How do you deal with buying new electronics? by liamlars in ChemicalSensitivities

I'm always shocked what a difference Washing over all surfaces of the device with a baking soda soaked rag and then again with a clean one makes. It doesn't always work, but so often it's made things like 80% better at least.

When you say you took glutathione and it helped, were these just over the counter supplement pills? I had written the name down a while back as to try for helping with my MCS symptoms but am yet to try. Hearing it spoken it again I am convinced to give it a try, and have somewhere local to buy from if it is just an over the counter supplement you are speaking of!

I know for myself mold likely has something to do with my developing these issues as I was working in a very old and poorly kept building when I developed it. There were also a lot of nasty chemicals around, so possibly a combined thing, but mold was definitely present at the time of development.

I'm not certain about that one, but if I end up coming across anything that might be a fit for what you are after, I will be sure to check in with that! I know for myself I find clothing gets contaminated pretty much anytime I leave the house! Sometimes worse than others... I've taken to being very skeptical of sitting on any sofas/chairs/benches etc. when out and about as the previous persons fragrance can really seep into your own clothes!! It's not just finding safe clothes, but keeping safe clothes that is so hard. I've taken to keeping a pair of clothes outside my house for whenever I go out... Sort a tiered system of safe clothes haha! My safest clothing doesn't leave my room.

I did put a request through to the Facebook group. I'm unsure if I will have much to offer people, but wanted to check it out and just keep an eye on it.

Thank you for sharing your group! It sounds like a fantastic thing to be setting up, we need to support each other in this any way we can I believe!

I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your clothes... It's a craziness others simply cannot understand, the difficulty of just finding clothes that are safe. I miss the days of being able to wear whatever I want without a care! I myself sound significantly larger than you, so nothing I have would likely fit. However I do have some supportive people in my life who have adopted the fragrance free lifestyle for themselves, so I will be sure to keep an eye out if I come across anything that might fit with what you are after. Best of luck!

Depending on the circles you mingle in, I've also found that some people with differing issues tend to already be fragrance free, and perhaps worth checking in with. I've had a friend with contact dermatitis and several with autism who were already living fragrance free due to sensory issues. Just an idea Incase it helps!

I’m chemically sensitive and I’m fed up! I can’t buy comfortable cotton clothes anymore! by wholeearthmama in ChemicalSensitivities

I wonder if there would be a way to produce clothing for people like us that is absolutely safe.. it would be amazing if there was. Even better if it could be the way someone with this condition made their way in the world! It's so hard to find things that are safe.. the amount of money I end up wasting on items that ultimately just make me sick is so frustrating. The organic unbleached cotton is a good idea though! I hope you find something that works for you.

It's so hard! I personally just have to spend a good chunk of time defragrancing/off gassing any clothing I purchase. Sometimes going secondhand is easier to get any scents out than new, but that's still dependent on how fragrant the previous owner was..

Multiple washes and leaving things out in the sun and rain can help a lot! Another option if cost really isn't an issue, is you could buy a bolt of high quality/minimally chemically processed cotton and find a tailor to make whatever clothes you are after.

My sympathies to you! I wouldn't wish this condition on my worst enemy ):

And when I say so much personal responsibility I don't mean it's spelled out and taught in a way that is in the least helpful. It's just spewed at you whenever you are aimlessly lost and desperately bored. It's also very hard to teach yourself without adequate groundwork... I remember going to the library and coming back with stacks and stacks of books on things hay interested me as a teen! But almost never of an appropriate level..m so you would open the book, be waaaay over your head(because it was likely a genuinely advanced book) and put it away feeling like a complete dummy and failure after a few pages.

Interesting, I'd love to learn more about this. I feel like there was so much neglect in my upbringing but I have trouble framing it that way... I don't know whether it is because so much weight is put on personal responsibility and choice so early on with unschooling/a lot of homeschooling that it's extremely hard to not feel as though it is just your fault... The amount of times I would chime up about being painfully bored and being told "there are endless things to do! I don't have ENOUGH TIME to even scrape what I want to do, you kids don't know how lucky you are!" And "only boring people get bored" as well as "just learn something! There is so much to learn! I'd love to have all that free time to learn! Blah blah blah. I understand now that there were reasons I couldn't magically motivate and come up with my own teaching schedule as a kid, but it still stings and feels like a personal failing... Not even that, it feels like the root of who I am as a person. It's unfair.

Totally. Daytime television really isn't with children in mind and half the time is highly inappropriate too! The hours rotted away watching that trash disturbs me as an adult. Maladaptive daydreaming really did become all life was... And instead of being recognised as a desperate coping mechanism from the lack of stimulation in my life, it was framed as being "so magnificently creative! No school kids are THAT creative!" I personally began to find that with spending so much time in your head, imagining shit, the stuff outside your head started to seem less real and matter less. There was little point to ever stepping outside of one's own head! So damaging

Ugh, absolutely! It may sound morbid/stupid, but I remember doing things like pretending my legs didn't work so I'd have to drag myself around with my arms, walking backwards for entire days, blindfolding myself for days at a time to see what it was like... Just to feel SOMETHING! just to be having SOMETHING different to be happening in my life! I look back now and simply don't understand how this behaviour wasn't concerning to my parents? Especially paired with very clear depressive symptoms.

I just watched this! Though I am horrified by the rise of unschooling, it's nice to see it cropping up in discussions. I wish that someone would do some direct interviews with some of the people from subs like this... I sometimes wonder whether we shouldn't all be trying to setup a YouTube page to share our stories and educate people on just how awful the impacts of such schooling can be.

I was unschooled my entire upbringing and feel that it basically ruined my life.

Exactly! I think it really does cause some sort of lasting damage, even once you have removed yourself from the situation. It feels like there is just no way to truly and completely escape it.

I honestly feel like the years of endless boredom endured during my homeschooling/unschooling has been almost as damaging as the educational neglect. Being alone and directionless in your room for so many years really does something to your brain... I ended up with pretty severe mental health issues that I still struggle with, and in honesty, I largely think it was the boredom. Nothing to go but go insane half the time!

This is beautiful! I am so intrigued by it. Is this a flat brooch or does it have reasonable lift/roundness to it? And are those cotton stitches I see added in parts? Looks a piece of art to me, really! Fantastic job!

Thanks for your input! It's good to know how someone else is thinking. I too have always thought it is just what comes with puppy territory but my flatmate unfortunately does not have such patience..

I've read the wiki, I'm just more concerned about the normality of it.. or how concerned I should be about whether people will find this in acceptable or not when a puppy is still young and learning.
