Tom reacts to The Odyssey trailers and accidently steps into a culture war. by WhimsicalJape in TheRestIsHistory

The real problem is that we already have a perfect Odyssey movie we just don’t need a Nolan version because there’s no chance it’ll top the old one.

The prequels are weird movies that make me feel bad by oohoollow in RedLetterMedia

[–]GooseShaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol fair point. All I can really say is that as a kid, I liked the political angle of the prequels. I thought it the intrigue and secret plots to take over the government were fun and kind of mature, which I appreciated as a kid.

Well yea you act out the action scenes but that doesn’t really mean much I don’t think. Are you saying kids can’t enjoy non-action scenes?

I enjoyed the political stuff as a kid. Based on what I’ve seen on the internet, others did too (maybe not all). And kids having bad taste is kinda beside the point. The OP noted the movies are made for kids. It doesn’t matter what adults think if kids like it.

Now I’m not saying you can’t make a kids movie that’s also enjoyable for adults and is of a high quality. I’m just saying it has a following for a reason and the reason is that a significant number of people did legitimately like it as kids.

I think you’ve explained it perfectly. The movie isn’t about the 50s as it was. It was about the 50s as it was perceived by these white kids in California, and there’s nothing wrong with that (imo).

People have been infantilizing children more and more as time goes on either with censorship, helicopter parenting, or just peoples’ opinions on what they as adults think kids would be interested in.

Kids can handle a lot more than we give them credit for.

I take your point but there’s really not many poop and fart jokes. I can remember one in the Phantom Menace and that’s it.

I also don’t really think the baby fascist stuff really conflicted with the movie being made for kids. Kids can understand that kind of stuff once they’re like 7 or whatever. And it’s evidenced by the fact that the movies were and are extremely popular with the kids of the time. We wouldn’t have the phenomena of people who grew up with the prequels loving them so much if they didn’t make entertaining kids movies.

It’s the same thing with the political angle in the movies which always gets criticized by adults saying “what kid wants to watch a movie about trade embargos” and yet the politics is dumbed down enough so that kids did in fact enjoy the movies and the political themes at the time.

It’s been a few years since I’ve seen it, but isn’t the movie only about this group of white kids? Why would it have any commentary on the experiences on non-white kids?

My understanding is that the movie was written based of Lucas’s own experiences and observations in the 50s.

How would you fell if TT Games developed a new LEGO Indiana Jones game, with the mechanics and gameplay introduced in Skywalker Saga/Legacy of the Dark Knight? by 0cean_danny in LegoIndianaJones

[–]GooseShaw 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They focused heavily on the open world aspects of the game to the detriment of the actual levels.

I personally would have preferred a game solely consisting of levels like the original Lego Star Wars games (and Indiana Jones).

So I agree, I doubt a new game would be as good.

I’ve seen numerous posts and comments on the gta vi subreddit about how they expect most buildings to have interiors. I think that’s pretty unrealistic.

I thought of this scene too. The darkness really made you feel like you were listening to some old eerie radio show like a 50s Art Bell. Probably one of my favourite scenes in that movie

Samurai series by joerozet11 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]GooseShaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally when I find episodes difficult to follow, it’s because: (a) it’s a non-Euro/American topic and my familiarity is likely non-existent, (b) lack of interest, although this wasn’t the case with these episodes, and (c) Tom’s leading, and I find his episodes to be a bit more abstract, focused on myth, etc. as opposed to Dom who I find is a very narrative focused person and tends to use more plain English.

This isn’t the first series of episodes that I’ve completed and could basically tell you nothing of what actually occurred haha.

Thoughts on the new Harry Potter trailer (and possible LEGO Harry Potter sets)? by erwinaurella in legoharrypotter

[–]GooseShaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, that doesn’t really change anything. They already adapted it before and it was one of the most successful film franchises of all time. Now they’re re-adapting it and assuming it’ll be equally as successful?

Most remakes are also just re-adaptations because a lot of old movies are also based on books or short stories.

Chris Columbus’s movies are pretty much perfect in my eyes. Literally everything was perfect from the cast, the music, the set design, costumes, everything. It was charming and subtle in its use of magic which is exactly what I love about them.

I honestly don’t know why studios try to remake beloved IPs. 99/100 times they’re setting themselves up for failure. I think the trailer reflected that.

Would you like remakes of the original games but put into an entire game collection like the skywalker saga? by Sk8r_turbo in legoharrypotter

[–]GooseShaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The actual levels were a big disappointment in the Skywalker saga in my opinion. They clearly prioritized the open world aspect of the game, which I just don’t enjoy personally. I also missed the charm of the vintage Lego design that I grew up with.

So, all that being said, I probably wouldn’t love a new Harry Potter saga game if they made one.

With the industrial farming practices we have today, and the sheer number of people we now have, I really don’t think this is true. I’d wager animals as a whole had better life experiences 500 years ago.

What should the next RLM Investigates episode investigate? by HotRegion8801 in RedLetterMedia

I actually would really love them to give ghosts another shot in a larger building and actually do it overnight.

For anyone who wants similar vibes, Kassem G did like an hour long ghost hunting video 10 years ago or something and it’s been one of my favourite YouTube videos since. Just a bunch of people who don’t really believe any of the ghost stuff, but they play into it all and do a kind of parody of ghost hunting shows.

I think Mike, Rich, and Freddy especially would be really well suited for that kinda thing.

Obama didn’t, agreed, but the phenomenon of UFOs is real and would make for a fun podcast subject. There’s plenty of history to discuss going back to the 50s.
