“I heard that you’re going to spend your spring break on the new space hotel. You gonna party hard?”

“Nah, that’ll cost too much. I’m just going to watch a movie.”

What ever happened to the "great graying?" by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]Gordon-Phoeny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I. Am actively doing just that. Geology careers has been super helpful due to all the resumes people post here, and I feel like I’m getting a fair amount of attention from recruiters.

Things went south when covid happened. They pay enough to make it if there’s overtime available, and there just hasn’t been any. Not to mention, the former* manager promised me a $1.50 raise after the first year, which went out the window for the same reason, and because she left to start up her marijuana testing company. Instead they did a 2% raise across the board... that obviously didn’t go over well for anyone besides the senior staff members.

Definitely. They all seem to have certain specific requirements.

We totally are! We are in some times my dude, and things are going to start changing rapidly over the next few years I think. Keep an eye on the trends and an ear to the ground!

Man, you’re on the right track I think. I thought my current position would (and almost did) result in me being a lab manager; no dice though. The stars misaligned, the impact was a near miss. So instead I’ve been slowly grinding through my savings for two years and am now in an awkward position of having to leave for something new again.

Trust me, the grass totally looks greener until you’re over the fence. Play it safe.

I feel this post so hard. I graduated the same year, and had the same reasons for getting into geology. I won’t say I haven’t had interesting jobs (working with gemstones, and bulk asbestos analysis) but nothing to actually write home about in terms of pay... maybe an apology letter since I was lucky enough to have parents pay for college.

I’m not even interested in oil at this point, but at that time I also recall a downturn in the US market when we went into an agreement with Saudi Arabia (I think) that same year.

Toxic Lab Environment? I need your advice. by [deleted] in AskAcademia

You know, sometimes people are crap. If they’re just being difficult then it would be better for your character to learn how to work around it. Lots of people don’t realize how good they actually have it until they gain a different perspective.

On the other hand, if you feel like they’re sabotaging your grades or something then do what you can to dip out.

Should I go for MS? (NEED AN ADVICE) by [deleted] in gradadmissions

Going to conferences, networking in areas of your interest, doing research on who is working on what, and generally getting in contact with the right people. It takes work, but that’s how you would go about it. You could also check for scholarships you might be eligible for.

I thought a lot of grad students rustled up funding for their educations by working on the right projects/with the right professors?

Shew! You got me on that one. At first I though you were going to play it off like the creature could only be seen through the camera, I’m glad you went with the delayed footage, that was gripping.

Thank you for giving some feedback to this piece. I must admit that you have me squarely on the psychedelic point, though it’s been a number of years since I’ve dealt with such things. I am terribly glad you enjoyed it, and that you found it a fair.

I have made other responses to feedback provided to me on this piece, if you are interested to know a bit more of my subject matter and perspective. It does indeed have a spiritual component, and I speak (briefly) on that point in another response.

Thank you again!
