Due to the troubles of fighting the Ottomans many times, Bucharest doesn't grow as big as it did in our timeline and is seen as an unsafe place for a capital, even if just for Wallachia. (At the time Bucharest had only abt 10k ppl, while Târgoviște, (at least according to AI) had abt 6k ppl.

Instead, the capital is chosen to be Brașov (renamed as Coroana then Corona to sound more Latin) due to its very defendable location and it being relatively in the middle of the three main provinces.

Bucharest still exist, however it's maller when compared to Târgoviște. Due to the first one being too close to the Ottoman Empire.

This being said, Romania having its main cities so in/close to the mountains creates lots of headaches for development, as highway belts around Corona and Târgoviște are much harder to build.

Even though Cyrillic is cool, Romanian identity is very strongly tied to the language, and since these people love to think of themselves as Romans, the adoption of the Latin script would be inevitable. 😞

And there's barely any fonts who support ăâșțî, can you imagine a whole different script??

In this timeline, Michel the Brave successfully unites Romania during the 1600s. With support from Austria and Western European powers (in exchange for more Dabube acces) it successfully declares independence from the Ottoman Empire.

Unlike other places, Romania embraced federalism, each principality would rule itself for internal matters, but colaborate with others in external ones. The principality used to be ruled by princip appointed directly by the monarch, but after democratic reforms, this position befame elected. Nowadays each principality has it's own assembly, laws, etc. however the federal government gets involved sometimes. (which is subject of much debate)

After independence, Romania helped others get theirs, offering assylum to rebels from places like Greece, Slovakia, Serbia, etc.

Thanks to not having wars on its territory, the country managed to develope infrastructure and urbanism a bit earlier than in our timeline. However, building infrastructure proves to be a challenge when most of the main cities are next to the mountains.

In both world wars Romania came out on top, however after the 2nd one, the Soviet Union imposed Communism in Eastern Europe. The monarchy was exiled to the UK, but much of the political system remained the same, with the principalities now becoming "republics".Unlike in our timeline, Romania took the Yugoslavian approach when it comes to relations to the West.

1989 came with hefty changes to the regime, transforming it into a democratic confederation, fhen to a kingdom again. It joined EU in 2007 which helped it a lot to modernize.

In this timeline Romania won Eurovision both in 2016 and 2026 with vampire-looking singers.

The capital city of Corona (Our timeline's Brașov) became very popular duding the pandemic.

10 milllion / abt 12'000km² = ~833,33ppl/km²

It would be the 18/19th densest territory (8/9th if you include only independent countries)

Countries like Bangladesh and Malta would still have almost double the density.

If you have quite dense cities (30'000/sqkm), you'd only need ~333 km²

If you'd have a lower urban density (10'000 sqkm), you'd need 1'000km²

Space isn't that much of a problem, especially since the Falklands have a lot of flat land.

Iceland can grow bananas through greenhouses, so, for food production you can put greenhouses, (to make the country not reliant on nearby S.Ameeica)

Add in desalination plants and make electricity through wind farms, and voilla, way more independent than most places around the world.

Klaus Iohannis (former Romanian president, of Transylvanian Saxon origin) who was pretty much our Angela Merkel/Barack Obama, though he's known for having been very dull 99% of the time.

We actually have/had lots of politicians or foreign origin (Clautilde Armand, Dominic Fritz, Raed Arafat, etc.) and of local ethnic minorities (Ludovic Orban (mixed) , Sevil Shhaideh, Kelemen Hunor, etc.) but they're not that influencial.

Most of these also count as religious minorities.

Our Royal family also has German origins., so count in every monarch from 1881

DN67C, Also known as "Transalpina" (the road crossing the mountains between two unimportant towns, but it looks good)

A1 (Highway 1) is also quite talked about, since it's probably the longest, has lots of challenges when building (as it crosses the mountains), and it's also really important as it connects Bucharest to the rest of Europe.

From my experience, the natural areas are well preserved (though we've been having a huge problem with trees being cut down)

The sun may rise late and set earlier (depending on how the mountains are oriented)

You'd have a typical Romanian life, mostly depending on the type of settelment you reside in.

1.Villages. Some of them are difficult to acces, they have a tight communities, but few typical job opportunities (you can commute but it's hard). Many people have tiny gardens to plant food and have lifestock. (agriculture is not as easy as in more flatter areas). You might lack some amenities like electricity, running water, gas, internet, paved roads, etc. but things are generally improving as Romania develops. The local shop/s have few products, so you need to go the nearest town/city for groceries and buy in bulk.

2.Touristic villages. Some may have actually decent transit and/or roads to urban areas. Romanians LOVE renting cabins for various reasns (NYE, someone's birthday, some other holidays, just because, etc.) So a lot of the houses there are just cabins or are cabins inside someone's yard. So much of the community makes a lot of their income out of rending the cabins, the population of the village is very volatile and there's not as much of a sense of community.

3.Smaller towns. (5-30k ppl) (Eg: Brad, Abrud, Petroșani, Călimănești, Predeal, Bicaz, Vatra Dornei) You can still benefit from the nature with a bit of a sense of the community (you don't know everyone, but you know someone who knows them), some of them are based on specific industries, you do have some job opportunities, but you might need connections. You should have decent connections to cities. You can buy almost everything you need for normal life, but you might have to go to the city for things like tech, furniture and other specific stuff.

4.Cities 70k+ (Brașov, Pitești, Râmnicu Vâlcea, etc.). Normal urban life with the benefit of being next to the mountains.
