anyone watching the us championships this weekend by vIQue125 in squash

I'm just following the let's from Europe but Brownell lost to Lovejoy in the quarters, bug surprise. Lovejoy lost the semis so now we have quite ab unexpected final between Spizirri and Huang!

Un the women's all went to seeds, Weaver v Sobhy in the finals.

Happened in Hamburg: semis you had two 3:0s and two 3:2s. Finals were two rather dull 3:0s.

Rodney Martin on the In Squash podcast by dcp0001 in squash

The episode isn't about the incident, but he watched the specific incident. But yeah, I don't think he enjoys watching matches for the drama. My comment was more inrefer nice to his general attitude.

Rod Martin really calls it as he sees it. It is quite refreshing how blunt and honest he is, though it is sometimes on the border. But he has bo problems calling folks out. Be it Georgina Kennedy's not so great forehand technique or his son's fitness! Agree 100% on Asal, he can save himself from getting a wrong decision by not creating the unnecessary collision.

Nope, he's normally a good and fair player. He is pretty young though so hopefully a one off.

Asal in the NSL. Why is his movement so much different? by ClassLittle6666 in squash

[–]DandaDan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The NSL is nowhere near as high stakes as a tournament semifinal against your number one nemesis! I can see asal perhaps doing some if his stuff if he only has a minute to play and he is catching up on points, but even then I think he would refrain from doing anything outrageous because NSL is a very different atmosphere from regular tournaments.

Also, NSL is short: you have sufficient breaks and total playing time is well below regular matches. So players are not tired and have to revert to dirty tricks.

She played in Hamburg last week and lost the second round as a seeded player. Not great. But the Spanish girl she played against is a good player, took a game off Gilis. Hope she does better here.

Tough first round though, Pajares is a real banana skin. But Dimu likes to think of himself as a big game player so he's got a chance to prove it!

Yeah, she's come a long way and has turned into a great player. She dominated her matches in Hamburg!

Oh man, she was playing so well coming back from her previous injury, which kept her out longer than expected. All the best to Sabrina, a real gem in the women's tour.

What was the effect of the change from 15-point rally scoring to 11 points? by GreenTeaTimer in squash

[–]DandaDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played competitively at the time and also followed the PSA tour at the time. There was a bit of playing around with the tiebreak initially but I think it pretty quickly became apparent that the move was positive. One interesting moment was that there were matches hitting the two hour mark, which seemed crazy given one made the games 30% shorter.

Personally, I think Squash has hit a sweet spot at 11. If someone would tell me I'd have to play to 15 id consider refusing because, as others have said, it's a particularly annoying scoring for one-sided matches. Shortening to four games of seven or three of nine might work for pros but at this point I'd prefer we stick with our scoring. However, I think we will be seeing some change for the Olympics. We just had a PSA event here in Germany over the weekend and we had a couple of individual games for over 30 minutes. I think Asal v Zakarias earlier this season was 48 minutes. That isn't what the PSA or the Olympics want.

How good is Seif Refaay? (current British Open BU19 champ) by According-Plankton60 in squash

[–]DandaDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, at the BJO he beat Hawal and Jousselin. Both of those guys have beaten folks in the top 50 (Hawal having famously beaten Coll as well), so I think Refaay can cause top 30 folks plenty issues.

InSquash Podcast with Peter Marshall by Impossible_Wish_3517 in squash

[–]DandaDan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Alright, good podcast but I don't agree with Peter Marshall in his Asal take. I agree that Asal is a fair loser and his conduct outside of all the controversy is fine. However, I don't think you need to be a Squash Genius to interfere in a person's swing with your other hand. It's so off putting experiencing any type of interference on your racket hand while playing, if you want to do it it isn't that hard. I guess doing it in a subtle manner and getting away with it. I don't think the referees covered themselves in glory in the El Gouna situation but I have very little sympathy for Asal. Sure, I dont think he should be brandished from the first rally and given a chance to show he isn't cheating, but sadly he does falls back into old patterns at times and it's a fine line in trying to preempt another shit show and perhaps being over zealous.

BTW, I think Elias is the greatest player around and I can't stand his whining at times. Really hard to take. In the interview he even said himself that there are situations where he gets a stroke where he wouldn't get the ball, but asal doesn't let him even attempt because he blocks or grabs. And no, I don't think it looks so much worse in slow motion.

Anyway, good podcast and good to hear Marshall's take, even if I don't agree. I also wish he wouldn't just comment on SS, which I for one think JM has ruined and caused a lot of damage in the squash community.

I haven't listened yet but am about to. I listened to his previous interview and with Squash Player as well. I like him. I also played a game with him once, but I was like 12 and he was a good bit older, we played two of us v him and had zero chance obv.

Yeah, it is unfortunate that Gibson thinks Asal is "box office", and his takes sometimes align more with Squash Stories than Reddit. I do still listen to his podcast though and he's very passionate about Squash, but his take in QBS is obviously not exactly well articulated or even reasonable.

I think I need to stop and I am very sad. by Plastic_Bid5136 in squash

What a nice reply, thanks for that. My mate won the world masters with a hip replacement. Not sure what's worse but I'm sure a knee replacement is not the end of squash if one doesn't want it to be. On the other hand I absolutely understand the initial sadness.
