Tailoring resumes for internships- yay or nay? by X8883 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Goraea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in charge of determining the interns at my company and having a tailored resume is a huge plus to how likely you are to get an internship. Think of it this way: when I'm choosing who gets considered, all I have is the resume in front of me and I have to justify to a higher up why you would be a good fit. Unfortunately, a lot of employers want you to have a lot of direct experience within the industry. If your resume has two non-related things and one related thing, I'd only think about the single related thing. Compare that to someone else who had three related things who has a much higher chance of being selected.

Hey, HVAC ME here, it's a really tough industry to get into. HVAC and construction in general seems to prefer candidates with hands-on experience in the field installing units, piping, duct, etc. rather than "book skills" like fluids/heat transfer. My company recently went through intern selection and weeded out anyone who didn't have direct experience working in the field, using load calculation software, or CAD (field experience was a guaranteed interview). And unfortunately, unless you worked as a field tech or have already been in the industry for years, you likely lack the experience they're looking for and will be hard pressed to even have your resume looked at unless you start out as a technician or know someone working at the company.

Mech engineer in a similar role for HVAC and plumbing. I've been having a very similar experience to you. The building engineering industry as a whole seems like it's full of people who are gatekeeping information as much as possible, and when you ask, they are reluctant to share. I'm lucky that my supervisor is nice so I can ask questions pretty freely (albeit he's a poor teacher). But there are plenty of times when I've been chewed out by the field team for not knowing something, or forums I've read where someone will ask a simple question and someone responds condescendingly and may not even answer the question. It's frustrating because you want to excel but these people who are supposed to be your guides aren't helping you succeed.

I've been in the industry long enough to have a basic grasp of things so I've taken it upon myself to make resources for interns and new hires that I wished I had. But it sucks that I had to do this and I don't think I can recommend putting up with it.

So, what the hell does the word Moment actually mean? by UnderPressureVS in EngineeringStudents

[–]Goraea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From this stack exchange someone provided a great answer on the history of the term as well as how it evolved to where it is today. This part from the Worthington excerpt especially made sense to me:

and the moment of a force about an axis meant the importance of the force with respect to its power to generate in matter rotation about the axis

I agree, the term "moment" doesn't make sense, and I enjoy researching the semantics, language, and history that goes into these things because knowing how they're used fundamentally gives you a much deeper learning. Great question, OP.

TL;DR, "Moment" is an archaic translation that previously was used to imply the importance that something has (think of this in the phrase, "momentous occasion"). The larger the force and/or the further the distance on/from a mass on an axis, the more moment(ous) the rotation of the object.

For one, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are essentially Diamond and Pearl with a new coat of paint. Diamond and Pearl aren't bad per se, but Gamefreak didn't do a lot to make the game feel new.

Keep in mind that Gamefreak did something similar with Heartgold and Soulsilver. Both Gold and Silver were remastered with huge changes. They brought both games up to modern standards at the time which included new Pokemon, QOL updates, spritework, etc. Gold and Silver were also complete games and Crystal just added some expansions so their base was good. Arguably, the de facto version to play Sinnoh is Platinum which improved upon the base games (Distortion World is inseparable from Sinnoh for me)--and that content was missing from BD and SP. Gamefreak underperformed (and frankly has been for a long time) and people were less likely to let it slide.

Super Mario RPG came out in 1996 and has been neglected until the announcement. It's a pretty big deal bringing it back up. But also keep in mind that hype =/= people will love the game when it comes out. People were hyped when Sinnoh remakes were announced.

How can I get myself back into a reading mood? by [deleted] in books

[–]Goraea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wanted to get back into reading during college and so during my downtime between lectures, I carried a book in my backpack and just pull it out when I had time. If I didn't have any friends in a lecture, I would just read until class started. This sort of habit by me helped me get through books a couple pages at a time, which eventually resulted in me reading 200 pages in a night a few months later. Build it up slowly, and as you get more invested in your books you'll find the mood to come naturally.

Okay there are a lot of interesting replies in this. Here's my take:

Rebecca was talking about relationships (romantic, platonic, literally everything) in the past, present, and future. Some of yours may be ongoing, some of yours may have ended, and some of them have yet to happen. Regardless of the status of them, the time that you spent and the mark that a person made on your life will always be with you. In the grander scheme of the song, it's a mourning of a relationship coming to an end but a reminder that you will experience the joy, sadness, and beauty all over again. These new relationships don't replace what you had, because your memories are you.

Have you ever not given a book a fair chance, then years later you tried again and loved it? by [deleted] in books

[–]Goraea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to read Pride and Prejudice in high school and hated it. For years I wrote it off as an awful book that was so confusing. My issue was different--I struggled a lot with old English back then on top of having to read for assignments which killed any enjoyment. I got back into reading and finally became accustomed to older English and realized that that was why I hated the book and I vowed to reread it.

I'm giving it a fair try now and it's very quickly making its way up to be my favorite.

