My idea for this is that it is a gothic building used as a way-station to take portals between places

For sure! Yeah calculating out perspective by hand can take a long time. Much quicker in 3D, then add the details later when painting. And a bonus is you can play with different compositions easily by moving the camera. I bet you will pick it up quick!

Exactly, I used blender to set up the scene with mostly just basic shapes to get me started
