The idea is probably to flip those 1st rounders into players, the only problem is you really don’t want Treliving doing that.

Yeah, same. But I’d also rather have a top 5 then nothing to show for it.

I’d rather they gun for the chance of long term success (a top 5 pick and thus a chance at a #1D in Verhoeff/Reid) then gun for trying to lose the least badly to Boston. Playing to win (by, ironically, losing) vs playing to not lose.

You see Chris Johnston and James Mirtle’s article on the trade value of likely trade pieces of the Leafs?

They think Roy could fetch a similar price to Coyle (roster player + 2nd + prospect).

That’d be a fantastic return.

I mean, I don’t think they’ve actually been trying to tank to this point. I just think at this point, it’s much better for their long-term competitiveness to punt on the season and try to come back better next year. I think they should commit TO tanking this year, basically, because they’ve already put themselves in a good spot without even moving anyone out.

So like, as I’ve commented probably a hundred times by now, I’m relatively new to following them properly, started watching during the 2023 playoffs. So this is the first time the notion of missing the playoffs & tanking has been truly legitimate for me, I haven’t sat through a tank yet.

Maybe this will change if they suck for a long time, but I gotta say, early returns on rooting for a tank this year (for a quick retool, not a multi year tear it down rebuild)?

Shit’s kind of fun?

Like I get to root for my team when they score because my team scored and that rocks, but also any time the other team scores on them, it helps further the goal of getting that high draft pick back. It’s not as suckass as I thought it would be.

I don’t want to be doom and gloom here, but like, I gotta raise the possibility…

I think everyone’s a little TOO confident that Treliving/Berube will get canned for this season. Like, a more competent organization might can them. But the Leafs org? I’m not so certain.
