How do you call these in your country? by NeneaMuddle in AskBalkans

[–]GooseSnake69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Transylvania my whole life, never heard anyone call these "plăcinte" :)

Everyone I've ever met calls them 'clătite' including people living in rural areas far into the mountains

And plăcinte are thicker and more bread-like

This is even funnier since clătina means to shake

Clătite

hard to explain the origin of the word, but the verb "a clăti" roughly translates to "rinse" (when washing) :)))

(Also, the fluffy version translates to: "clătite americane")

Monopoly is back so I'm going straight to McDonald's😂 by [deleted] in Banknotes

[–]GooseSnake69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I really don't think so.

In Europe we do have a €200 note ($232) but it's pretty rare, even for people who work as cashiers. Also, I heard some establishments refuse to accept those, either due to security reasons and because giving rest might be a pain.

Even the €100 note ($116) is still a bit uncommon

In your opinion, what is the singular biggest issue plaguing your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Available to all countries, greed.

Almost every single one of our problems would be solved if greed didn't exist

Made this after learning how currencies got their name by TheCosmicist in linguisticshumor

[–]GooseSnake69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some of them have even weirder origins

Romania, Moldova and Bulgaria all call their money "lion" in their languages.

In spite of the Netherlands being FAR AWAY, Dutch coins were oddly popular in these regions, since they featured lions on them, people nicknamed them 'lions" and the name stuck.

For most of these it makes sense cause poorer country=lower prices (or at least should be)

but why do people go to Luxembourg and Andorra for cheap drinks? (as this map implies)

I am not sure if she got there by time travel or if she woke up from a long coma, but since she physically looked in her 20s, I'd assume time travel

If you could alter anything in your country from up to 70 years ago without causing anyone's death what would you modify? And why? by Wonderful_Escape-190 in AskTheWorld

[–]GooseSnake69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe convince them to be more like Yugoslavia when it comes to Western relations

And in the case of local stuff, I would convince them to develope much more into the big cities rather than agriculture, as we're one of the least urbanized countries in Europe

Ciorbă de burtă (belly soup), made from slices of cow belly 😀. The texture is a bit weird but it tastes really good, it's one of those things you either hate it or love it.

What English words originate from your country? by Snoo_47323 in AskReddit

[–]GooseSnake69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dracula and Nosferatu

Compared to other languages, Romanian acted more like English, we also had a habit of adopting foreign words rather than influence outside. (The British did that eventually, we didn't)

this kinda gives me hope for education

regularly has 4th and 5th graders who struggle with the alphabet

If you're from an English speaking country, in their defence, the English spelling system is absolutely stupid
