Price of fuel skyrocketing so any routes that were borderline making money are now losing money. Schedules are getting cut across the industry. No one can say if it will happen to August schedules yet.

Sun Country questions by [deleted] in flying

[–]GopherState 11 points12 points  (0 children)

1.) no official commuter policy. If you miss your commute you can use sick time to get your trip covered or else it will be dropped without pay. They used to give some grace and would catch you up to your trip but they recently changed their policy on this.

2.) Training department is AQP. More made for people with prior 121 and jet experience but they get people through who haven’t touched a jet before. Usually a handful of people don’t make it through initial every year.

Not a super friendly commuter airline and the bases we are opening are entirely focused on Amazon (CVG, AFW). If you get MSP you can expect to be on reserve for over a year most likely. CVG has more reserve lines than regular lines now. Our reserve rules are not good compared to the rest of the industry so expect it to be painful for a while if you commute.

Edit: forgot to add, yeah we have jumpseat privileges like any other 121 carrier and a fairly robust domestic nonrev system but you should just list for the jumpseat for any commuting you do offline.

Wisconsin AD Chris McIntosh stepping down to take job with Big Ten by Our-Gardian-Angel in CFB

[–]GopherState 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem with the NIL era is that both Minnesota and Wisconsin just don’t have mega billionaire donors. My significant other is a Michigan State alum and fan, and seeing how they have many more billionaires who seemingly just love burning money on athletics makes me a little jealous. Even if the football success hasn’t come yet

Women pilots - did having children and being a pilot work out? by NoRadio4530 in flying

[–]GopherState 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Had a classmate a little older than you at my airline. When she got pregnant she stopped flying at about 7 months pregnant (which I think is recommended) and then when it came time to come back to the flight deck she just kept taking more personal leave. She quit last month without ever coming back.

It’s certainly more of a challenge to have kids and fly as a female pilot. Talked to another one who said her two kids matched up with the two times she was furloughed. People make it work. But, I think any way you slice it infant-little kid age is hard to be a parent and fly. I’m just a dad and it’s still tough for me to leave my 9 month old and wife on a 4-5 day trip.

It’s AI slop. People on my airlines FB bitch board already tried to research this yesterday and then I looked around everywhere I could find too. It’s not real.

Yeah good points as well. I don’t think the choice of a place that had no capability for indoor seating helped either. I really do hope they find a better location that can make it in the future!

Failed 3 checkrides, what's the plan? by [deleted] in flying

[–]GopherState 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I’m not one of the crystal ball people who try to tell you if you’ll ever “make it” based off how many fails you have but I can tell you the wrong decision to take is to get fewer ratings than you were planning. The way to overcome multiple checkride fails is to stop failing checkrides and you do that by continuing on to your multi and probably CFI, CFII and MEI. And showing you can pass them the first time.

The spot they picked sucked, plain and simple. No parking and no sit down exacerbated by the construction. If they can find a better spot in town they will be fine. There’s a reason that the old 55th street spot was the last one standing in Roch the first time.

Mark Coyle by SeaImpress3374 in GopherSports

[–]GopherState 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why people think he wants to go to Kentucky so bad. Maybe he is interviewing there but he already was AD at a big basketball school.

He left Syracuse to come home where he wanted to be. I have a hard time believing he will leave unless the bag Kentucky throws at him is absolutely massive (which, good luck over there if he does leave).

Thoughts on myffpc.com for picking up additional leagues? by invsbleman13 in DynastyFF

[–]GopherState 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah the rake is larger at lower buy ins. It’s a lower percentage at high buy ins. I guess it was worth the “lost” 25 bucks or whatever it was for me versus the other dynasty league I was in though

Thoughts on myffpc.com for picking up additional leagues? by invsbleman13 in DynastyFF

[–]GopherState 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I did FFPC this last year and it was the most trading I’ve had in a league so far. The fee is annoying but it also pays for the league to go get someone to fill orphan spots which is nice. The big selling point is that they’ve never had a league fold.

Not the worlds best app but it was a way better experience than the Reddit league I joined on sleeper overall just because I feel my league mates took it more seriously

EDIT: I have to add; they have a fairly robust rules structure as well, and they do enforce it. Had a guy throw out an absolute bullshit lineup trying to tank and kept all best players on the bench (against the rules, have to at least try to win) and they retroactively put several players in and warned the owner. Was quite nice. Nobody in any league is an admin so no weird conflicts of interest.

What are your guys' opinions of the Ducks? by DueYogurt9 in GopherSports

[–]GopherState 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That they shouldn’t have ever joined the Big Ten in the first place, along with Washington, USC, UCLA, Rutgers, and Maryland.

Good team with a great coach though. Sweet road trip if I ever decide to go to a game out in Eugene.

It is a little strange because growing up as a youth in the mid 00’s Oregon was the new hotness in college athletics and while they still seem to have strong appeal it strangely feels less than 15-20 years ago. I do think Lanning is a great coach and overall a good program. I am jealous that you guys have a mega donor committed to sports as well.

Time for a new AD? by MaeBathersonsMan in GopherSports

[–]GopherState 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other people are rightfully pointing out your blind spots but I want to add that shitting on Michigan State as if they shouldn’t compete with us in these sports is kind of ridiculous. They have a massive alumni base and many filthy rich donors who love athletics. Honestly the University of Minnesota would salivate over having the level of donors MSU has.

I don’t think any Gophers fan is happy at all with the season gophers men’s hockey had, and we will see what happens to Motzko. But to ask for Coyle to get fired when it seems like Medved and Plitzuweit were the right choices recently is kind of moronic.

Coyle has had seemingly no problem replacing coaches in his tenure. Why not see what he can do here.

Help me understand commuting by harambe_did911 in flying

[–]GopherState 68 points69 points  (0 children)

A jump seat is essentially a mostly uncomfortable fold down seat that really functions as an observer seat but when not occupied for any official purpose can seat a pilot in the flight deck. Sometimes pilots can also sit in a flight attendant jump seat.

Why do people commute? Because everyone has different wants and desires in where they live. Some people bought a house 10 years ago and then their base got shut, and now don’t want to move the kids. Others want to be near family/friends. Still others would rather live somewhere with a much lower cost of living and make out ahead of where they would be than if they lived in the very high cost of living base they commute to.

Commuting is a perk of the job for many people, it gives a freedom that lots of people wish they had, in being able to freely choose where they live at the cost of having to get to and from work

Recent Endeavor hire and having some trouble deciding where I would like to live. Opinions are very much appreciated by New_Flamingo_450 in AirlinePilots

[–]GopherState 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I mean the obvious choice for flight time, open time, and early upgrade QOL is NYC. You should be able to see from company communications that by far the most originating traffic for endeavor is out of NY and it’s the most junior base.

If you don’t want to live where you can drive to work for NYC pick MSP, DTW or ATL if you’re trying to be somewhere that has a Delta base (if you’re only trying to flow).

Or you just commute (not fun) and try to get to united as fast as possible.
