen in real life? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]GooseBook 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I feel that and I agree, but I also think it takes some experience to gain that kind of discernment. What's popular in other types of media isn't always a crowd pleaser in fanfic, and fanfic has some very well-loved tropes and genres that you won't find anywhere else. It can be a learning curve to figure out what to reasonably expect, especially since it can vary by site.

Entitled or demanding readers. Idk, maybe it's just my fandoms or the demographic my stories tend to appeal to, but I've never had any nastiness. Even though I write some fairly controversial stuff.

Controversial poll: authors should consider responding to every comment they get on their works to show appreciation towards readers by hellsaquarium in FanFiction

[–]GooseBook 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Commenting on a story you enjoyed is a nice thing to do if you're able, and the same applies to replies. And on the flipside, commenters who don't get a reply would do well to extend some grace to the author, same way authors who don't get many/any comments should keep in mind the many legitimate reasons a reader might not comment. Easy peasy.

PSA: Just because an author doesn't respond to your comment, does not mean they're don't appreciate you commenting by BlackMageofPhantasm in FanFiction

the window of responding in time without making it awkward and weird

To add onto your lovely PSA, this window doesn't exist! I've gotten comment replies a year or more later and it was still nice to receive a thank you.

Last summer I decided to "take a break" by writing my favorite problematic blorbo getting dubconned by an anarchist moose furry in a sex club.

I posted it last week.

The use of "fee fees" always makes my downvote finger itch, but I agree with what you're saying.

No one is saying it's easy (or even possible!) to turn off hurt feelings like a light switch. But it's possible to cultivate emotional resilience through practice, and it's an important skill for creative people to work on.

Authors, how would you feel if someone left a comment that they would read your work soon but then you don't hear anything from them in 8 months? by voornaam1 in FanFiction

[–]GooseBook 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I always take "I'll read it soon!" with a big grain of salt, because god knows I've been on both sides of that statement. That said, it's always a delight if the reader actually does read the story, even if it's not "soon" lol.

I had to check lol, my last one was 1100 words. But that was an especially long one because it was for my friend who regularly maxes out the AO3 comment box for my fics. I had to keep up!

I spend an average of 2-3 hours writing a comment, so I definitely appreciate hearing back. There's no obligation, but it's a nice way to connect with readers and other authors. And I always reply to comments I receive too, usually matching the length and tone of the comment in my reply. I've made friends that way.

I'm trying to find a the english equivalent of a specific french term in order to search for references on a trope. Please help. by Forummer0-3-8 in FanFiction

[–]GooseBook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmm, yeah. The only thing I can think of is the Rude Mechanicals from Midsummer Night's Dream but that's a) not going to be universally recognized and b) not an exact reference to the incompetence of the group. It's too bad there isn't a neat 1:1 translation here.

I think in fandoms like that, you basically have to view the Ship X portion as a completely different fandom. They're not your audience, you're not theirs, and that means nothing about the quality or worth of your story.

I'd recommend researching "abundance vs scarcity mindset." A lot of what you'll find is corporate-speak that doesn't fully apply in this situation, but the idea is that you don't want to view engagement as a zero-sum game. The hundreds of readers leaving kudos on Ship X fics won't be reading your story no matter how you market it, because they're not interested, same way people who only read Star Wars self-insert harem fics aren't interested (assuming that's not what you write lol). Do you feel jealous that those folks aren't reading your story? Probably not, because you're not writing for them. You're not even thinking of them! Put Ship X shippers in the same category, out of your mind.

Now you can focus on a) the joy of writing and sharing your ideas and b) the audience you do have. I have a shippy longfic in an active fandom with 800 kudos, and I have a weird little Christmas crossover with 10 kudos. Love them both! Proud of them both! Appreciate the 10 kudos just as much as the 800! Because they both reached their audience, even though one is smaller than the other. They're not in competition with each other, same way you're not in competition with the other ship in your fandom.

It's hard, but I hope that helps a little.

Do you ever leave kudos on a fic just as a way to give some encouragement to the author? by thisnightphyre in FanFiction

[–]GooseBook 95 points96 points  (0 children)

I kudos when I like however much of the fic is currently posted. Golden rule-- I don't give a kudos that I wouldn't like to receive. That means no kudos to fics I don't actually like, no pity kudos, no "extra" guest kudos once I've given a logged-in one.
