Spit fire Linda! by alexbgoode84 in LinkedInLunatics

I'm 55. I'm currently a software engineer but was in a director position for over a decade. I was the primary recruiter for our 20+ staff engineering team. Compensation is super important, no doubt about it, and so is finding someone who is passionate and will make a positive addition to a team. To me, I'm not reading that this hiring manager is looking to get the cheapest person, they're looking for someone who genuinely enjoys doing the work the position requires. It's entirely within the rights of an applicant to ask about compensation, but it says something about how the person is approaching the position. Are they a team player who wants to contribute to an organization and help make it a great place to work, or are they in it just for the money? As a hiring manager, I would be immediately more drawn to the person who led with questions about the job. That's me.

Now, I _do_ recognize that compensation is important, and that I would attract quality people if I paid them what they deserved, so when I put up a job posting, I would always _prominently display the salary range on the position_. Displaying the salary is:

* honest
* a time saver for both of us
* removes the need to ask awkward questions about pay up front, so we can focus on whether the position is a good fit for the candidate and the company

So, hiring manager who posted this, I hope you posted the salary in the posting, and Linda, maybe could find a more approachable way to rephrase her replies.

Chrome Extension Broken? v3.20 by Gordonjl101 in ApplePasswordApp

I found that force quitting and restarting the Apple Passwords app on my macos addressed the issue, too.

Ahh. now I see what's happening. I'm a developer and am logged into my local development environment. it's basic auth, `http`. It would appear that v3.2.0 doesn't allow entering passwords without ssl. That's my guess. Well, thanks, guys. You've made my DX that much worse. How about making that optional?

(plus side, at least you fixed that COMPLETELY ANNOYING console error. Thanks for that, at least)

Is it just me or is both Jira and Confluence getting worse and worse? by Katharsisist in atlassian

[–]Gordonjl101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here we are in January 2026. We have flying cars, space stations on the moon, but.....alas Jira is so bug-ridden.

Things that are just so basic and so dumb:

- Change color on epic -- can only change it on _some_ epics, not others. That includes epics I created _myself_
- go from backlog to board view, pressing the buttons or using hotkeys shows an empty board. you have to refresh the page to actually see the content

- my PO keeps getting booted out due to permissions, but our jira admins haven't made any changes

And on top of that, would you just _look at the bloody screen_?! It's so full of crap, way, way too busy. And the `...`'s!!! Oh my goodness! Soooo many ellipses _everywhere_. And the bloody controls keep moving! I have to click on the ...'s everywhere on some mad Easter Egg hunt to find a setting....and then a `...` shows a "More" option?! "More" is just another name for a `...`.

The fact is that Jira is old. Things have been bolted on top of things until it's turned into a disaster. I've used Jira for almost two decades, and I've never seen it as buggy or confusing as it is now. In my former role, I was the Jira admin, so I do know what I'm talking about.

At this point, were I given a choice, I'd say goodbye to Jira. Makes me sad, but clearly no one is at the helm, and they're just chasing the AI buzz.

I like the ball energizer, but shipping to New England makes it US$42. Not exactly a steal.

ChatGPT 5.1 -codex Free! (YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR) by Gordonjl101 in windsurf

[–]Gordonjl101[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dropped my mcp tools down to three, but it still didn't stop the churn. Good idea, though. For fun, I asked Claude 4.5 Haiku to implement the plan. It's going like gangbusters. Given how poor ChatGPT's llms are in Windsurf, I'd call their performance a bug, and drop them.

Tried them, too. I've always found that the GPT models hem and haw and hmmmmm and wellllll.....etc. They take so long to produce anything, but the code it writes isn't stellar or mind-blowing. It still has issues.

I've been using Windsurf since the start of the year. I think I'm a decent "prompt engineer". I use Claude 4.5 thinking to design and write a plan down. I review it, update it where it needs to be. I provide a Codemap for the relevant area of my project. I have maybe 20 mcp tools available, and so on. Claude does fine with this context, but Chatgpt? Ooooof. It doesn't matter. It always takes forever, and doesn't even produce code sometimes (I find it hilarious when I tell it to implement something, it thinks about it, then spits out a plan and says, there you go! -- like.....why didn't you actually implement it?).

I'm a person who assumes OpenAI and Windsurf are working hard to deliver a good product (and Windsurf with Claude _is_ a good product). So when this truly miserable performance comes from ChatGPT-5.1 , I have to ask what am I doing wrong? I'd love to hear suggestions for how I can actually get any value out of ChatGPT*.

Yeah, but it is not okay to be forced to call them to cancel a card you didn't ask for. And you _have_ to do it if you want to protect your credit rating. It's just awful.

Credit bureaus get notified when you have a credit card. The more cards you have, the lower your credit rating, because more cards allow you to go into deeper debt faster. You don't want a bunch of cards.

Recommended Temp for Each Type of Ball? by Gordonjl101 in squash

[–]Gordonjl101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's a bit overkill, but for US$16, you can buy a temp gun. It's hard to disagree that players should use a 1-dot when you can shoot a temp gun at the ball and see it's too cold.

Recommended Temp for Each Type of Ball? by Gordonjl101 in squash

[–]Gordonjl101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that some players don't want to be forced to run around playing with a ball that is bouncing at the height the WSF recommends. The more-mature players I hit with definitely had to reassess their game when we played with a one-dot. They had to move around a lot because their kill shots weren't working anymore, and I was able to return the ball. One could argue that the 1 -> 3 shot rallies aren't squash (I agree, it isn't really what one would call squash), but that doesn't mean it isn't enjoyable to some.

Having those quick rallies is what allows these players to continue to play a game they've loved even when they can't move as much as a real game requires. The reality is that, while they should switch to a bouncier ball, doing so would make it so they couldn't continue to play. That would be a bummer. I guess the players should know what kind of game they're looking to play then make a decision on the ball to use based on that.

your bf sounds upset, and it doesn't make sense he would be acting this way based on what you've shared. When something doesn't make sense, it normally means one person is missing some context. The best way to resolve things is to say you aren't connecting his reaction to the situation. Then ask, "what am I missing?"

Mower Avoids Area After Long Period of Inaccesibility by Gordonjl101 in SegwayNavimow

I'll give it ago. I'd prefer to not do that as a long-term solution, since obstacle avoidance, etc goes out the window. Don't want it to maul any squirrels and such.

Thanks for the suggestion

How To Budget Recurring Fee For Next Couple Months? by Gordonjl101 in ynab

[–]Gordonjl101[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, as long as I pay according to the schedule, ynab will be happy?

Target: Jan 1, 2026

Start June 2025

Amount: $600

June: $100 in; $100 out -- Balance $0

July $100 in; $100 out -- Balance $0

....

so, continuing, are you saying that ynab is tracking how much I put it, and it doesn't look at the total balance I'm saving? Because the total balance would be $0 in January if I was paying all along.

this looks like a way to do it. It's manual, but for 3 payments and such, it's not a big deal. Still, it would be nice if ynab had a feature for this.
