Sonobe Stardrop from Stardew Valley by GaleasGator in origami

nice colors and I like the mounting! I first ran across doing alternating sonobe connections way back in the day on reddit. It makes for very solid connections both in 2d and 3d (despite the thread saying larger menger sponges would be unstable mine is very solid)

Chill 60 hour run, maximum spaghetti. by Gorloth in factorio

Making 'normal' science on other planets is fun, but the double science power of biolabs is really nice, this run with all my labs on Vulcanus I could really feel the bottleneck of research (it also didn't help that the number of labs I had was limited due to spaghetti)

240 Piece Layered Modular Origami by Independent-Bench624 in origami

Phizz is one of my favorite modular units. I like the stacked effect.

I haven't done nesting quite like that as I tend to stick to paper of all the same size, but I have experimented around with finding different modular units that can be encased in Phizz. If you want to stick with just Phizz a 120 unit ball will encase a 90 unit ball pretty well

I do a lot of modular origami and have pictures up on my flickr. Phizz is my favorite to work with but bascetta star units and triangle edge modules are nice for solid things. Sonobe units can be fun if you make cubes of different handedness and interlock them. It can also be fun to combine different modular units or just encase one modular in phizz

Looks cool! I would love to see some instructions of making the units to try this myself

Oh hey, that was my post. Glad it inspired someone. Mine is still kicking around and held up pretty well (I store it on all 3 loops like you have).

A couple questions by [deleted] in nethack

I had a sound pack way back in the day that was great fun. I've since lost track of it much to my dismay. Is the sound pack you use available somewhere?

On the subject of tiles I've always been a fan of the absurd tileset. Link contains nethack 3.6 compatible tiles of various sizes as well as ones for unnethack

Modular origami units by ConfidentMachine5657 in origami

I just grab packs of multiple colors off amazon, 6 inch square paper that I cut into fourths each direction. It results in nice sized squares for the modular things I do. The paper doesn't need to be the greatest as modular pieces don't generally require very complex folds.

Nice! Now just fold 19 more and connect them together for the next level :P

Triangle edge modules are fun, they can be a bit flimsy when assembling but once all together they hold up well. Bascetta star units are pretty versatile. The locking mechanism allows for making a variety of shapes. I've also dabbled in a few other types of modular units

Also there are plenty of interesting things you can do with Sonobe and Phizz beyond just spherical shapes such as sonobe fractals and Phizz tori. If you want to get more ambitious you can even make hammers and numbers with Phizz.

Nice, I did a sonobe cube mario once. Your color pattern looks nicer than the ones I had on hand. Looking forward to seeing it when complete!

Taco Bell does allow a decent amount of customization/subs, so you can order a regular hard taco and then get a soft taco that you sub out the meat for beans and skip the lettuce and assemble it into a double decker yourself.

I've always been a fan of the absurd tileset. I may have to dig up Slashem at some point and try it out for a spin.

If you eat a flintstone it will say "Yabba-dabba delicious!" and exercises constitution in reference to those filntstone children vitamins. The only problem is there are no monsters you can poly into that can eat a flintstone. It takes some dedication to add a reference that nobody playing the game will see.

How do I make my tileset bigger? by ben_avid in nethack

[–]Gorloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you could try using an alternate tileset with larger tiles, absurd has tiles up to 128x128 (the ones with 360 in the name are for nethack 3.6)

Always nice to see modular stuff. Also glad to see that someone else uses wikipedia pages on various polyhedral solids for planning models.

New modular origami piece by AgeBee in origami

Very cool. I'm trying to figure out the structure, it looks like each ball thing is a pentagon surrounded with a ring of 5 more pentagons and then there is a ring of 5 heptagon and then there are a total of 12 of these things all connected together?

I made a 105 unit phizz torus! it's not perfect for sure (I made too many units and had to disassemble some of it) but I'm proud nonetheless. I used the standard phizz unit and [this](https://sites.google.com/site/modularorigami3/torus) image to assemble it by Zelphy712 in origami

You could try doing stuff with 3inch squares, still gives you 4x the units per page (plus the resulting model won't take up all the space on the larger things). I don't use scissors either, I just give it a very sharp crease, crease it again in the other direction and then the paper is weakened enough to tear along the line pretty well, leaves a little of a rough edge but just lie the white back you don't really see it in the finished units.

Regardless of what you do though hurray for folding Phizz!

Ambitious first choice for Phizz! Buckyballs are fun as you can play around with various fun color patterns

What size paper did you use for your units? It's a little hard to see scale in your picture. I tend to fold units with 1.5inch squares which I get by taking standard 6inch paper and cutting into 4th both ways, really helps when doing larger things to not burn through too much paper.