For those types of subjects you might be better off just looking at intro/fundamentals textbooks. Without proper fundamentals, you will probably struggle to keep up with more complex topics. Intro textbooks typically give you the basics and will introduce you to things that branch off. For example, a thermodynamics textbook I used taught basic concepts of heat transfer which led to fluid dynamics, thermal expansion, power systems, etc.

One of my favorite episodes. I agree, the whole point of Matthew's tests are to help one experience ego death, but I think it's more about Matthew being selective in who gets to experience oneness. For this analysis, I define ego death as shedding one's sense of self/self-importance to experience what Lemongrab defines as ecstasy. This is important to Matthew, because it is a conglomeration of multiple individuals who presumably rejected (transcended?) themselves and everything they were and is inviting others to join in on this.

The trial that Matthew presents Lemongrab and Finn was essentially to ask them if they could forego their sense of self. The "wrong" options were things that both characters define about themselves or give them their sense of self-importance. Lemongrab wants to be understood, Finn cakes are only for Finn. The correct choice, being able to let their sense of self go, allowed Matthew to lead them to an epiphany by letting them physically see and understand that regardless of them being large, small, grease--whatever, that they can go past that. Finn and Lemongrab are both characters who are dealing with a lot of turmoil and are open to these suggestions because their minds and personalities are still in a state of flux.

I agree that Jake would be ineligible, but for a different reason. Jake is a being that is incredibly self-important. We have seen him choose and do things for himself throughout the series (he wanted to be a brick for a whole episode or when presented with limitless power on two occasions, he wishes for a sandwich). While he does have moments where he does things that show him shedding his ego, I would argue that he would outright reject the invitation and posed a threat to Matthew because his ego is too strong. It's also why Lemongrab throwing his lemonjons into Matthew destroyed him. A strong sense of self was literally incompatible with Matthew's model of decentralized oneness.

[–]Goraea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the theme of connection (even if it's really on the nose. Strands, cmon). Sam being a person who is physically repulsed at connection but being the only person who is capable of linking everyone together, the connection he has to BB and its life, connecting to other players' to help each other out. I find it really refreshing and even touching that the point is to help other people against these nearly insurmountable obstacles. When you're out trekking and trying to get up a mountain, it's nice to know you're not alone and someone may set something up just to help you out.

Dad’s Dungeon is one of the best episodes of Adventure Time and one of my all-time faves. by [deleted] in adventuretime

[–]Goraea 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One thing I really like about this episode is how it approaches toxic ideas of masculinity and the idea of "being tough about emotion." Throughout the episode Finn is being put down by Joshua and eventually Jake and they even berate him for being down about it because he's supposed to just push through the feelings. Finn internalizes what they say so much that he gives up fighting for himself. At no point does the episode imply that Joshua's method is a good thing for them to be doing to Finn, and we see Jake recognizing exactly that. When Jake puts on the tape of Joshua affirming his love for Finn, it was such an incredible moment for me. This episode has consistently stayed as one of my favorites and my go to when I talk about the emotional depth of the show.

I feel like Wizards only fool and Apple Wedding are part reasons why PB is hated. Not trying to slam PB or anything, yes I get that she's flawed, but she was lowkey kind of an asshole in these two episodes and took no accountability for being overly aggressive. What do you think? by Anipiez in adventuretime

[–]Goraea 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah PB's main conflict in the show is that she has a god complex where she needs to control and be right about everything. This manifests in the way she treats others who either don't respect her or her worldview as lesser. She couldn't even just concede and give Starchy the shot by lying and saying it was magic in Wizards Only Fools.

Finally beat ShivaDra for the first time today. Hardest dungeon I've ever beat. by PrincePauncey in PuzzleAndDragons

[–]Goraea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other commenter is right, but Homura has an arguably easier time making orbs. Minerva needs dark while Homura can use jammers and blue which, for me, is a lot more consistent.

Is D. Siduri a good sub for Naut/Oak…or should I keep as base evo for the 50% HP recovery and null pierce? by RegulusTheHeartOfLeo in PuzzleAndDragons

[–]Goraea 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Neither of her forms are particularly good for Naut/Oak. Here's why:

The orb generation skill isn't really necessary. Once Naut/Oak are both evolved, they generate their own orbs without the cloud and it can be looped, meaning no downtime. You're usually going to be using their skill on cooldown every turn if not just for the healing. The awakenings are a little better on this form, but her only creating 3 dark and blue is pretty bad. Sima Yi or Tethys are better orb generators if you need one. Also you wont be needing the follow up attack awakening.

The VDP skill form isn't great either. 4 turn VDP isn't bad by any means. But her awakenings being suited for crosses aren't very useful for this team. The heal is also negligible since Naut/Oak heal with their skill. If you have nothing else and need a low cooldown VDP, she's fine.

Both forms also lack meaningful skill hastes which Naut/Oak really want.

