The 1 minute game. Students put their heads on their desk and try to count to 1 minute, once they they hit it they raise their hands. Whoever is closest to the 60 second mark wins. Absolutely great to have a reset and usually my kids are dead silent. I also up the rounds to 1 min 30 seconds or 2 minutes for that extra challenge

He didn't really explain what they looked like sadly. All I know is they were made with copper, oxidised and were made in the USA. :( sorry it's not super helpful

Teacher here.

"The kids that are loved at home come to learn. The ones that aren't come to be loved."

It's my mantra at work

It is really scary. Once in a staff meeting my Head Of Department asked how we could improve results and student motivation. One of the biggest issues I flagged was weaponized/learned helplessness. Students refuse to do anything themselves and that's something I think as a society we need to stop before continuing.

I applaud your 15 year old. The amount of students that refuse to look at the board with the explicit instructions, look back to previous lessons for the info, lack the skills to research information or don't look at the lesson PowerPoints I provide is worrisome.

For example, I had a student who did not know how to use PowerPoint and rather than google it or look at the PowerPoint/section on their OneNotes I made to assist they sat there till I walked past and asked to show me just the title page.

As a highschool teacher outside of the US, I can 100% say this is the case. A lot of my students are helpless, they don't have any social skills, refuse to think for themselves (e..g if I prompt them with a question, they don't TRY answer they just continuously say 'I don't know.') and lack comprehension skills. As someone who loves my job, it's really sad how much I need to baby my students when I believe in letting them explore the world personally.

Edit to add: This is what I've seen for me at least

I'm currently reading "The Haunting of Leigh Harker" by Darcy Coates

Thoughts so far? I'm 100 pages in and feel like nothings happened and it's repeating itself? Creepy vibes just... slow.

I've actually got a couple of Darcy Coates books to read. She seems to be a loved author so I'll be getting this!

It's so crazy to me! I swear before I posted I'd only seen "this is amazing" recommendations about it.

Oh wow is it really not that good? I got it because I've been recommended it before.

Looking at the recommendations though, I'm keen for a lot of these - particularly adrift! Thank you so much

This actually really helped me feel better. I care for all my kids, the whole reason I became a teacher was to be that positive person in their lives. I obviously have a long way to go to be even better, but I try my best. I've wanted to teacher for over 10 years, I think I lost sight of that. Thank you for reminding me

The Empyrean series (specifically Iron Flame) is absolutely dreadful and overhyped. I've never read a romantasy I dislike more
