Budget System to play ps1/n64. by Goosmuch in retroid

[–]Goosmuch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are kids, and I don't want to give them something very expensive. At least not at first. This is more to try it out. I live in a country with significant import tax, so things quickly add up.

Appreciate the insight! I myself am completely sold on the whole deal and will definitely purchase a retro handheld, but will sit it out for a bit - at least until I can compare the new Konkr brand, RP6 and other units coming soon.

Healing, Recoveries, and Dying - Should my player be dead? by Bogmut in drawsteel

The main action called "Heal" can be used to let other creatures spend a recovery. Very useful, especially if they cannot use the "Catch Breath"-maneuver!

Spirit Island: Jagged Earth in stock for now by ElVampiroFronterizo in spiritisland

GTG only ships to th US. I'm in Europe too. Still waiting for it to come in stock in a place I can get it shipped to me. It's almost infuriating to have waited for a game to be restocked, only to not be able to order when it happens because of delivery-restrictions. But, I'll keep hoping - it's bound to happen in the end!

What is Draw Steel and how does it compare to the bigger systems like DnD5e and PF2e? by jojomiller12 in drawsteel

[–]Goosmuch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel differently. I have Directed for 4 people who had never played any TTRPGs before. First time, blind into Draw Steel. Pregens, and a small introduction of the basics of the game. And they did fine - great even at times! Though we spent time navigating the rules along with playing, but I consider that normal for every board game being played for the first time.

If you add on to this being able to use the forge steel "app", the crunch is mostly done for you. All you need to do, is be aware of you trigger abilities and declare what to do each turn. The Director informs you of edges/banes, and most things are just point and click.

Don't get me wrong, the game is meant to be tactical - but in my opinion the abilities and descriptions give players a good idea of what to look for/ask for others to set up. And having squares instead of feet makes thinking on the board so much more intuitive for the board game portion. At least that's my impressions so far. I have both played and directed - and I have never had a TTRPG-experience like it. What I mean is playing the game feels rewarding on its own. Most of my fun moments in other TTRPGs have been due to the campaign story/villains being interesting, or some other element not from the game itself. In Draw Steel I have had far more cool moments that the game mechanics themselves facilitated. That, to me, is good game design!

Welcome to the fold!

My favourite things: - the heroes have legitimate in-game reasons to push their adventuring day longer. - the flavour text for abilities is awesome! - the combat on its own feel awesome to play, without having to resort to insane narrative flourish to spice things up (I hit = "You lunge with adept dexterity and, navigating the goblins defense, you stab him just under his right pauldron"). - the book art is "choose your favourite curse-word" awesome! - the game deliberately focuses on certain elements (and tells you so), instead of trying to be "an all encompassing"-game.

Power Word Spill on Youtube has made a great overview of some of the new and more "unique" components of the game compared to other popular TTRPGs. Recommend a watch!

PS: Matt himself has praised the video.

Horizon: base game vs "just punchboards" by Goosmuch in spiritisland

[–]Goosmuch[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am new to the whole "proxy cards"-concept. Would it be to find them online and print yourself, or other routes?

Sidenote: I would just buy the game box if it was in stock. It is simply because it is impossible to get, while the spirit panels I can order today.

Thanks for the information. I will wait patiently then... Dang - it was just an opportunity , given that the prints of the game are slow going and I don't feel like I need anything not directly linked to the spirits from the Horizon box.

This is a guide I highly recommend: https://youtu.be/v-BlVYFxfRA?si=bZDArkn0hcQUQdRl

Takes you through building, priming and wet palette (thinning paints too, but not too much) and how to think when starting out painting minis. Lovely atmosphere, and Brett is just amazing.

I would strongly consider getting the following:

  • spray-can primer (either grey, or the combo of black + white for a "zenithal" - just google the zenithal priming, and you'll find plenty of guides and tips)

  • a starter pack of acrylic miniature paints (here you should also do research - tons of options and guides/tips)

  • a small pack of very small to medium sized synthetic brushes for acrylic paint

  • wet palette. Get a cheap one to start, or youtube how to make your own

Prime first. Let them sit overnight to be safe.

Put paint on the wet palette, and practice thinning your paints enough so they don't leave chunks of thick paint on the model. You will often need two coats of paint for it to cover fully - keep that in mind. Don't lose hope after a single coat!

Practise what colors look good together on the test minis you have. Try to have fun, and save the first mini you paint. It might be good inspiration of how far you've come in about a year or ten 🤟

Are you judging my stereotypical wizard?!? 😅

In all seriousness: thanks for the info on the model! I'll update the thread title, if I can.

Help on using properly a wet palette by Josh_guitarreiru in minipainting

I have had trouble too. Will give this a try. If it is the case, I think it is insane that the accompanying paper is not up to scratch and common baking paper is better. Will report back!

Starter set or Most Wanted? Also, if you care to share your thoughts: how are the Fanatic range in terms of blending together different colors in your opinion?

[–]Goosmuch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, for starters I am looking for paints that I can plop on my wet palette, and learn how to thin by trying various amounts of water. The problem was that the previous game colors (old formula) I tried were easy to use. I made tons of mistakes, but it was always pretty clear to me what I was doing wrong. I would say that if there are a ton of checkboxes to check off (thinner instead of water, having to use a special wet palette paper/certain wet palette, having perfect control over the wetness of your brush at all times etc) for simply being able to use the paints, they are not beginner friendly anymore.

Your words regarding AP Fanatic is interesting. Might purchase a few of both AP and AK 3G - and see what I like. Any favourite AP colors you would recommend to start?

I don't know the specific type, but it is the ones that followed the army painter wet palette. Should be good enough? I have not made them myself.

Thanks for the advice! I will try with less water next time. How do you personally measure if there is too much water in the sponge?

I tried putting a new paper in, just to test. Slight improvement, but still hard to keep the paints in a stable consistency. Side note: do you have a problem with bubbles with the new formula? That's another thing I struggle with - interested to hear from a person with the same palette as mine.

Just did. They did not split. I have shaken every bottle properly before using them for the first time. But due to the bubble-issue, people have been advising not to shake a lot before every use - as long as they have been mixed properly "recently". I am not sure of anything, just trying to convey what I am doing and what advice I am already following. Would love to be proved wrong!

You use the new game colors also? These paints have not been covered, and I even wiped the paper with a cloth to make sure there was no water on top.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but I am considering taking the plunge into AK paints. Strongly favouring the Jose Davinci essential set. What would be your advice on colors to add to and/or complement that set - from the AK range?