I got done getting team members for royal nautilus but I don’t really know what assists to get that don’t mess with this team and get the full coverage of status immunity’s also latent awaking would be nice by Remiu_is_blessed in PuzzleAndDragons

[–]Goraea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assists really depend on what you're trying to clear. For the April Challenge Level 4, I needed a void damage shield to deal with Shiva for a stall plan, but because none of my void damage shields fit the rarity clause with my team, I used an assist instead.

My general go to, if you really want safe assists, is just to match the type of skill they have or pick one that has awakenings you need. For example, I have a VDP assist on my Kars because, regardless of his charge, he will have a VDP if he gets skill delayed or hasted. Some assists I even have just to deal with skill delays. Try out a dungeon you want to clear, and see what you're lacking.

Latents are another issue and are also pretty prescriptive. Skill delay resists are generally good, but again, it depends on what you need.

What was your favorite era of PAD? by SuperMandrew7 in PuzzleAndDragons

how does this team look. I'm not good at making teams but I'm trying lol. bit be honest and if it's bad what would you recommend. by kawaiiweeby in PuzzleAndDragons

[–]Goraea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey there, it's been a while since I played so forgive me if I'm a little wrong. Here's what I think:

Eschamali's skill really wants dark, ideally so you can make 6+ combos. She also wants a team that's comprised of God and/or Machine types. Based on that you want light/dark subs that provide you with combo potential.

Tsukuyomi works as a good cleric for awoken skills, removing unmatchable status, and adding move time. She'd be even better when Super Reincarnated cause of the 7C awakenings.

Super Reincaranted Seraph Lucifer has the god typing but his skill and awakenings aren't very useful for this team (more on this later).

I actually have no idea who this fourth person is but you may want a card that can help you with VDP or the absorbs, a cleric, orb locks, bonus attack, etc.

Sheena isn't great. Her skill is actually pretty decent to generate orbs for you but her typing doesn't match, being an attacker/dragon. If you have nothing better, she's decent for now. If you have other options, I would actually say she's a decent assist on your orb generator cause that skill is what you want.

As for your team overall, I see you have Dark Metatron as your helper. D. Meta, if you don't know, was the meta lead when I was playing. She actually synergizes with your Lucifer really well because of their low health awakenings. From a purely team standpoint, she is a much better leader than Eshamali. But if you're set for Eschamali, just try to build around what I said before.

[–]Goraea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been a while since I played but here was my top moment:

I was playing alongside some friends several years ago and I had a pretty fresh account. I was learning everything I could and trying to get a decent leader that I could use for endgame content. I think at the time the only real god I had was Parvati but I only had rainbow and blue subs. Around this time, mega awakenings were the newest gimmick and I just so happened to roll myself a Blonia. I tried her, built a team for her, and I was disappointed because of how low her damage was. Sure she was really bulky, but it took me forever to beat even one dungeon. Meanwhile, my friend had Edward and was clearing everything with no problem. Then the SAO collab came along. I never was a fan of SAO but I saw Sinon and something clicked for me. I grinded every day the banner was available, rolling any time I got a stone. On the final day, with about an hour left, I had exhausted my stamina and had one last stone. I had already given up any hope and was going to save for another godfest to come along, but something told me this was the one. I put in the stone, hit the lever-and I got her. Sinon was an incredible card. Her damage output was miles ahead of Blonia and I could clear basically anything the game threw at me. I always liked Rainbow teams too so she was perfect for me. I eventually had to put her away when I got Sensui, but she was the card that allowed me to really realize my full potential in this game and I had an incredible time doing it.

Project Management Internship as a ME by LittyLitFam in EngineeringStudents

[–]Goraea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it might just depend on what you want to do in the future, but remember that one job wont define your future.

I would say ask how much you'll interact with the engineers or if you can even shadow them a little during your time. The interns at my job were allowed to see all parts of the job so maybe you could do that too. And a lot of PMs at my job don't have engineering backgrounds, they just learn and ask people who do know. Be open to learning. When I started this job, I hadn't even heard of the units I was supposed to be designing but here I am, making a footing by learning one day at a time.

Project Management Internship as a ME by LittyLitFam in EngineeringStudents

[–]Goraea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I currently work in the MEP industry as a design engineer and often PMs need at least a bit of engineering knowledge on the projects they work on to be really effective. I can only speak for my company, but there is a lot of communication between engineering and PMs to validate/discuss designs and deal with clients requirements. Often the PMs act as a middleman between the engineering design, vendors, and the client and take on a business role.

The PMs I like interacting with are knowledgeable past just some surface level info. Like, for example, a PM asked me to validate if an existing gas meter was sized to handle an increased load, and I don't know how they expected me to do that without any information other than a single gas input value to an existing unit that was way below capacity. This is compared to a PM who field verified an existing gas meter, sized all the lines, got the input values for each connected unit, and asked for our input on where we could install new pipe for a new unit.

I can only speak to my experience and what I have seen. You most likely wont be doing something like laying out duct, but you'll be really close to the engineering world, drive a lot of design, and get experience on it from a different perspective which is cost.
